  • This study was primarily focused on the experimental comparison of the particle emission characteristics for heavy duty engine. PM and particle number from various heavy duty engines and DPF type were analyzed with a golden particle measurement system recommended by the Particle Measurement Program. And the repeatability and reproducibility between test mode was analyzed. This study was conducted for the experimental comparison on particulate emission characteristics between the European and World-Harmonized test cycles for a heavy-duty diesel engine. To verify the particulate mass and particle number concentrations from various operating modes, ETC/ESC and WHTC/WHSC, both of which will be enacted in Euro VI emission legislation, were evaluated. Real-time particle formation of the transient cycles ETC and WHTC were strongly correlated with engine operating conditions and after-treatment device temperature. A higher particle number concentration during the ESC mode was ascribed to passive DPF regeneration and the thermal release of low volatile particles at high exhaust temperature conditions.

  • The contribution levels of emissions from the heavy-duty vehicles have been continuously increased. Among the exhaust emissions, NOx (nitric oxides) have a ratio of 73.2% and particle matters have a proportion of 61.8% in the heavy-duty vehicles. Also, natural gas vehicles have the 78.9% of total registered local buses in Korea. Therefore, the investigation on emission characteristics of heavy-duty vehicles using CNG and diesel fuel according to the various driving cycles was carried out in this study. In order to analyze the emission characteristics, the five kinds of buses by using CNG and diesel fuels with a after-treatment devices (DPF, p-DPF) was used and five test driving schedules were applied for analysis of emission characteristics in a chassis dynamometer. To analyze the exhaust emission, the exhaust emission and PM analyzers were used. From this study, it is revealed that diesel buses with after-treatment had reduced emission of CO, HC, PM but NOx. Also, NMHC emission of CNG bus have a higher level and NOx level was similar with diesel buses. In addition, emissions in NIER06 with slow average speed shows lowest levels compared to other test modes.

  • In this study, we mainly focused on the PM (Particulate Matter) emission characteristics of a diesel engine. To analyze particle behavior in the tail-pipe, particle emission was measured on the engine-out (downstream of turbocharger), each upstream and downstream both of DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Moreover, particle emission contours on each sampling point were constructed. The reduction efficiency of particle number concentration and mass through the DOC and DPF was studied. Parameters such as EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and the main injection timing were varied in part load conditions and evaluated using the engine-out emissions. The DMS500 (Differential Mobility Spectrometer) was used as a particle measurement instrument that can measure particle concentrations from 5 nm to 1000 nm. Nano-particles of sizes less than 30 nm were reduced by oxidation or coagulated with solid particles in the tail-pipe and DOC. The DPF has a very high filtration efficiency over all operating conditions except during natural regeneration of DPF.

  • DEPs (diesel exhaust particles) like any other particles can be also inhaled into lung to participate in a damaging reaction to the organ. Possible damages might be apoptosis and inflammatory responses to the cells in respiratory track. The aim of this study was cytotoxicity evaluation of DEPs from five in-use diesel vehicles using a murine macrophage cell (RAW 254.7). We found that most DEPs have a considerable cytotoxicity compared to the control and SRM 2975. When measured by MTT assay and extents of apoptosis, DEPs of two highmileage vehicles had higher toxicity than those of the other three low-mileage vehicles tested. Although mRNA expression level of TNF-${\alpha$ somewhat explains the trend of cytotoxicity and apoptosis, that of IL-1$\beta$ did not. Correlation studies among the extents of MTT assay, apoptosis, and TNF-$\alpha$ expression showed that the extents between apoptosis and TNF-$\alpha$ expression was most highly correlated (r=0.96). These results suggest that cytotoxicity of various DEPs could be compared easily by measuring the extent of apoptosis or TNF-$\alpha$ expression by DEPs.

  • There is Increasing world-wide interest in diesel particulate filters (DPF) because of their proven effectiveness in reducing exhaust smoke and particulate emissions. Fine particulates have been linked to human health . DPF use requires a means to secure the bum-out of the accumulated soot, a process called regeneration. If this is not achieved, the engine cannot continue to operate. A number of techniques are available, but most are complex, expensive or have a high electrical demand. The use of fuel additives to catalyse soot bum-out potentially solves the problem of securing regeneration reliably and at low cost. Work on organo-metallic fuel additives has shown that certain metals combine to glove exceptional regeneration performance. Best performance was achieved with a combination of iron and strontium based compounds. Tests were carried out un a bed engine and on road vehicles, which demonstrated effective and reliable regeneration from a tow dose fuel additive, using a single passive DPF. No control valves, flow diverters. heaters or other devices were employed to assist regeneration. Independent particle size measurements showed that there were no harmful side effects from the use of the iron-strontium fuel additive.

  • This study describes effects of DME additives on combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics including nano-particle in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Considered additives include bio-diesel, n-butanol, and MTBE for increasing kinematic viscosity. Among three additives, n-butanol showed the greatest kinematic viscosity. In addition MTBE showed the highest vapor pressure. In the present study mixing ratios of additives were kept constant at 1 and 10% by volume. Experiments were performed at 1200rpm engine speed and nano-particles were measured by SMPS (Scanning mobility particle sizer) devices. Results of combustion characteristics showed that considered additives had little effects on combustion pressure. However, patterns of heat release rate were dependent on properties of additives. Nano-particles of MTBE were the lowest among considered additives.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of ethanol content on the emission of nanosized particles from a diesel-ethanol blended fuel engine. The engine combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of a singlecylinder diesel engine were analyzed using an emission analyzer and an SMPS(scanning mobility particle sizer). The analysis revealed that soot emission increased with the ignition delay. When the ignition delay was fixed, an increase in the ethanol content caused a decrease in the soot emission. With an increase in the ethanol blending ratio, the number concentration and mass distribution of nanosized particles generally decreased. However, for 30% ethanol blending, large particles were observed because of the agglomeration of soot particles, and consequently, the particle mass increased.

  • Numerical analysis has been conducted for improving air flow characteristics in the exhaust aftertreatment system of diesel-fueled passenger cars by changing axial length and cone shape of a DPF diffuser. The results of air velocity and static pressure distributions along with air flow uniformity results suggest that a diffuser shape with 2D or 3D function type is better for air flow patterns in front of a DPF.

  • The regulation of the $CO_2$ emit from vehicles have become much more stringent in recent years. This stringent regulation is more request vehicle manufacturers to develop the alternative fuel vehicles for reducing exhaust emissions. LPG fuel is more clean energy compares with gasoline and diesel fuel. Especially, $CO_2$ emission of LPG Vehicle is less than gasoline vehicle and almost equal to diesel vehicle. For this reason, recently korean government is extending LPG fuel for hybrid car and light duty vehicle. In domestic, Propane is mixing $15{\sim}30%$ to butane for improvement of cold start at winter season. Therefore, In this paper was investigated that the characteristics of emissions according to propane mixing rate with 0, 10, 20, 30% were compared and analyzed by the vehicle test using LPG vehicle according to the FTP75 mode. It was also investigated the characteristics of nano-particle emit with propane mixing rate.
