Micro-machine tool is essential in the micro/meso cutting for the sake of saving of space, resources, and energy. In this research, a micro-turning lathe was fabricated with piezoelectric feed drive mechanism, and motion of each axis was generated by stepwise mechanism with two piezo actuators. The resolution to drive the axis was $0.05{\mu}m$ and position accuracy less than $2{\mu}m$ was assured. From the positioning experiment, piezo feed mechanism is good enough for the micro machine tools. Many fuming experiments were carried out with diamond-cutting tools to evaluate cutting capability of a machine tool. Continuous flow type chip could be obtained even if the cutting speed was very low due to small diameter of workpiece. However, thorough investigation about machineability in micro/meso cutting is inevitable to assure high quality surface roughness in micro machine tool.

The comparisons of performance characteristics between the super-mirror face grinding machine using variable air pressure developed in this laboratory to grind precisely the sliding face of a surface hardened workpiece with thermal spray and the conventional one are investigated by measuring the surface roughness and hardness for a SCM440. To process variously workpiece according to shape, size and materials, the rotating and contacting forces of the developed grinding machine can be changed by air pressure. The surface roughness of processed workpiece can be also attained to state of mirror face by grinding precisely the sliding face with changing the rotating speed of diamond wheel. It is possible to be attached to the various machine tools because the super-mirror face grinding machine using variable air pressure is a small size. The grinding efficiency is elevated because it can be worked by two or more grinding machines attached to concurrently a machine tool for the large workpiece. In this study, results show that the cusp height of the super-mirror face grinding machine for the particle size of 100 and $1500No./mm^2$ is lower than that of the conventional one because the vibration is reduced by rotating very fast the diamond wheel with a pressed air and it can be processed by rotating the diamond wheel with a constantly varied air pressure perpendicular to workpiece surface, and that the workpiece in the super-mirror face grinding machine for the particle size of $3000No./mm^2$ can be processed to state of mirror face that is rarely seen by the cusp height. It is also found that the surface hardness of both the conventional and the super-mirror face grinding machines are increased as the particle size of diamond wheel is reduced, and the surface hardness of the super-mirror face grinding machine is HRC 1.1 ~ 1.8 higher than that of the conventional one.

This paper is concerned with the machinability of fine ceramics(Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$) by using sintered diamond tools. For this purpose, ceramics cutting experiments under various cutting conditions such as cutting speed, feed rate, and others were carried out. The main results are follows : (1) During the cutting of fine ceramics, the used tools were found to be slightly chattering at cutting speed of 70m/min, and at cutting speed of higher than this I found the fine ceramics difficult to be cut. (2) When I used a tool with large nose radius, there occured a small amount of wear on the flank of the tool. However, at the early stage of fine ceramics cutting, the tools with smaller nose radii were required mainly to prevent the chipping of the ceramics. (3) When the materials were dry-cut, the appropriate cutting speel was found to be lower than 40m/min, and when the materials were dry-cut, I could cut them without any difficulty even at the speed of 70m/min, the surface roughness of ceramics cut at the speed of 70m/min was considerly fine. (4) It is generally believed that the principal cutting force is the largest in the case of steels cutting, but I found the thrust cutting force to be larger than any other cutting forces in the case of ceramics cutting.

Ultra precision cutting should be satisfied with two conditions of Mirror Like and shape grade, and especially Mirror Like depends on surface roughness. In this study, in order to develop Mirror Cutting for Al alloy, this was done with edge form of single crystal diamond tool divided into R type and S type. Surface roughness machined by S type tool is more satisfactory than by R type tool, being the lowest value of 13.8nm. In addition, Mirror surface can reach above 90% of reflection rate by both R type and S type tool, but machined surface by R type tool has much more fine fracture portions rather than by S type tool. Even though feed rate decreases from 5.mu.m to 1.mu.m, surface roughness doesn't show improvement.

Since polycrystalline diamond (PCD) has high hardness like diamond, it has been used as tool material for lathe and milling of non-ferrite material. A micro tool fabricated from PCD material can be used for micro machining of hard material such as tungsten carbide, glass, and ceramics. In this paper, micro PCD tools were fabricated by micro EDM (electrical discharge machining) and used for micro grinding of glass. Craters generated on the tool surface by EDM spark work as like grits in grinding process. The effects of tool shapes, tool roughness and PCD grain size were investigated. Also studied was a hybrid process combining electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM) and micro grinding for micro-structuring of glass.
Co-0.5C-(15~20)Cr-20Ni-8W-(2~7)Fe alloy bond in diamond-impregnated abrasive tool was synthesized by ball-milling and mechanical alloying process. When the powders were mechanical alloyed for 6h, micro-welding in most metal powders was observed irrespective of addition of stearic acid. Without stearic acid in metal powders, partial-ly coarse powders were obtained, which could be unfaverable to the densification of composite of composite powders. The hot-pressed compacts showed rupture strength of 1100MPa and hardness of about $46H_{RC}$, respectively.

A study was carried out to fabricate the cutting tool geometry with micro/nanoscale on the single crystal diamond tool by using the FIB. The FIB technique is an ideal tool for TEM sample preparation that allows for the fabrication of electron-transparent foils. The FIB is appropriate techniques to sample and subsequently define the chemical composition and the structural state of mineral inclusion on the micro/nanoscale. The combination of FIB with a SEM allows for 3D information to be obtained from samples including 3D imaging. Cutting strategies were demonstrated to improve the performance of cutting tool geometry and to generate high aspect ratio micro cutting tool. A finely focused beam of 30keV Ga+ ions was used to mill cutting tool shapes for various micro patterns. Therefore FIB sputtering is used to shape a variety of cutting tools with dimensions in the $1-5{\mu}m$ range and cutting edge radii of curvature of under 50nm.

Polycrystalline diamonds(PCD) tools are widely used in machining a large variety of advanced materials. However, the manufacture of PCD tool blanks is not an economical process. The shaping of PCD blanks with conventional machining methods(such a grinding) is long, labor-intensive process. This paper reports experimental investigation of the influence of electrical machining conditions on the metal removal rate of WEDM of PCD. Experimental results show that the longer pulse-on time and the shorter pulse-off time increase the metal removal rate and worsen the surface quality. The smaller grain size of diamond yields the metal removal rate and shows the better surface quality. Higher electrical conductivity of water yields worse surface roughness.

Recently optical and electric and electronic forms in the field of ultra fine patterns has been used extensively, and techniques of the optical parts are required that can precision-machine this micro-patterns such as V or R-shaped micro-groove patterns. In this study, V and R type, shaping the way micro groove brass machining process to characterize the material feed rate and cutting depth and the V and R as a variable brother, using two kinds of diamond tools for each picture shape and surface roughness caused by conditions such as chips, processed through the analysis of effects of geometry and analysis such as precision machining.
The purpose of this study was to observe the facial, lingual and gingival walls of the cavity walls with various kinds of cutting tools. Class II cavities were prepared in newly extracted sound humen mandibular 1st left premolars, and observed in Sanning electron microscope. Diamond point (#201) and Tungsten Carbide burs (#170L) were used in ultra high speed handpieces (rpm 200000), and Tungsten Carbide bur (#702) and Steel bur (#560) were used in conventional handpieces (rpm 6000). All cavities were prepared under water spray, except for some which were finished with a dry abrasive stone (#57). Some cavities were finished with chisels (#41, 42, 83). The following results were obtained. 1. The cavity walls prepared with Diamond point were rougher than the cavity walls with Carbide burs and Steel burs. 2. The chisels were produced the smoothest surface. 3. The cavity walls which were prepared with cutting blades rotated toward enamel surface from outside, were smoother than cavity walls which were prepared with cutting blades rotated toward outside from the enamel surface.
