Reproductive cycle, the condition index, sex ratio of the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas were investigated by histological and morphometric data. The specimens were collected in the two oyster farms of Geoje and Namhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, from November 1995 to October 1996. Growth of shell length in two regions was similar, but growth of total weight of the oyster in Namhae was faster than that in Geoje oyster farm. The spawning periods in female and male clams were from July to October in Geoje and from June to October in Namhae oyster farm. Ripe oocytes were approximately 50 m in diameter. The reproductive cycle of in females and males in Geoje and Namhae oyster farms can be divided into five successive stages: early developing, late developing, ripe, partially spawned and spent/inactive. Monthly changes in gonad developmental phases showed somewhat different patterns between female and male clams except for the spawning period. On the whole, however, monthly changes in the gonad developmental phases showed a similar pattern in the same sex. The sex ratios of females to males in Geoje and Namhae oyster farms were not significantly different from a 1:1 sex ratio ($x^2$ = 0.55 (p > 0.05) in Geoje and $x^2$ = 0.27 ( p > 0.05) in Namhae). Artificial induction of maturation by heating of adult oysters (two-year-old) was investigated from 17 January to 18 March in 1996. Maturity at the fixed water temperature group of $20^{\circ}C$ was 80%, it showed the highest maturity of experimental groups cultured for five weeks. The survival (%) of Crassostrea gigas in the raised water temperature experimental groups (15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) were over 98.5%, as similar to the control group (100%). But, the survival of C. gigas in the fixed water temperature experimental groups (15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$) were decreased with the increase of the water temperatures. In the fixed water temperature experimental group of $30^{\circ}C$, the survival was 51.1%. Base on these results, the fixed water temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ was the best condition for artificial induction of sexual maturation.

A secondary injection system in a diesel engine has benefits: it can be controlled independently without interrupting engine control, it can be adapted to various layouts for exhaust systems, and it pose no reductant dilution problems compared to post injection systems in the combustion chamber or other supplemental reductant injections. In a secondary injection system, the efficiency of the catalyst depends on the method of reducing the supply. The reductant needs to be maintained and optimized with constant pressure, the positions and angles of injector is a very important factor. The concentration and amount of reductant can be changed by adjusting secondary injection conditions. However, secondary injection is highly dependent upon the type of injector, injection pressure, atomization, spray technology, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to establish injection conditions the spray characteristics must be well-understood, such as spray penetration, sauter mean diameter, spray angle, injection quantity, etc. Uniform distribution of the reductant corresponding to the maximum NOx reduction in the DeNOx catalyst system must also assured. With this goal in mind, the spray characteristics and impingement plate types of a secondary injector were analyzed using visualization and digital image processing techniques.
Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii Henry is a short and creeping evergreen shrub which reaches about 60 cm in height and only occurs in the northeast Asia and in the top of high mountains over the Korea. The Korea Forest Service protects it strictly by law since J. chinensis var. sargentii is an eccentric plant and possibly may be exterminated soon in Korea. This study was carried out to develop the propagation technique by cutting for conservation of genetic resources of J. chinensis var. sargentii. The rooting responses of branch cuttings, obtained from hard(May) and semi-hard wood shoots (August) to four growth regulators, namely, IAA, IBA, NAA and Rooton(exceptionally powder method) applied at various concentrations(0, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 $mgL^{-1}$) were examined in mixed soil media. Rooting rate showed significant difference between cutting times, among kinds and among concentrations of growth regulators. The optimum cutting time was April to May in hardwood cutting. The application of IBA 1000 $mgL^{-1}$(rooting rate : 36.4%) was most effective in callus formation and rooting of cutting. Relatively, rooting of cutting of the control taken in May was 30.4%. Root characteristics such as number, length and diameter of root were not significantly affected by kinds and concentrations of growth regulators in hardwood cutting.
This study was carried out to develop cultivation techniques of Climacium japonicum in transparent pot. We analyzed effect of different soil moisture content, air exposure degree, bed soil and ground cover moss on the growth of Climacium japonicum. The best humidity condition in transparent pot culture was 60~80% and a mixture of bed soil with peatmoss : perlite as 7:3 ratio was effective to growth. Two holes(each diameter is 4 mm) in the cover were also effective to the growth and control moisture in the transparent pot. The best mixture of bed soil was moss with peatmoss : pelite(7:3) in the pot culture but price of moss is expensive, the moss treatment was not practical. Total of 10 moss species were selected as ground cover plant; Hypnum erectiusculum Sull. et Lesq., Thuidium kanedae Sak., Hypnum plumaeforme Wils., Trachycystis microphylla Lindb., Bryum argenteum Hedw., Hypnum oldhamii Jaeg., Funaria hygrometrica Hedw., Leucobryum glaucum Aongstr., Polytrichum commune Hedw. and Weissia controversa Hedw. The plant height of selected moss was smaller than that of Climacium japonicum so these moss were very effective to cover the ground.
Radiation synovectomy is one of the most useful methods for treating patients with refractory synovitis because of its convenience, long-term effects, repeatability and the avoidance of surgery. In this study, we investigated the toxicity, stability and biodistribution of a rhenium-188 ($^{188}$Re)-tin colloid to evaluate its suitability as a synovectomy agent. Twenty four hours after injecting the $^{188}$Re-tin colloids (74 KBq/0.1 mL) into the tail vein of ICR mice, most of the $^{188}$Retin colloidal particles was found in the lungs. In addition, there were no particle size changes at either room temperature or at $37^{\circ}C$ after injecting the $^{188}$Re-tin colloids in human plasma and synovial fluid. In vitro stability tests showed that the $^{188}$Re-tin colloid remained in a colloidal form without a critical size variation over a 2-day period. We investigated the leakage of $^{188}$Retin colloids from the intraarticular injection site with gamma counting in New Zealand white rabbits. The $^{188}$Re-tin colloids (55.5 MBq/0.15 mL) were injected at the cavum articular and the mean retention percentage of the $^{188}$Re-tin colloid was 98.7% for 1 day at the injection site, which suggests that there was neither change in the particle size nor leakage at the injection sites. In the biodistribution study with the SD rats, the liver showed the highest radioactivity (0.0427% ID/organ) except for the injected knees (99.49%). In the SD rats, mild toxicities including the skin or a synovium inflammation were observed as a result of a radioactivity of 15 mCi/kg at the intraarticular injection site. However, there was no systemic toxicity. In the Ovalbumin (OVA)-induced arthritic rabbits, the $^{188}$Re-tin colloid improved the macroscopic, the histological score and reduced the knee joint diameter when compared to the arthritic control. In conclusion, a $^{188}$Re-tin-colloid is considered as a strong candidate for radiation synovectomy with a superior efficacy and safety.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of formulation variables on the release of cefadroxil form chitosan beads, to optimize the preparation of chitosan beads loaded with the drug for controlled release, and to evaluate the drug release form chitosan beads in dogs. Chitosan beads were prepared with tripolyphosphate (TPP) by ionic cross-linking and those sizes were less than 1 mm in diameter. The release behaviour of cefadroxil was affected various factors. As pH of TPP solutions decreased, the entrapment efficiency of cefadroxil increased, whereas the release of cefadroxil decreased. The release rate of cefadroxil form chitosan beads decreaed with the increased TPP solution concentration. When cross-linking time increased, the release of the drug from chitosan beads decreased. The cefadroxil loaded beads were implanted to 4 mixed breed dogs. The concentration of cefadroxil in sera due to chitosan beads implanted with 50 mg/kg body weight of beads was sustained more than 1 ug/ml for the whole 7 days period. Therefore, the cefadroxil loaded beads can be used successfully in pyoderma of dogs. These results indicate that chitosan beads may become a potential delivery system to control the release of drug.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of various fertilizer levels on the growth and yield of Scutellaria baicalensis Georg cultivated after the barley in the southern coastal areas of Korea under the non-mulching condition by direct sowing culture. The flowering date of medium dressing plot $(N\;:\;P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O=9\;:\;13.5\;:\;9 kg/10a)$ and heavy dression plot $(N\;:\;P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O=12\;:\;18\;:\;12kg/l0a)$ were July 23. The flowering date of the medium and the heavy dressing plot was delayed by 3days compared with that of non-fertilizing plot. The growth characteristics such as stem length, diameter of main stem, number of branch per plant, main root length, main root thickness and dry weight of stem leaves were more increased at medium dressing plot than that of other fertilizer levels. The root dry weight of in Scutellaria baicalensis Georg cultivated after barley was highest at the fertilizing plot of N, $P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O$ = 9 : 13.5 : 9kg/10a. The dried-root yield was 178kg in medium dressing plot, 167kg in standard dressing pot, and 126kg in non-dressing plot. The dried-root yield of medium dressing plot was 7% and 41% higher than that of standard dressing pot and non-dressing control plot, respectively.
Objective: This study aimed to ascertain the curative effects of Gamisipjeon-tang (GST) used for wound healing on the skin regeneration of deep second degree burns in mice. Material & Methods: In vitro, the $I{\kappa}B$ kinase (IKK) mRNA expression, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA expression, and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mRNA expression in the GST concentration from 1 mg/$m{\ell}$ to 10 mg/$m{\ell}$ were measured. In vivo, the mice were divided into four groups : the normal group, the BE group (burn-elicited group, control group), the DC group (Duoderm CGF-treated group after burn elicitation), and the GST group (Gamisipjeon-tang treated group after burn elicitation). To determine the anti-inflammatory effects, nuclear factor (NF)-${\kappa}B$ p65, iNOS, COX-2 positive reaction were measured by immunohistochemistry. To estimate the skin regenerative effects, change of burn area, 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) positive reaction were analyzed. Results: In vitro, the iNOS, IKK, COX-2 mRNA expression decreased according to the increase of GST concentration. The significant decrease of COX-2, iNOS, NF-${\kappa}B$ positive reaction were the highest in the GST group, followed by the DC group and the BE group (p<0.05). The diameter of burn area was significantly decreased in the GST group as compared to that in the DC and BE group (p<0.05). The BrdU and FGF positive reaction increased more significantly in the GST group than in the DC group, and more significantly in the DC group than in the BE group on the 3rd and 7th day after burn (p<0.05). FGF positive reaction increased in the BE and DC group, whereas it decreased significantly in the GST group on the 14th day (p<0.05). The BrdU positive reaction increased in the BE group, whereas it decreased significantly in the DC and GST group on the 14th day (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study shows that GST could decrease the inflammatory response and accelerate the skin regeneration as compared to the duoderm CGF in mice with deep second degree burns.
Objectives : This study evaluates the hair growth promoting effect of Yonnyuniksoogobon-dan on shaved C57BL6 mice. Methods : Yonnyuniksoogobon-dan was administered orally (Group I) and both orally and by skin application (Group II) once a day for 12 days. The experimental groups were compared to Control, which was orally administered physiological saline solution. Hair regrowth was photographically and histologically determined during the experimental period. The levels of hair growth cycle related factors (EGF, TGF-${\beta}$1) and vascular factors (VEGF, iNOS) were also determined by immunohistochemistry. On gross observation of hair growth, both Group I and Group II shaved C57BL6 mice showed accelerated hair regrowth. Results : The hair regrowth index of Group I increased significantly from 7 days (P<0.05) to 12 days (P<0.01) after shaving and that of Group II was significantly higher at 12 days (P<0.05). On histological observation, both Group I and Group II demonstrated histological improvement and increases in the number and diameter of the hair follicles. EGF expression on the root sheath of hair follicles was up-regulated in both Group I and II. TGF-${\beta}$1 expression on the root sheath of hair follicles was unchanged in both Group I and II. VEGF expression in the tissues surrounding hair follicles was up-regulated in both groups. iNOS expression in the tissues surrounding hair follicles was down-regulated in both groups. Conclusions : These results suggest that Yonnyuniksoogobon-dan promotes hair growth and this effect is related to up-regulation of EGF and VEFG expression and down-regulation of TGF-${\beta}$1 and iNOS expression on hair roots.
The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of dentin surface conditioners on the dentin surfaces. Freshly extracted human molars were used in this study. They were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ saline solution before experiment. The crown portions of the teeth were cut in various directions by means of wet diamond point to expose dentin which include transverse, vertical oblique, horizontal and oblique cut to the long axis (Fig. 1). Each tooth was then mounted with self curing acrylic resin in brass ring to expose the flattened dentin surfaces. Final finish was accomplished by grinding the dentin specimens with wet No. 180 and No. 600 grit silicon carbide abrasive paper until a 6.0mm in diameter on a dentin surface was exposed without pulp exposure. The specimens were divided into 9 groups according to the modes of dentin treatment procedure. The following surface treatments were applied on these preparation surfaces; Group 1: unetched (control group) after finish with No. 600 silicon carbide abrasive paper. Group 2: etched with 30% phosphoric acid for 60s Group 3: etched with 10-3 solution for 60s Group 4: Cleaned with 5% NaOCl for 30s Group 5: applied Dentin Adhesit Group 6: cleaned with 5% NaOCl followed by applying the Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$ Group 7: applied Photo Bond on the unetched dentin followed by applying the Photo Clearfil Bright Group 8: Etched with 30% phosphoric acid followed by applying Photo Bond and Photo Clearfil Bright Group 9: etched with 10-3 solution followed by applying Photo Bond and Photo Clearfil Bright All the specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ under 50% relative humidity for 24 hours before observations. The specimens in 7, 8, and 9 group, omitting the group 1 to 6, were demineralized in 10% HCl for 10s in order to observe the resin tags. All the specimens in each group were then dried at room temperature. The dried specimens were ion coated with Eiko ion coater (Eiko-engineering Co.), and observed in Hitachi S-430 Scanning electron microscope (Hitachi, Co. Tokyo) at 15KV. The following results were obtained as follows; 1. The smear layers were still remained in group 1,2,4,5, and 6. 2. There is no effect of 5% NaOCl and 30% phosphoric acid on the changes of dentin morphology 3. The dentin treated with 10-3 solution, indicating the tubules opened when the smear layer and the dental plug dissolved. 4. In case of applying the bonding agents the resin tag was not formed at the deep area of dentinal tubules, but in case of applying the Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$ that was not.
