  • Recently, DGPS or RTK-GPS techniques enable us to use satellite based positioning systems with high accuracy. But in urban area, navigation systems suffer from problems such as signal blockage by high-rise buildings, multi-path problems, and so on. So we have to know numbers of visible satellites and quality of signals received at the ground level in urban area as accurate as possible. In this paper, we developed a simulation system called LoQAS [Location service Quality Assessment System, 2002, the University of Tokyo] which can simulate numbers of visible satellites and DOP values using accurate satellite orbital data and 3-D digital map. In this time, we evaluated this system and extended it to deal with reflected signals to assess multi-path problems.

  • The purpose of this study is to maximize the use of framework data by a method for updating road framework data using a economical, rapid, and accurate Vehicle-based kinematic survey to get the latest road data among "transportation framework data" which was built in 2003. We collected data using a Vehicle-based kinematic survey with DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) in Daejeon and Pyeongtaek city and verified the accuracy of line and point features between surveying and previous results. The result showed that Daejeon city which is located near GPS CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Station)s and receive a signal well had lower errors than 1/5,000 digital base map, and Pyeongtaek city which is located far from the stations and receive a signal badly had errors beyond the limits. The study showed that postprocessing method or Total Station surveying should be used where signals cannot be detected well after analyzing a receiving rate from GPS CORSs, the stations of other organizations should be shared, and further studies are needed.

  • In this study, we analyzed the signal environment of 17 DGNSS stations operated by DGPS Central Office through TEQC quality checking, visibility analysis and site visits. With TEQC, we produced times series of four indices of TEQC quality checking: observation ratio, L1 pseudorange multipath, L2 pseudorange multipath, and the frequency of cycle slip events. From visibility analysis, the directions where missing observations are happening were identified and the result was verified through onsite investigation. Without considering TEQC indices at the six sites(Palmido, Eochungdo, Geomundo, Pyeongchang, Seongju, and Chungju), the average TEQC indices were: 98% observation ratio, 0.19m of L1 pseudorange multipath, 0.71m of L2 pseudorange multipath, and 1.3 cycle slips per 1000 observations. The observation ratios at Palmido and Eochungdo were low. It was found that receiver settings were incorrect so that they could track the P2 signal of GPS satellites with L2C capability. No signal-blocking obstacles were found around the Geomundo station except the lighthouse. Thus, we guess that the poor TEQC indices at the site are believed to be caused by problems in the GPS hardware or cables. The low observation ratio at Pyeongchang is being caused by the surrounding hills blocking the satellite view from the south to the northwest directions. Even though all of four TEQC indices were bad at Seongju and Chungju stations, we found that the signal reception environment at the two sites is in good condition. We think that the quality indices got poor probably because of malfunctioning equipment. So, further investigation is needed for the Seongju and Chungju sites.

  • After the removal of SA (Selective Availability), horizontal accuracy of 25m(2dRMS) is easily obtained using GPS (Global Positioning System). In this paper, the error characteristics without SA are analyzed and a navigation algorithm concerns this error characteristics is proposed to further improve the accuracy. The proposed method utilizes the relationship between elevation angle and errors that are remained after ionospheric and troposheric delay compensation. The relationship is derived from real measurements and used as a weighting matrix of weighted least squares estimator. Furthermore, a RAIM (Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring) technique is included to remove abnormal measurements affected by multi-path or low SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio). It is shown that using the proposed method, more than 4 times accurate result, which is comparable with DGPS (Differential GPS), can be obtained from experiments with real data. Besides accuracy and reliability, the proposed method reduces large jumps in position and maintains better performance than a method using mask angle to completely remove satellites below this mask angle. Thus it is expected that the proposed method can be efficiently applied to land navigation where some satellites are blocked by building or forest.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a low cost inertial navigation system(INS) using an inertial measurement unit(IMU), a digital compass, GPS, and an embedded system. The system has been developed for a transporter that load and unload ship blocks in a shipbuilding yard. When the transporter would move from place to place, they would periodically pass under obstructions that would obscure the GPS signal. This increases the error when estimating the position. Thus the INS has been used to improve position accuracy. INS is also capable of providing continuous estimates of the transporter's position and orientation. Even though IMU is typically very expensive, this INS is made of "low cost" components and the indirect Kalman filtering algorithm.

  • In ocean field, the spread of the Fourth Industrial Revolution based on information and communication technology requires high precision and stable PNT&D (Position, Navigation, Timing and Data). As the IMO (International Maritime Organization) and IALA (The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities) are requiring backup systems due to mitigate vulnerabilities and the increase of dependency on GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), Korea is conducting a research & development of R-Mode. An DGPS (Differentiate Global Positioning System) reference station that uses MF, an existing maritime infrastructure, and AIS (Automatic Identification System) base stations that use 34 integrity station and VHF will be utilized in this study to avoid redundant investment. Because there are radio shadow areas that display low signal levels in the west sea, the establishment of new R-Mode reference and integrity station will be intended to resolve problems regrading the radio shadow area. Because the frequency has a characteristic in that radio wave transmits well along the ground (water surface) in low frequency band, simulation and measurement were conducted therefore this paper to propose candidate sites for R-Mode reference and integrity station resulted through p wave's propagation characteristics analysis. Using this paper, R-Mode reference and integrity station can be established at appropriate locations to resolve radio shadow areas in other regions.

  • Low-power long-range networks (LoRa) has a comprehensive coverage of up to 30 km, so that long-range positioning is possible. However, the position error in the current LoRa environment is over 500 m. This makes it difficult to use practical location services in the LoRa environment. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the position accuracy by correcting an inaccurate visual error when sending a signal from a mobile node to a gateway through the reference node of each zone in the LoRa environment. Experiments were carried out using MATLAB, and a radio propagation algorithm, the Hata model, was used to cancel out the stationary noise and to evaluate the environmental noise. Experimental results showed that the error range decreased as the number of reference nodes increased and a mobile node approach the reference node.

  • GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Position Accuracy depends on pseudo-range measurement and DOP (Dilution Of Precision) which indicates about navigation satellite geometry. Pseudo-Range has many error sources such as satellite clock, orbit, ionosphere, troposphere, multipath and so on. For the improvement of the accuracy, user can use corrected pseudo-range in DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System), which is one of the relative positioning methods. But, stationary station is needed in relative positioning. In case of DOP, Signal reception environment is important. If receiver sets in the center of city, it could be interrupted reception by buildings. This environment leads to decrease the number of visible satellites and to increase DOP. This paper proposes the concept of GNSS positioning with virtual satellites which have usable VRM (Virtual Range Measurement). Via virtual satellites and VRM, users could get an accurate position. Especially referred virtual satellites constellation has an effect on vertical error.
