Various soil behaviors usually occurring in the geotechnical problems, such as, cutting and embankments, stability of slope, seepage, consolidations, shearing failures and liquefaction, should be predicted and analyzed in any way. An approach of these predictions may be followed by the development of the constitutive equations as first and subsequently solved by numerical methods. The purpose of this paper is develop the constitutive equation of sands uder monotonic or cyclic loadings. The constitutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. And the equation is included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effects and Pender's theory. The model is later evaluated and confirmed the validity by the test data of Ottawa sand, Banwol sand Hongseong sand. The following conclustions may be drawn: 1. The consititutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parpameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. The equation in included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effect and Pender's theory. 2. For Ottawa sand, the result of the constitutive equation shows a better agreement than that of Oka et al. The result of axial strain agrees well with the tested data. However, the result of horizontal strain is little bit off for the cyclic loadings or large stress. It is thought that the deviation may be improved by considering Poisson's ratio and precise measurement of shear modulus. 3. Banwol sand is used for the strain and stress tests with different relative densitites and confining pressures. The predeicted result shows a good agreement with the tested data because the required material parameters were directly measurd and determined form this laboratory. 4. For Hongseong sand, the tests under same amplitude of cyclic deviatoric stress shows a similar result with the tested data in absolute strain. It shows the acute shape of turning point because the sine wave of input is used in the test but the serrated wave in prediction.
Abstract By investigating the stress redistribution caused by the preceding cut blasting when applying the pre-splitting method to tunnel round, an attempt was made to find conditions that were favorable for the propagation of cracks in contour holes. The investigation of the direction of minor principal stress in the numerical analysis revealed that the most significant factor affecting the change of the direction was the loading condition, while the core shape, rock type, and tunnel depth seemed to be less important in determining the direction of minor principal stress. Moreover, the number of cracks tended to increase with the increase of deviatoric stress. Through the model test of pre-splitting, it is confirmed that the pre-splitting method taking the stress field into account can reduce the extent of yield zone and has advantage in controlling the direction of crack than the conventional one.

For finite analysis of concrete columns strengthened with glass fiber sheets, an effective concrete model which considers the confining effects by lateral reinforcement and glass fiber sheets is necessary. In this paper, the so-called elasto-plasticity and continuum fracture model (EPF model) is modified to consider high confining effects of strengthened reinforced concrete columns by introducing a simple correction factor ($\alpha$) which relates maximum lateral confining stress of the column to the evolution of deviatoric plasticity. Then, a finite element analysis is carried out for the strengthened reinforced concrete columns using the modified EPF model and equally spaced truss elements. It is shown that the, analysis predicts well the failure behavior of reinforced concrete columns strengthened with glass fiber sheets.
The prediction of soil response under repetitive mechanical loadings remains challenging in geotechnical engineering applications. Modeling the cyclic soil response requires a robust model validation with an experimental dataset. This study proposes a unique method adopting linearity of model constant with the number of cycles. The model allows the prediction of the terminal density of sediments when subjected to repetitive changes in pore-fluid pressure based on the two-surface plasticity. Model simulations are analyzed in combination with an experimental dataset of sandy sediments when subjected to repetitive changes in pore fluid pressure under constant deviatoric stress conditions. The results show that the modified plastic moduli in the two-surface plasticity model appear to be critical for determining the terminal density. The methodology introduced in this study is expected to contribute to the prediction of the terminal density and the evolution of shear strain at given repetitive loading conditions.

The results of monotonic and cyclic uniaxial compression tests, in which the deviatoric component of the stress is predominant, carried out on green and recrystallized iron compacts with different levels of density are presented and discussed in order to analyse the macro and micro-mechanisms governing the mechanical behaviour of non-sintered PM materials. The plastic deformation of the particles, especially at the contact areas between neighbouring grains, produces an internal friction responsible for the main features observed in the behaviour of green metallic compacts. These results show important discrepancies with the plasticity models, Cam-Clay and Drucker-Prager Cap.
This paper presents exact close form solutions of plastic limit loads of a clamped circular plate under uniformly distributed load with different loading radii. A unified yield criterion, which includes a family of piecewise linear yield criteria and the commonly adopted yield criteria such as the Tresca criterion and the maximum principal deviatoric stress criterion or the twin shear stress criterion that are its special cases, and the Mises criterion can be approximated by it, is employed in the analysis. The plastic limit loads, moment fields and velocity fields of the clamped circular plate are calculated based on the unified yield criterion. The influences of the yield criteria, the edge effects and the loading radius on the plastic limits of the clamped circular plate are investigated. Analytical results are calculated and compared. The exact close form solutions presented in this paper provide efficient approaches for obtaining plastic limit loads and the corresponding moments and velocities of the clamped circular plates. The previously derived solutions based on the Tresca and the Mises criteria are its special cases.

In the trackbed design using elastic multi-layer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus is an important input parameter, which reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. The resilient moduli of crushed stone and weathered granite soil were developed using nonlinear dynamic stiffness, which can be measured by in-situ and laboratory seismic tests. The prediction models of resilient modulus varying with the deviatoric or bulk stress were proposed (Park et al., 2008). To investigate the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of the test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of the test sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 1mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation. The prediction models proposed for resilient modulus were verified by the comparison of the calculated vertical displacements with measured ones during train passages.
In this study, the behavioral characteristics of the fill dam were analyzed during water level fluctuations through a numerical analysis model, and the reservoir safety management plan was prepared. The variation in plastic deviatoric strain, horizontal displacement, stress path, pore water pressure, etc., due to elevation of water level in the upper and lower sides of shell and core were analyzed using numerical analysis software, viz. GTS NX and LIQCA. The analysis results manifest that as the water level in the dam body increases rapidly, the pore water pressure and displacement also increase quickly. It was found that the elevation of the water level causes an increase in pore water pressure in the dam body as well as an increase in the saturation of the dam body and decreased effective stress. It is considered that this type of dam behavior can be the cause of the reduction of strength and stiffness of the dam. Also, it is assumed that the accumulated plastic deviatoric strain due to the deformation of the dam body caused by water infiltration causes an increase in displacement. Based on these experimental results and the results of analyses of the existing reservoir safety diagnosis techniques, an improvement plan for dam safety diagnosis and evaluation criteria was proposed, and these results can be used as primary data while revising dam safety diagnosis guidelines.
Settlement induced by low -level vibration on granular soils is too complect to predict with one or two fact ors. Factors affecting vibration induced settlement were investigated, and a settlement prediction model on granular soils was developed using multifactorial experimental design(MED). Factors such as vibration amplitude, deviatoric stress, confining pressure, soil gradation, duration of vibration, moisture content, and relative density were considered in this study. A special vibratory frame was designed to shake a soil specimen within a triaxial cell. MED allowed the authors to investigate the effect of many factors using a relatively small number of experiments. The most significant factors on settlement were vibrati on amplitued, confining pressure, and defiatoric stress. Comparable settlement was occurred even under low-level vibration ranging from 2.5 to 18mm1sec, and stress am sotropy was found to be an important factor on settlement.

Instrumented indentation technique is a new way to evaluate nondestructive such mechanical properties as flow properties, residual stress and fracture toughness by analyzing indentation load-depth curves. This study evaluated quantitatively the flow properties of steels and residual stress of weldments. First, flow properties can be evaluated by defining a representative stress and strain from analysis of deformation behavior beneath the rigid spherical indenter and the parameters obtained from instrumented indentation tests. For estimating residual stress, the deviatoric-stress part of the residual stress affects the indentation load-depth curve, so that by analyzing the difference between the residual-stress-induced indentation curve and residual-stress-free curve, the quantitative residual stress of the target region can be evaluated. The algorithm for flow property evaluation was verified by comparison with uniaxial tensile test and the residual stress evaluation model was compared to mechanical cutting and ED-XRD results.
