This study is to understand the effect of attachment and deviant peers on juvenile recidivism. The study analyzes a panel of Korean children, youths, and students who are in first year of middle school, and obtains the following results: First, juvenile recidivism increases by 1,5 times, from 180 people (10.2%) in third year of middle school to 278 people (15.7%) in third and last year of high school. 138 people stopped deviant behaviors (72.7%) and 42 people continued such acts (23.3%), showing that children come to stop deviant acts more than not. 236 people (85.6%) are found to have experienced engaging in deviant behaviors during third year of high school. Second, in terms of the effect of attachment and deviant peers in juvenile deviance, particularly attachment to parents, parental affection is found to have a negative (-) effect in third year of middle school, while parental supervision is found to have a negative (-) effect. In peer attachment, peer trust is found to havee positive (+) effects in third year of middle school and deviant peers are found to have positive (+) effects in third year of middle school and third year of high school. Third, in terms of the effect of youth attachment and deviant peers in juvenile recidivism, parental supervision has a negative (-) effect and deviant peers have a positive (+) effect. However, parental affection and peer attachment (friendship, trust) are not found to have an effect. Based on these results, the current study narrates suggestions for the practice of youth welfare.
The purpose of this study is to examine the moderated mediation effects of parenting functioning on the relations between deviant peer's influences and delinquent behaviors in adolescence. To investigate the moderated mediation effects, simple slope test and bootstrapping method based on multiple linear regression(MLR) model were used. This study used data from wave 1-2(2003-2004) of the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). Results showed that poorer parenting increased the probability that adolescents would affiliated with deviant peers, and more association with deviant peers, in turn, was related to delinquency. There was statistical significant interaction between affiliation with deviant peers and parenting in the model for delinquency. It implied that the relation between deviant peers and delinquency depends on the quality of parenting. Finally, indirect effect of earlier parenting on delinquent behavior through affiliation with deviant peers was moderated by later parenting. These results help clarify the conditions under which exposure to parenting behaviors can buffer the negative effect of deviant best friends on delinquent behaviors in adolescence. Practice and policy implications as well as further research topic were discussed to aid the search for highly effective preventive and treatment interventions.
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the mediating effects of delinquent peers between attachment to parents, low self-control and adolescent deviant behaviors. After specifying a research model based on Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime and Hirschi's control theory of delinquency, the study analysed the model using structural equation modeling. The data for this investigation came from a sample of 2,448 Korean adolescents. The results showed the both measurement model and structural model had a good fit to the data and all paths of structural model were statistically significant. The main findings were the attachment to parents and low self-control had direct and indirect effects on adolescent deviant behaviors through delinquent peers. The implications for practical intervention and further research in the field of delinquency were discussed.
The main purpose of this study was to examine pathways from maternal parenting behavior to externalizing problem behavior through deviant peer affiliation and self-concept. A sample of 405 high school students (184 boys and 221girls) in the Gyeonggi-do region of South Korea completed questionnaires focusing on maternal monitoring and adolescent deviant peer affiliation, self-concept, and externalizing problem behavior. Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling. The results demonstrated that maternal monitoring indirectly influences adolescent externalizing problem behavior through deviant peer affiliation and/or self-concept. When maternal monitoring was perceived as low by adolescents, they were more involved with deviant peers. This was followed by a more negative self-concept. Finally, negative self-concept resulted in more externalizing problem behavior by adolescents. The results emphasize that deviant peer affiliation plays a crucial role in increasing adolescent externalizing problem behavior.
This study examined the influence of attachment to parents, parents' monitoring, and deviant peers on trajectories of internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescence. Participants were 2528(1251 male and 1277 female) adolescent from the 2004(age:16 of latent growth curve modeling indicated that (1) Individual differences of internalizing and externalizing problems' nitial levels and changes were significant. (2) Attachment to parents influenced both initial levels and changes of internalizing problems. (3) Attachment to parents and parents' monitoring influenced initial levels of externalizing problems, and deviant peers influenced both initial levels and changes of externalizing problems.
The purpose of this study was to employ the Latent Growth Curve Model(LGM) to investigate the developmental trajectories of children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors and to identify predictors that might have an effect on change and the level of developmental trajectories. Furthermore, we classified the developmental trajectories of children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors, and also analyzed factors which caused differences in developmental trajectories by Semi-Parametric Group-based Modeling. This study used data from wave 1-4(2004~2008) of elementary school fourth grade panel of the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). The results showed that children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors changed significantly from the fourth grade of elementary school to the first grade of middle school. The predictors for developmental trajectories of children's internalizing problem behaviors were gender, self-control, parental conflict, deviant peers, and attachment to teachers. The predictors for the developmental trajectories of children's externalizing problem behaviors were gender, self-esteem, self-control, and deviant peers. The developmental trajectories of children's internalizing problem behaviors was classified into three groups. The developmental trajectories of children's externalizing problem behaviors was classified into four groups.
Typological theories of offending postulate that childhood-onset delinquents have a high likelihood of being serious and chronic offenders and that there are a distinct set of risk factors predicting early-onset antisocial behaviors. It is useful to empirically classify children into subgroups based on their deviant behaviors because it helps us to identify unique factors associated with each subgroup. Using the first two waves of the Korean Youth Panel Survey, Elementary School Data, this study aimed(a) to empirically classify 5th graders into latent delinquent subgroups, and (b) to examine the impact of individual, familiar, school, and peer factors on the latent delinquent classes. Latent class analysis yielded three latent classes based on 15 indicators of deviant behaviors - delinquent class, low-level delinquent class, & normative class. The results from multivariate multinomial logistic regression analyses revealed that being male, reporting low self-control, coming from poor family, high association with deviant peers, and being bullied increased the risk of being in the delinquent class. Moreover, low self-control, aggression, domestic violence, low level of attachment to teachers, and deviant peers independently increased the risk of being in the low-level delinquent class compared to the normative class. Based on the study findings, implications for practice as well as future studies were discussed.
The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effects of protective factors on the relations between deviant peer's influences and delinquent behaviors in adolescence. To investigate the moderating effects, simple slope and region of significance test based on multiple linear regression(MLR) model were used. This study used data from wave 1-2(2003-2004) of the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). Results showed that for female adolescents, self-esteem, parent monitoring, and attachment to parent moderated the link between best friend's deviancy and delinquent behaviors. For male adolescents, however, best friend's deviancy and protective factors didn't show any significant moderating effects. These results help clarify the conditions under which exposure to deviant best friends can influence delinquent behaviors in adolescence. Practice and policy implications as well as further research topic were discussed to aid the search for highly effective preventive and treatment interventions.

This study intended to investigate the characteristics of adolescent drug user in Korea. A questionnaire on adolescent drug use was administered to 1st or 2nd grade 898 students (465 males, 433 females) from 9 senior high schools in Seoul area. The extent of current using six representative drugs such as cigarettes, alcohol, chemical substance inducing hallucination(e,g., thinner, bond etc.), psychostimulant, hypnotic and minor tranqulizer was self-reported. Also their psychological distress, self-concept and individual-related variables such as academic grade, deviant behavior, drug-using peers, the perceived availability of drugs, the degree of family discipline, and the perceived parents' attitude for drinking and smoking were surveyed. Subjects were grouped into six(male) or five(female) subgroups (nonuser, simple experiencer, one kind of drug user, two kinds of drugs user, three kinds of drugs user(male only), minor tranqulizer user) to their extent of drug use. Then ANOVA procedure performed for group comparison of their psychological distress, self-concept and individual-related variables. The results showed that the most popular drugs among adolescents in Korea were cigarettes and alcohol. Minor tranqulizer was used by about 2.8% of male and 7.41% of female subjects. In general abusers showed lower academic grade, more deviant experiences, having more drug-using peers, higher degree of psychological distress, and lower postitive self-concept than nonuser group. According to the results of discriminant analysis, hostility and deviant behavior were reliable predictive variables that distinguished abuser group from nonuser group among the associated variables in this study. These results suggest that some common factors affect drug use of Korean high school students : high school students who have many common risk factors could be abusers more easily. These findings supported risk factor theory that the extent of drug use of adolescents might be associated with general maladjustment in everyday life.
Growth mixture modeling was used to identify types of changes in overt aggression from Grades 4 to 7 among a sample from the Korean Youth Panel Survey. Three discrete patterns were found to adequately explain changes of overt aggression in both boys and girls : Persistent intermediate aggression; Increasing aggression; and Decreasing aggression. Most boys (93%) fell into the Persistent intermediate aggression group and 49% of girls were found to fall into the Increasing aggression group. This suggests that prevention programs should recognize that girls are at risk of increasing aggression in their early adolescence. Multinomial logistic regression analysis shows that self-control, child abuse, peer support, and involvement with deviant peers at Grades 4 were all strongly associated with trajectory class membership. These associations did not differ by gender. These findings suggest that prevention programs should focus on the multiple risk factors of both boys and girls.
