  • This paper introduces the upper stage attitude control system of KSLV-I, which is the first space launch vehicle in Korea. The KSLV-I upper stage attitude control system consists of two electro-hydraulic actuators and a reaction control system using cold nitrogen gas. A proportional, derivative, and integral controller is designed for the electro-hydraulic thrust vectoring system, and Schmidt trigger ON/OFF controllers are designed for the reaction control system. Each attitude controller is designed to have enough stability margins. The stability and performance of KSLV-I upper stage attitude control system is verified via hardware in the loop tests. Hardware in the loop tests are accomplished for perturbed flight conditions as well as nominal flight condition. The test results show that the attitude control loop of KSLV-I upper stage is very stable and the attitude controllers perform well for all flight conditions. Attitude controllers designed in this paper have been successfully applied to the first flight of KSLV-I on August 25, 2009. The flight test results show that all attitude controllers of the KSLV-I upper stage performed well and satisfied the accuracy specifications even during abnormal flight conditions.

  • Global market of unmanned aircraft(UA) is rapidly expending based on the versatile and efficient utility of the UA. Domestically many industries, universities and research institutes are trying to do research and development of the UA in various angle of aspect. In spite of these effort, all the participants of research and development of the UA has been suffering the difficulty of acquiring the airspace around vicinity of Goheung airfield for the flight test of UA. Although the current procedure of execution of the flight test of UA is set after acquiring the airspace by applying the NOTAM(Notice To Air Man) to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport(MLIT) at least 7 days before the flight test and commencing with the publication of the NOTAM by MLIT, if the flight test is carried out as planned, changing or reapplying the NOTAM expends mort time and makes difficulty often. Therefore it is needed that a restricted airspace for the flight test of UA is established and make all the executioner of flight test uses the exclusive airspace without limitation. This research proposes the restricted airspace with short term and long term establish requirement of airspace separately. The short term requirement has been established with the airspace of 10 nm radius and 8,000 ft altitude in which the requirements of flight test can be carried out more than 90% without needs of supplement of the additional airspace. The long term has been established within the airspace of 30 nm radius which is the maximum Radio Line Of Sight(RLOS) and 8,000 ft altitude with exclusion of current air way, airport control area, approaching corridor to the airport, existing restricted area(RA) and Military Operating Area(MOA) for the purpose of minimizing inconvenience of the other airspace user. Once establishing the exclusive airspace for the flight test of UA, research and development of industries, universities and research institutes will be more vigorous and contributes to the national economy.

  • The flight test operational procedure artifact includes mission planning, execution methods, and safety measures for each step of test progress. As the development of guided missiles has become more advanced and strategic, flight test has become increasingly complex and broadened. Therefore, increased reliability of the flight test operation procedures was required to ensure test safety. Particularly, the design of the flight test operational procedures required verification through M&S to predict and prepare for the uncertainty in a new test. The relevant studies have published the optimal framework development for flight tests and the model-based improvements of flight test processes, but they lacked the specificity to be applied directly to the flight test operational procedures. In addition, the flight test operational procedures, which consist of document bases, have caused problems such as limitations of analysis capabilities, insensitive expressions, and lack of scalability for the behavior and performance analysis of test resources. To improve these problems, this paper proposes how to design operational procedure of guided missile flight test system by applying MBSE(Model-based Systems Engineering). This research has improved reliability by increasing the ability to analyze the behavior and performance of test resources, and increased efficiency with the scalability applicable to multiple flight tests. That can be also used continuously for the guided missile flight tests that will be developed in the future.

  • Flight data acquired through flight instrumentation equipment during aircraft development play an important role in aircraft development and performance improvement. Therefore, as the reliability of flight instruments is required, inspection systems to check the soundness of flight instruments are very important. In this paper, we analyze the existing test system for flight data instrumentation equipment and present improvements in the hardware and software aspects of the test system. Based on this, we design and implement a test system with improved performance and present test results. Test system with improved performance improves cost savings, flexible application, and maintenance compared to the existing test system. Therefore, the robustness of the instrumentation equipment can be obtained, which can be expected to improve the reliability of flight data.

  • In this paper, we studied a method of wirelessly checking up the POD for captive flight tests which is performed during the development of guided weapons systems. The wireless power transfer module, the power distribution device, and the battery pack were designed to wirelessly power the captive flight test POD, and the communication device was designed to enable wireless communication between the POD and the check-up device. The communication device was designed to enable WiFi, IR communication, and laser diode communication, so that various communication methods could be tested. Through the performance test, it was confirmed that power was stably supplied to the captive flight test POD, and the wireless communication performance was verified by measuring the delay time and error rate. As a result, by using our system the POD check-up for the captive flight test was performed wirelessly and the data of the captive equipment could be obtained effectively.

  • This paper presents the procedures used for estimating the stability and control derivatives of a general aviation canard aircraft from flight data. The maximum likelihood estimation method which accounts for both process and measurement noise was used for the flight data analysis of a four seat canard aircraft, the Firefly. Without relying on the parameter estimation method, several aerodynamic derivatives were obtained by analyzing the steady state flight data. A wind tunnel test, a flight test of a 1/4 scaled remotely controlled model aircraft, and the prediction of aerodynamic coefficients using the USAF Stability and Control Digital Data Compendium (DATCOM), Advanced Aircraft Analysis (AAA), and Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) were performed during the development phase of the Firefly and the results were compared with flight determined derivatives of a full scaled flight prototype. A correlation between the results from each method could be used for the design of the canard aircraft as well as for building the aerodynamic database.

  • This paper describes development of automatic flight control system for an unmanned target drone which is operated by Korean army as for anti-air gun shooting training. Current target drone is operated by pilot control of on-board servo motor via remote control system. Automatic flight control system for the target drone greatly reduces work load of ground pilot and can increase application area of the drone. Most UAVs being operated now days use high-priced sensors as AHRS and IMU to measure the attitude, but those are costly. This paper introduces the development of low-cost automatic flight control system with low-cost sensors. The integrated automatic flight control system has been developed by integrating combining power module, switching module, monitoring module and RC receiver as an one module. The performance of automatic flight control system is verified by flight test.

  • Analysis of dynamic characteristics and flight vibration test for unmanned aerial vehicles was studied by using dummy test body. The FEM model for dummy test body was supplemented by results of modal and random vibration test. The free end boundary condition to simulate flight environments was made by test setup using bungee cable. Prior to the flight vibration test using a dual electric vibration exciters, the test procedure to calculate quantitative vibration level was studied by using military specification. The actual test was successfully done by using the analysis and pretest results. From the analysis results, it was possible to determine the feasibility of the test by predicting the excitation force of the flight vibration test and to get the response of any point which could not be measured by the test. The results of this study will much contribute to the Test and Evaluation of unmanned aerial vehicles.
