  • Previous studies on the anticonvulsant activity of $N-Cbz-{\alpha}-aminoglutarmides$ have shown that the derivatives of $N-Cbz-{\alpha}-amino-N-alkoxy$ glutarimide have significant anticonvulsant activity. In addition, their anticonvulsant activities are dependent on the presence of N-alkoxy groups. Based on these results, a series of $N-Cbz-{\alpha}-amino-glutarimidooxy$ carboxylates derivatives (3a-e) were synthesized in moderate yield using a known synthetic procedure. Their anticonvulsant activities were evaluated using the maximal electroshock seizure (MES) test, the pentylene tetrazole induced seizure (PTZ) test, and the strychinine (Str) threshold test with the ultimate aim of developing more active anticonvulsants. None of the compounds (3a-e) tested showed anticonvulsant activity in the MES and PTZ test. However, all the compounds tested exhibited significant anticonvulsant activity in the Str. test. The most active compound in the Str. test was the methyl ester of $N-Cbz-{\alpha}-amino-glutarimidooxy$ acetic acid 3a $(ED_{50}\;=\;42.9\;mg/kg)$.

  • The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), which is developing the core technology for the buoyancy engine of underwater gliders, has developed a test module that can vertically ascend and descend with a buoyancy engine to verify the performance of the developed buoyancy engine. The independent test module was tested in a 15 metre deep pit in the Ocean Engineering Basin to verify its ability to ascend and descend. In order to test at a shallower depth than the real sea, it was necessary to know the negative buoyancy value during descent and the time at which the buoyancy engine would be activated. To do this, we solved the equation of motion in the vertical direction to obtain these values and applied them to the tank test. To validate the usefulness of solving the equation, we also compared the depth of descent over time measured in the test with the results calculated from the solution.

  • The ABO blood group has been recently proposed to influence development of oral cancer. The aim ofthis study was to evaluate the association between the type of ABO blood group and oral cancer. In a case-control study, 104 patients with oral cancer were compared with 90 blood donors without cancer as controls. Data regarding the patient demographics, blood groups, Rh status, cancer characteristics and oral habits were also compared between two subgroups of squamous and non-squamous oral cancers. For statistical analysis, Chi-square test, t-student Test and Logistic Regression were used to analyze the relationship between ABO blood groups and oral cancer. The frequency of blood group B was significantly higher in oral cancer patients than controls (32% vs 13%) (p value=0.01), but Rh factor did not show significant difference between cases and controls. According to Logistic Regression, people with blood group B and those older than 50 had 3.5 and 19.4 times elevated risk of developing oral cancer, respectively. The frequency of squamous cell cancer was also significantly higher in men and people older than 50. On the other hand, females, people under 50, and those with blood group B were at 5.6, 2.9 and 4.3 times higher risk of developing non-squamous cell oral cancer, respectively. People with blood group B are at a greater risk of developing oral cancer, and female patients under 50 years of age with blood group B have the highest risk to develop non-squamous cell oral cancer.

  • Window roller housings are durable because high-quality source materials such as stainless steel is used in making them. After a series of precise structure analysis, their design is optimized. They are subject to repetitive driving tests of more 100,000 times, durability tests, impact resistance tests, corrosion tests and others. For a long time, gaps often occur in press molded products owing to serious squareness deformation and flatness deformation of them. Severe burrs in press molded products require frequent grinding, which leads to short life cycle and rough or unreliable movement of assembled roller housing, which, in turn, causes product defects. This study focuses on developing measures to resolve existing defects and to improve lifespan of dies by designing and making a window roller shearing die.

  • In this study, it was to investigate the possibility to use the converts slag, by product in producing steel as a substitute material with sand that is used fur a civil construction materials, in developing techniques to use converts slag to improve soft clay ground. To do this, it was investigated the physical and mechanical properties of the converts slag as a civil construction material. For this, cylindrical cell consolidation with a single vertical drains and large scale soil box test were performed. Through large scale soil box test, the applicability of the converts slag to the present vertical drain techniques which is dependent on sand and plastic drains was studied. As a result of that, it was found that the shape of inserted drains was maintained after completing a consolidation process of a soft clay with slag drains. In addition, we could find that the slag drains showed the similar results with sand drains in soft clay by analyzing the effect of acceleration of consolidation.

  • This paper addresses the outlines of the traffic signal timing principles engaged in TRACS and the results of field test. Research team, encompassing research institute, university, and electronic company, conducted the three-year project for developing the new system, named TRACS(Traffic Adaptive Control System). The project was successfully completed in 1994. TRACS aims at accomplishing the objectives of better traffic adaptability and more reliable travel time prediction. TRACS operates in real-time adjusting signal timings throughout the system in response to variations in traffic demand and system capacity. The purpose of TRACS is to control traffic on an area basis rather than on an isolated intersection basis. An other purpose of TRACS is to provide real-time road traffic information such as volume, speed, delay , travel time, and so on. The performance of the first version of TRACS was compared to the conventional TOD control through field test. The test result was promi ing in that TRACS consistantly outperformed the conventional control method. The change of signaltiming reacted timely to the variation of traffic demand. Extensive operational test of TRACS will be conducted this year, and some functions will be enhanced.

  • Diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been developed to optimize engine out emission, especially particulate matter (PM). One of the main important factors for developing the DPF is estimation of soot mass being accumulated inside the DPF. Evaluation of pressure drop over the DPF is a simple way to estimate the accumulated soot mass but its accuracy is known to be limited to certain vehicle operating conditions. The method to compensate drawback is adoption of integrating time history of the engine out PM and burning soot. Present study demonstrates current status of the soot estimation methods including the results from the engine test benches and vehicles.
