Determination of Ratio of Wood Deterioration Using NDT Technique

  • In ancient wooden structures, the mechanical properties of the structural members have been reduced by time-dependent degradations such as fatigue or creep. Also, the external and internal deterioration was caused by environmental condition, fungi, bacteria, or insect, and then reduced the quality of structural members. However, the previous methods for evaluating the deterioration have been mainly depended on the visual inspection. In this study, therefore, ultrasonic stress wave test, accelerometer stress wave test were used to evaluate the deterioration of structural wood members in ancient wooden structures. Based on the results, the quantitative criteria of stress wave transmitted velocity were proposed to evaluate the deterioration of structural member. The proposed criteria were related to the degree of deterioration. In accelerometer stress wave, the criteria of deterioration of wave reciprocal velocity was below 1800 ㎲/m at incipient deterioration (below 12% ratio of deterioration), between 1800 and 2200 ㎲/m at moderate deterioration (12~17%) and above 2200 ㎲/m at severe deterioration (above 17%). The ultrasonic stress wave, the criteria of deterioration were 800 and 950 ㎲/m at below 8% and above 15% of the degree of deterioration respectively.

  • For ac PDP, the lifetime should be guaranted over, 30000 hours. The lifetime is correlated with the deterioration characteristics for the weakest element in ac PDP. However, the short-term deterioration test method of the at PDP has not well developed. In this paper, a short term deterioration test method of a given element in the ac PDP is proposed. By this method, MgO deterioration characteristics are investigated. The deterioration rate is decreased with MgO thickness but it was almost saturated over 5000$\AA$.

  • In general, the deterioration induced by the freezing and thawing cyclic in concrete structures often leads to the reduction in concrete durability by the cracking or surface spalling. If it can prediction of concrete deterioration subjected to cyclic freezing and thawing, we can rationally do the design of mix proportion in view of concrete durability and the maintenance management of concrete structures. Therefore in this study a prediction method of deterioration for concrete structures subjected to the irregular freezing and thawing is proposed from the results of accelerated laboratory freezing and thawing test using the constant temperature condition and the in-situ weathering data. Furthermore, to accurately predict the concrete deterioration, a method of modification for the effect of hydration increasing during rapid freezing and thawing test is investigated.

  • In this study, the tensile properties of sealants by heat deterioration were measured and analysed to gather the basic data of sealant because these studies do not have been investigated in Korea. Most general one-component silicone sealants were used and test specimen was I-type. The test parameters are sealant types which have different density and heat deterioration time in 80℃. As a result, the rat of reduction in area by heat deterioration was considerable increased at SR-A compared with SR-B. The tensile properties by heat deterioration decreased at SR-A because the specimen by deterioration occurred adhesive failure before tensile test. However, SR-B specimen was increased at maximum tensile stress but decreased at elongation in maximum tensile stress. Also, Maximum principal stress was measured at the edge of specimen by FEM simulation in order to find out failure points.

  • The major objective of this study is to investigate the dynamic behaviors of track due to the deterioration characteristics of ballast for servicing tracks by the field test. The durability of ballast plays an important role in the track behaviour. To estimate the deterioration characteristics of ballast, several tests have been carried out by several scholars. The deterioration characteristics of ballast is one of the most important factor in the dynamic behaviour of track and its life. In this paper abrasion/breakage characteristics of ballast is studied to predict the effect of physical ballast characteristics on ballast track. To reveal deterioration characteristics of ballast, the field test were carried out. The deterioration characteristics, studied in this paper, is applied to the dynamic behaviour of track in various conditions.

  • It have been announced that concrete subjected to freezing and thawing cause deterioration by expanded inside water and contracted at thawing. However, this study descrebe the deterioration mechanism of concrete by freezing and thawing test. Embeded strain gauges were used to measure the inside restrict strain due to the temperature differenct inside and outside the concrete test specimens. Test results showed that using the air entrained admixture and expanded poly-styrene was developed durability of concrete by decreasing inside retrict strain ratio.

  • This paper describes the analysis of deterioration characteristics for connection factor used in grounding system. The connection method of grounding system is specified in IEC standard. In order to analyze the deterioration characteristics for connection factor, deterioration test was carried out when the connection factor was buried in salt water and underground. The test connection factors were C-type sleeve, clamp, and exothermic welding. As a consequence, most of the connection factor was corroded, and the electrical resistance decreased after deterioration. The analytical results can be used to establish the safety of grounding system.
