  • This paper investigates housing defects and housing satisfaction of the aged according to the personal characteristics and their housing environment. Personal interview was made on the 280 senior persons living in Jeonbuk area. Research results are following. Low levels were found in education, self privately-owned property, monthly income. Most of them live in a detached house that is outdated and obsolete. The facility defects of housing were the most serious level in case of the female senior citizen who lives alone. Their house aging was old but had the high deviation among households. Main influencing factors on facility defects of housing were perceived economic status and ownership of house, the next was age of the aged. Main influencing factors on the housing satisfaction were perceived economic status. Housing satisfaction was higher, the better economic level of the aged was, male than female, the less the age was, in case of hot-water usage in bathroom, owner of houses, no difference in floor level, larger storage space of kitchen was. According to the empirical results, we propose the supporting policy of hosing safety for the aged in order to reduce the risk and social cost. Especially the rate of population aging, the aged household, and the detached houses are higher in Jeonbuk rural areas than the other area. Housing facility defects of the elder who lives alone and house aging of theirs are serious level. Local government should have supporting system that considers local difference and characteristics of the aged housing.

  • The purpose of this study is getting information for making a plan of immigrant workers in Korea. As a first step to suggest plans for immigrant workers who have multi-cultural background, this study investigated to the domestic living of Koreans(ChoSun-Tribe) of Gillim province in China. For this, usage of domestic space questionnaire were used. Results of the research were as follows. 1. The most popular LDK type was the one which kitchen was separated from living room and dining room. Most of them thought that kitchen and living room have to be separated. 2. There was no plan for laundry room specially and most houses have a washing machine in the bathroom. Most houses didn't install a bathtub in the bathroom and they didn't think that it was indispensable. 3. It was estimated that they used a living room as a multi-purpose room for the family but used a master bedroom for its own purpose. 4. They used a table and chair for meals normally but they took meals sitting on the floor with a large family or guest. 5.All of them took off the shoes inside of the house for hygienic reason. There was no plan for the space to take on-off shoes in most houses and they just put the mat on the floor for it. 6. Modified Ondol system which use water pipe under the floor was popular in apartment while most detached houses had traditional Ondol system. The satisfaction about Ondol system was very high compared to other ones and also Ondol system was the most desirable one for ChoSun-Tribe.

  • Global demand for dwelling energy and implications of changing climatic conditions on buildings confront the built environment to build sustainable dwellings. This study investigates the variability of future climatic conditions on newly built detached dwellings in the UK. Series of energy modelling and simulations are performed on ten detached houses to evaluate and predict the impact of varying future climatic patterns on five building performance indicators. The study identifies and quantifies a consistent declining trend of building performance which is in consonance with current scientific knowledge of annual temperature change prediction in relations to long term climatic variation. The average percentage decrease for the annual energy consumption was predicted to be 2.80, 6.60 and 10.56 for 2020s, 2050s and 2080s time lines respectively. A similar declining trend in the case of annual natural gas consumption was 4.24, 9.98 and 16.1, and that for building emission rate and heating demand were 2.27, 5.49 and 8.72 and 7.82, 18.43 and 29.46 respectively. The study further analyse future heating and cooling demands of the three warmest months of the year and ascertain future variance in relative humidity and indoor temperature which might necessitate the use of room cooling systems to provide thermal comfort.

  • In this study, we investigated the actual conditions of illumination environment of study rooms in detached houses. From the results, fluorescent lamp as a lighting source and direct lighting method were mainly used. The additional use of local lighting was 48.2[%], and it was not efficient for detailed work. The average illuminance of general lighting and local lighting were 131.41[lx] and 322.57[lx], respectively, and these level were only 54[%] of the lowest illumination standard. This indicates that the lighting levels and the environment are so poor. The satisfaction level of users, however, was relatively high, suggesting insufficient recognition of importancy of lighting for efficient work.

  • Community is crucial for human beings not only because they are born with communal self but also because social cooperation is more efficient than competition in many cases. Human beings are defined as Homo communicus living in residential community which is important for the fulfillment of their primary needs. Residential community is an 'intimacy zone' where personal and emotional interactions are made. This study aims at examining the health of residential community in Korea by exploring the level of place attachment and neighborhood trust. Previous studies indicate that place attachment and trust are influenced by three dimensions such as residents' characteristics, house types and regional environment. This study conducted a nationwide questionnaire survey and it shows that place attachment moulds neighborhood trust. The results of path analysis demonstrates that place attachment and trust appear high in detached house areas. Age of residents also gives positive influence on the level of place attachment and neighbourhood trust. This result gives significant policy implications for the development of residential community in Korea. Residential community as an intimacy zone has been eroded and desperately needs to be revitalized. For this, more concern should be given to the issue of desirable size of residential community and the types of houses. Detached house area must be supported by governmental policies.

  • This study examined the building envelope structure used in small housings near urban area which have not good energy source in relation to the application of passive design for energy saving of small-sized architectural design firms in local cities and aimed to provide the basic materials of future design direction of designers and housing owners by analyzing economy of a project in order to know the amount of energy saving and additional expenses depending on the building envelope pattern. As a result of comparing and examining the energy saving cost from the period of use compared to investment by the thickness of insulating materials based on building envelope pattern for energy saving, it was found that the thicker the insulating materials are, the more energy saving amount is. While the current bead-type insulating materials have short payback period due to low initial investment, extruded insulating materials show the difference of five years compared to bead-type insulation because of its high initial investment.

  • A regional planning is central to addressing various urban problems surrounding the detached housing areas of a metropolitan city of Daegu. The problems are related with decrease in population, socio-economic issues of redevelopment and a sustainable society, the various housing market and housing rights, and a need to explore a desirable alternative to enhance the civil needs when renovating General Residential Zone. The aim of this paper is to look into a possible method of residents led environmental improvement by surveying the residents' consciousness in low-density residential areas. The residents wish to have a residential parking permit program to be set up in place and financial support for old independent houses and finally for lampposts and CCTV to be installed by the administrative assistants. The 75.7 per cent residents who inhabit in the low-density residential areas wish that a residential environmental improvement plan is required and the population at 65.9 per cent could consider a need for the citizens to participate in the residential improvement. 70.3 per cent answered that a consultative group of inhabitants is needed to be built, while 40.5 per cent expressed that they would like to participate in that group in case the group is set up. The possibility of productive residential improvement via resident participation in the low-density residential areas is high, as long as small various environmental improvement projects are created, a resident-consultative group formed, and finally a residential improvement plan is addressed in a comprehensive way.

  • In this study, it was analyzed that, the way of securing publicity and privacy in family and type of public space of the Japanese contemporary detached house, by the composition type of family from one person home to four generation family home. Mostly the living room is made as open plan of LDK type. Mostly, the entrance hall is separate with living room. Even if the case of the entrance hall is connected with living room, it is planned to be recognized as entrance hall, by making entrance poach or connecting it with stair hall. In many case, the public space is designed as traditional Japanese style, such as wellhole style space (吹拔け), courtyard, and Japanese style room (和室). The Japanese style room is adjacent to living room, and used as the space of receiving guests. The wellhole style space and courtyard are recognized as the center of the house, and used as buffer space for ensuring privacy of each generation. The most different point between bachelor house and multi generation family house is another LDK space, living room or kitchen for parents' generation is made separately. Particularly there are many case of making separate small kitchen space, therefore it can be known that, the separation of kitchen space is recognized more importantly than that of living room. And there are many case of making separate entrance hall, two houses under one roof. The spatial composition like this can said as rational method of ensuring the privacy of each generation, and using the public space together as necessary.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the housing area per capita for verifying if the public Big Data, of the building ledger and resident registration ledger, can be used as well as the National Census and Housing Survey. The Mankiw and Weil (MW) model was constructed by extracting samples of general detached houses and flat houses from the public big data, and compared with the result from traditional survey method. Then, the MW models of 25 municipalities in Seoul was established. As a result, it can be confirmed that it is possible to establish MW models comparable to regular surveys using public big data, and to establish a model for each basic localities which was difficult to use as a regular survey method. Public Big Data has the advantage of expanding the knowledge frontier, but there are some limitations because it uses data generated for other original purposes. Also, the difficult process of accessing personal information is a burden to carry out analysis. It is expected that continuing research should be needed on how public Big Data would be processed to complement or replace traditional statistical surveys.
