  • Blast furnace revamping in steel industry is one of the most important work to complete the complicated equipment within a short period of time based on the interfaces of various types of work. P company has planned to build a Smart Tracking System based on the wireless tag system with the aim of complying with the construction period and reducing costs, ahead of the revamping of blast furnace scheduled for construction in February next year. It combines the detailed design data with the wireless recognition technology to grasp the stage status of design, storage and installation. Then, it graphically displays the location information of each member in relation to the plan and the actual status in connection with Building Information Modeling (BIM) 4D Simulation. QR Code is used as a wireless tag in order to check the receiving status of core equipment considering the characteristics of each item. Then, DB in server system is built, status information is input. By implementing BIM 4D Simulation data using DELMIA, the information on location and status is provided. As a feature of the S/W function, a function for confirming the items will be added to the cellular phone screen in order to improve the accuracy of tagging of the items. Accuracy also increases by simultaneous processing of storage and location tagging. The most significant effect of building this system is to minimize errors in construction by preventing erroneous operation of members. This system will be very useful for overall project management because the information about the position and progress of each critical item can be visualized in real time. It could be eventually lead to cost reduction of project management.

  • Design is an iterative, generative, and multidisciplinary process by its nature. Iteration is frequent in most of the engineering design and development projects including construction. Design iterations cause rework, and extra efforts are required to get the optimal sequence and to manage the projects. Contrary to simple design, isolation of the generative iterations in complex design systems is very difficult, but reduction in overall iterations is possible. Design depends upon the information flow within domain and also among various design disciplines and organizations. Therefore, it is suggested that managers should be aware about the crucial iterations causing rework and optimal sequence as well. In this way, managers can handle design parameters related to such iterations proactively. Numbers of techniques are available to reduce iterations for various kinds of engineering designs. In this paper, parameter based Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is chosen. To create this DSM, a survey was performed and then partitioned using a model. This paper provides an easy approach to those companies involved in or intend to be involved in "design and build projects."

  • In this paper, we propose a project-based learning using Arduino as an example of embedded system class in engineering students. By introducing these Project-Based Learning(PBL) into engineering education, students became able to actualize individual theories that they had learned through their major curriculum and they were given the experience to build up their field work ability by participating in the whole project development process. We conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate the education effect of PBL before and after class and the results were analyzed using SPSS statistical program. Since PBL is mainly operated by a team system, communication skills and teamwork within the organization can be improved through interactions among the members. All of the materials produced during the course of the project could be used to make portfolio of students, which could be of great help to data for employment activities after graduation.

  • The incentive and reasons to publish FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Design, Build and Operate Projects(DBO Form) are manifold. It is partly a response to the increasing need for sophisticated project delivery methods in both the public and private sectors and the already widespread use of the FIDIC Yellow Book with operation and maintenance obligations and partly a response to the challenge to decrease maintenance cost to a minimum by means of a new procurement route. As a result, FIDIC has developed a new model form to meet this market place requirement. On the other hand, FIDIC did not simply adapt the Yellow Book but has developed a new form from it, whilst preserving the style of the already known FIDIC Forms and maintaining the wording where it was not necessary to change it for the purposes of a DBO Form. Moreover DBO Form fills up supposed gaps in other FIDIC Forms and ameliorates the claim management and dispute management framework. FIDIC DBO approach may be shortly summarized as follows. First, DBO Form provides for single project responsibility. Second, DBO Form has the clear objective of ensuring the use of a most reliable and efficient technology at the lowest life-cycle cost. Third, DBO Form is intended to operate as an effective quality increase in the design and construction of projects. Fourth, DBO Form is intended to provide significant benefits with regard to system integration and reduction of risks. Fifth, DBO Form accelerates and enhances completion schedule compliance. Sixth, DBO takes care of all three supporting pillars of sustainability(including economical, environmental and social elements). DBO Form is obviously a good starting point for negotiations and the preparation of calls for tenders, thus saving the parties time and money. However, existing cultural and legal differences, particular local conditions and the particular needs of some branches of the industry may require the form to be adapted according to the particular needs of a project. And Civil law practitioners are strongly recommended to verify carefully the underlying legal concepts and background of each clause of the General Conditions in order to avoid unnecessary and sometimes unnatural changes and amendments being made. Note that when preparing the Particular Conditions ensure that terminology is consistent and that existing inherent concepts should not be ignored.

  • The release of a site and building from regulatory control is the final stage of the decommissioning process. The MARSSIM (Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual) provides overall framework for conducting data collection for a final status survey to demonstrate compliance with site closure requirements. The KAERI carried out establishing a final status survey by using the guidance provided in the MARSSIM for of a site and building of the Korea Research Reactor. The release criteria for a site and building were set up based on these results of the site specific release levels which were calculated by using RESRAD and RESRAD-Build codes. The survey design for a site and building was classified by using the survey dataset and potential contamination. The number of samples in each survey unit was calculated by through a statistical test using the collected data from a scoping and characterization survey. The results of the final status survey were satisfied the release criteria based on an evaluation of the measured data.

  • A prestressed/precast concrete system was used to build the new Asian Olympic Stadium Project in Pusan, Korea. The stadium(mainly intended for cycle racing) is designed for the 2002 Asian Olympic Games and has a seating capacity of 20,000 spectators plus a few private suites. More than 1300 prestressed/precast components were used and they include single columns, primary beams, cantilever beams, double riser stands, and double tees. Especially, a total of 24 cantilever beams is used on the fourth story for the stands and double tees. These 8m long beams are post-tensioned to prevent cracking, to increase their durability and to serve serviceability by vibration. A cantilever section with cast-in-place topping is 800mm wide and 1500mm deep. Cantilever beams are connected to the column with the corbel by cast-in place concrete. Bonded post-tensioning tendons were assembled at the job site. Dead-end anchorages were installed in the end of cantilever beams and live-end anchorage is the opposite of them. This article presents the geometric layouts, design features and so on.

  • In an ongoing project at ETRI-CSTL, A debugger for distributed programs that run on a varied collection of machines is being built. To build such debugger, a clientserver model is incorporated. This strategy enables us to provide a unified user interface and isolate debugger core from the user interface. Several debugging servers running on a diverse set of platforms permit the implementation of a distributed debugger for heterogeneous environment, and the single debugging client provides unified debugging concept and graphical user interface over various servers. Also, the precise specification of the interaction protocol between the client and server facilitates client to be paired with a variety of server implementantations. This paper describes the design and implementation of our debugger, concentrating on the system architecture.
