Assessment of New Design Wave by Spread Parameter and Expected Sliding Distance of Caisson Breakwater (확산모수와 제이슨방파제 기대활동량을 이용한 개정 설계파 분석)

  • Extreme value distributions for new deep sea wave were analyzed by using spread parameter and correlations between spread parameter and sliding distance of caisson breakwater were shown in numerical example. When spread parameter is larger than as usual, there occurred extra-ordinarily large wave height among 50 annual maximum significant waves generated by extreme value distribution. Spread parameter of new design wave is identified to be comparably larger than some foreign coastal areas and may cause large sliding displacement though deterministic safety factor for sliding is satisfied with enough margin.

Development of Multidirectional Nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank by Naoe-FOAM-SJTU Solver

  • A three-dimensional multidirectional nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) based on the Navier-Stokes equations and the Finite Volume Method (FVM) is developed by using the two-phase hydrodynamic flow solver naoe-FOAM-SJTU based on the open source toolbox OpenFOAM. The free surface is capturing with the Volume Of Fluids (VOF). The directional wave including Stokes wave, solitary wave and nonlinear wave are simulated and verified. The multi-directional waves are also simulated with particular wave spectral such as JONSWAP and wave directional spreading function. The obtained numerical results show the capability of the solver to generate different type of multidirectional nonlinear waves accurately. Meanwhile, it implies that the presented NWT can easily extend to model the wave-structures interactions, which will be great help to the offshore structures design.

Wave power extraction by multiple wave energy converters arrayed in a water channel resonator

  • The wave power extraction by multiple Wave Energy Converters (WECs) deployed in a Y-shaped Water Channel Resonator (WCR) has been investigated. A WCR consists of a long water channel, and a V-shaped wave guider installed at the entrance of a water channel. If the period of the incident waves coincides with the natural periods of the fluid in a WCR, resonance occurs, as a result, the internal fluid in a WCR is greatly amplified. To estimate the wave power by multiple WECs placed at the antinodal points in a WCR, the heave motion response, time-averaged power, and capture width ratio were calculated for several design parameters. Also, the systematic model tests were conducted in a 2D wave tank. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It was verified that a WCR helps the WECs to produce electricity more effectively by amplifying the wave energy in a WCR.

  • PHEMT's with three different doping structures, -SH(single-heterojunction), DH (double-heterojunction), and DC(doped-channel)-,were designed, fabricated and characterized to study the effect of doping layer structures on the performance of millimeter-wave PHEMT's. 0.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ DH-PHEMT with below-channel doping of 1$\times$10$^{12}$ c $m^{-2}$ was superior to SH-PHEMT by 40% in $I_{dss}$, 20% in f/sib T/ and showed broador gm- $I_{D}$ characteristics which is advantageous to power applications DH-PHEMT showed similar DC and small-signal performance compared with DC-PHEMT. Taking the much higher carrier mobility into considerations, DH-PHEMT is believed to be the best candidate for millimeter-wave, low-noise and/or power applications.s.s.

  • A submerged vehicle which is a nonlinear multivariable system must be designed to be roubst against inner-outer perturbations and hydrodynamic disturbances induces maneuvering operation. But a practical design of motion controller is limited by both mathematical modeling error and linearization errors. Performance of a motion controller based on traditional design method is very poor when the vehicle motion is under wave force distrubacnes near sea surface.   • A magnetostrictive sensor is a sensor measuring elastic waves. Because of its unique non-contact measurement feature, the sensor receives more attentions in recent years. These sensors have been mainly used to measure longitudinal and torsional waves in ferromagnetic waveguides, but there increases an interest in using the sensor for flexural wave measurement. Since the performance of the sensor is strongly influenced by the applied bias magnetic field distribution, the design of the bias magnetic system providing the desired magnetic field is critical. The motivation of this investigation is to design a bias magnetic system consisting of electromagnets and yokes and the specific objective is to formulate the design problem as a bias yoke topology optimization. For the formulation, we employ linear magnetic behavior and examine the optimized results for electromagnets located at various locations. After completing the design optimization, we fabricate the prototype of the proposed bias magnetic system, and test its performance through flexural wave measurements.

A genetic algorithms optimization framework of a parametric shipshape FPSO hull design

  • An optimization framework has been established and applied to a shipshape parametric FPSO hull design. A single point moored (SPM) shipshape floating system suffers a significant level of the roll motion in both the wave frequencies and low wave frequencies, which presents a coupling effect with the horizontal weathervane motion. To guarantee the security of the operating instruments installed onboard, a parametric hull design of an FPSO has been optimized with improved hydrodynamics performance. With the optimized parameters of the various hull stations' longitudinal locations, the optimization through Genetic Algorithms (GAs) has been proven to provide a significantly reduced level of the 1st-order and 2nd-order roll motion. This work presents a meaningful framework as a reference in the process of an SPM shipshape floating system's design.

Generation of Freak Waves in a Numerical Wave Tank and Its Validation in Wave Flume (수치파 수조에서의 극치파 생성과 수조실험을 통한 검증 연구)

  • The freak wave, also known as New-Year-Wave in the north Atlantic, is relatively large and spontaneous ocean surface wave that can sink even large ships and destroy maritime structures. To understand oceanic conditions that develop freak waves, we simulated and generated two versions of scale-downed waves (1:64 and 1:42) in a numerical wave tank and compared the results with the experiment in wave flume. Both of the breaking and non-breaking waves were generated in the simulation. The numerical simulation was implemented based on the finite volume method and a genetic optimization algorithm. Random values were assigned as the initial values for the parameter in the control function, which produced signals representing the motion of wave-maker. The same signal obtained from the optimization process was used for both of the simulation and the experiment. By varying the object function and restrictions of the simulation, a best profile of design wave was selected based on the characteristics, height and period of simulated waves. Results showed that the simulation and experiment with the scale of 1:42 agreed better with freak waves in the natural condition. The presented simulation method will contribute to saving the time and cost for conducting subsequent response analyses of motion under freak waves in the course of the model test for ship and maritime structure.

A Study on the Kinematics of Ocean Waves by Gravity Wave Theory and Stream Function Method (해양파(海洋波)의 운동학(運動學)에 대한 중력파이론(重力波理論)과 Steam Function Method의 비교연구(比較硏究))

  • It is one of the basic problems of naval architecture and ocean engineering how to describe the wave kinematics normally under the assumption of an ideal fluid. At present, there are many wave theories available for design purposes. These can be classified into two groups: One is the analytic theory and the other is the numerical theory. This paper briefly introduces the stream function method of R.G. Dean which belongs to the latter group and shows its numerical evaluations exemplified for two cases: One is applied to observed waves and the other is for design waves. In the former case, the wave profiles are calculated by the stream function method and compared with those of the observed waves and also with the results of R.G. Dean. They show good agreement. In the latter case, the wave kinematics and wave loads on a column of diameter 1m are calculated by the stream function method and these are compared with those resulted from the 5th-order gravity wave theory. As a result of comparison the values by the stream function method are slightly larger than those by the 5th-order gravity wave theory but the difference are negligible. From this it is concluded that the stream function method is very useful. And as characteristics of the numerical theories, the stream function method of R.G. Dean can be easily extended to the higher order terms and can include easily the current velocity and the pressure distribution on the free surface. In addition, when the data of observed wave profile are given, this method can reproduced the observed wave profile as closely as possible so that this method seems to describe the ocean wave more realistically. And from standpoint of a mathematical principle the stream function method exactly satisfies the kinematic free-surface boundary condition.
