  • It is necessary to develop a rational method for evaluating the safety of bridges for the passage of inseparable crane vehicles exceeding the limit weight. In this study, the same method applied to the development of the recently introduced reliability-based highway bridge design code - limit state design method is applied to the calibration of the live load factor for the crane vehicle. Structural analysis was performed on the concrete bridge and the required strengths of the previous design code, the current design code and AASHTO LRFD were compared. When comparing the unfactored live load effect, the live load of the crane was greater than that of the current and previous design code. When comparing the required strength by applying the calibrated live load factor, the previous design code demands the largest strength and the current design code and the crane live load effect yields similar value. The results of safety evaluation of the actual bridges on the candidate route for the crane passage secured the same reliability as the target reliability index required by the design code and the strength of the cross section of the actual bridge is calculated greater than the required strength for the passage of the crane, which confirms the safety for the passage of the crane.

  • Purpose: Majority of bridges and roads in Gangwon Province have been carrying loads associated with heavy materials such as rocks, mining products, and cement. This location-specific live loads have contributed to the present situation of overloading, compared to other provinces in Korea. However, the bridges in Gangwon province are designed by national bridge design specification, without considering the location-specific live load characteristics. Therefore, this study focuses on the real traffic data accumulated on regional weighing station to verify the live load characteristics, including actual live load gross vehicle weight, axle weight axle spacings, and number of trucks. Methods: In order to take into account the location specific live load, a governmental weigh station (38th national highway Miro) have been selected and the passing truck data are processed. Based on the truck survey, trucks are categorized into 3 different shapes, and each shape has been idealized into normal distribution. Then, the resulting survey data are processed to predict the target maximum live load values, including the axle loads and gross vehicle weights in 75 years service life span. Results: The results are compared to the nationally used DB-24 live loads, and the results show that nationally recognized DB-24 live load does not sufficiently represent real traffic in mountaineous region in Gangwon province. Conclusion: The comparison results in the recommendation of location-specific live load that should be taken into account for bridge design and evaluation.

  • AASHTO LRFD and Korean Bridge Design Code (Limit State Design) specify to consider Truck and Lane load simultaneously determined from reliability-based live load model, and impact shall be applied to the truck load while it shall not be applied to the lane load. In this paper, vehicle-bridge interaction analysis under moving truck and lane loads were performed to estimate impact factor of the cables and girders for the selected multi-cable-stayed composite bridges with 230m, 400m and 540m main span. A 6-d.o.f. vehicle was used for truck load and a series of single-axle vehicles was applied to simulate equivalent lane load. The effect of damping ratio on the impact factor was estimated and then the essential parameters to impact factor, i.e., road surface roughness and vehicle speed were considered. The road surface roughness was randomly generated based on ISO 8608 and it was applied to the truck load only in the vehicle-bridge interaction analysis. The impact factors evaluated from dynamic interaction analysis were also compared with those by the influence line method that is currently used in design practice to estimate impact factor in cable-stayed bridge.

  • The vehicle-mounted radar system (VMRS) including its electronic parts must be designed so that its performance is maintained under varying environmental conditions. The important aspects are typically weight and safety. Since many rotating VMRSs have been developed, discussion about the vibration and shock requirements for the transportation conditions has occurred: in addition, the dynamic unpaved, paved, and off-road effects have been emphasized with respect to lightweight designs. A lightweight-design VMRS should be capable of operating stably under the wind condition with the support of the vehicle structure. In this paper, a structural analysis regarding the support of the VMRS is performed, whereby the real-load conditions for three types of road and pressure were employed in terms of the wind condition. The structural analysis for the safety of the VMRS is performed, and the structural-integrity analytical processes of the VMRS are presented for different load conditions.

  • The OHT(Over Head Transportation) Vehicle transports heavy products quickly and repeatedly at the industrial workplace. The belt in the OHT vehicle is used to support the weight of the OHT Cage. The fatigue of the belt is caused by the dynamic load during the operation time. Since the fatigue fracture of the belt affects the safety at the workplace, the correct prediction of the dynamic load is necessary to calculate the fatigue life of the belt on the design step. In this paper a computer aided analysis method is proposed for the belt in the early design stage using dynamic analysis, stress analysis, belt tensile test, belt fatigue test and fatigue lift prediction method. From the dynamic load time histories and the stress of the belt FE model, a dynamic stress time history is produced. Using linear damage law and cycle counting method, fatigue life cycle is calculated. The method developed in this paper is used to reduce the time and cost for designing the OHT belt in different environment and condition.

  • An efficient aerodynamic thermal load element is developed to reflect the effect of coupled aero-thermo-elastic behaviors in the early design stage of hypersonic vehicle. To this aim, semi-analytic relationships depending on structural deformation are adopted for pressure and thermal load, and the element is formulated based on the relations. The proposed element is implemented in the form of ABAQUS user subroutine, and coupled finite element analysis is carried out to investigate the aero-thermo-elastic behaviors of control surface of hypersonic vehicle. Through the analysis, usefulness of the proposed aerodynamic thermal load element is identified.

  • The flexible multibody dynamic model of an EMS-type Maglev vehicle is necessary in design stage to predict its behavior, load history and levitation performance. Especially in EMS-type Maglev vehicle, the body flexibility of its bogie with electromagnets affects the levitation performance because its feedback control system is more sensitive to vibration of bogie structure. The flexible multibody dynamic model of a 1/2 Maglev vehicle under test is presented. The basic modeling procedure is almost the same as in other applications. However, the feedback control system model unique in EMS-type maglev vehicle must be included in the model. With the model proposed in this study, the dynamic behavior, load history and levitation performance are more precisely predicted. This model could realize the virtual prototyping in EMS-type Maglev vehicle area.

  • Development of supersonic flying vehicle is one of the most latest issue in modern military technology. Specifically, structural integrity of supersonic flying vehicle can be verified by high temperature structural test. High temperature structural test is required to consider thermal load caused by aerodynamic heating while applying structural load simultaneously. Tubular quartz lamps are generally used to generate thermal load by emitting infrared radiation. In this study, modified heat flux model of tubular quartz lamp is proposed based on existing model. Parameters of the proposed model are optimized upon measured heat flux in three dimensions. Finally, thermal load of plate specimen is designed by the heat flux model. In conclusion, it is possible to predict heat flux applied on plate specimen and desired thermal load of high temperature structural test can be obtained.
