A Study on Software Based Fault-Tolerance Techniques for Flight Control Computer (비행조종컴퓨터 소프트웨어 기반 고장허용 설계 기법 연구)

  • Software based fault tolerance techniques are designed to allow a system to tolerate software faults in the system. Fault tolerance techniques are divided into two groups : software based fault tolerance techniques and hardware based fault tolerance techniques. We need a proper design method according to characteristics of the system. In this paper, the concepts of software based fault tolerance techniques for Dual Flight Control Computer are described. For software based fault tolerance design, we classified software failure, designed a way for failure detection and the way of recovery. Eventually the effectiveness of software based fault tolerance techniques was verified through the Software Test Environment(STE).

Dimension-Tolerance Design with Cost Factors (비용요소를 고려한 치수공차설계)

  • In this paper, dimension tolerance design for components is studied. Three cost factors are considered: machining cost, rework cost, and loss related to product quality which is affected by the tolerances of components. We propose a procedure to determine the optimal tolerances of components and a, pp.y the procedure to design the tolerances of fine motion stage in semicoduct machine. We compare the proposed procedure with the existing model for determining tolerance economically.

Development of Application Models Based on the Robust Design (타구치 로버스트 계획에서 응용모형의 개발)

  • This study develops three new models that are practically applicable to three stages of Taguchi's robust design, which includes system design, parameter design and tolerance design. In system design, the Multiple Loss Function Analysis(MLFA) and Overall Loss Index(OLI) which reflect upon weight of characteristics and importance of specification are developed. Moreover parameter design presents Process Capability Index(PCI), $C_{PUK}$ and $C_{PLK}$, in order to segregate Signal-To-Noise Ratio(SNR) into accuracy and precision for an evaluation of relative comparison. In addition, tolerance design presents the new model of allowance computation for assembled product which is primarily derived from safety margin(SM) considering functional limit and specification. The guideline of those three new models, which include systematic charts and applicable illustrations, offers convenience for practitioners in the field. Hence, the practical applications could be made with the steps of robust designs such as system design, parameter design and specification allowance design.

Study of Tolerance Suitability of Door Operation Mechanism on Mobile Air Handing Unit Using 3-DCS Analysis (3-DCS를 이용한 자동차 공기 분배장치의 도아 구동 기구의 공차 적합성 분석에 대한 연구)

  • Recent automakers are trying to be more precise with the dimension check and moving parts to guarantee high quality and satisfy customer requirements. The aim of this paper is to investigate the design tolerance suitability of door operating mechanism linked arms, lever, and cam-shaft in a mobile air handling unit. These parts are complicated because doors, arms, lever and cam-shaft are connected nonlinearly in 3D. The current tolerance analysis method poses problems in design analysis because the moving doors are reasonably suitable for the AHU function. The 3-DCS analysis method provided useful results not only in establishing the inspection criteria for the quality control of products but also in enabling economical production. As a result, the vent door had $1.62^{\circ}{\sim}1.72^{\circ}$ and the defrost door had $0.84^{\circ}{\sim}0.9^{\circ}$ for the directly connected arms operating-type. For the lever connected arm operating-type, the foot door had $2.0^{\circ}{\sim}2.24^{\circ}$ tolerance, while the tolerance values satisfied the air flow volume distribution rate criteria in the AHU. Finally, the results have confirmed the design's tolerance suitability by using 3-DCS analysis at the early design stages. Reliability can be achieved by analyzing accumulated tolerance during the sub-parts assembly process and the moving mechanism linked especially by arms, lever, and cam-shaft.

The Tolerance Stack Analysis of the Model Involving Position Tolerance (위치공차를 포함한 모형의 틈새분석 연구)

  • It is the basic requirement of design process of parts assembly to specify geometric dimensions and tolerances of product characteristics. Among them, tolerance stack analysis is one of the important methods to specify tolerance zone. Tolerance stack analysis is to calculate gap using tolerances which includes geometric and coordinate dimensions. In this study, we suggested more general method called the virtual method to analyze tolerance stack. In virtual method, tolerance zone is formed by combination of dimensional tolerance, geometric tolerance and bonus tolerance. Also tolerance zone is classified by virtual boundary condition and resultant boundary condition. So gap can be defined by combination of virtual boundary and/or resultant boundary. Several examples are used to show the effectiveness of new method comparing to other methods.

  • Since the inception of off-line quality control, it has drawn a particular attention from research community and it has been implemented in a wide variety of industries mainly due to its extensive applicability to numerous real situations. Emphasizing design issues rather than control issues related to manufacturing processes, off-line quality control has been recognized as a cost-effective approach to quality improvement. It mainly consists of three design stages: system design, parameter design, and tolerance design which are implemented in a sequential manner. Utilizing experimental designs and optimization techniques, off-line quality control is aimed at achieving product performance insensitive to external noises by reducing process variability. In spite of its conceptual soundness and practical significance, however, off-line quality control has also been criticized to a great extent due to its heuristic nature of investigation. In addition, it has also been pointed out that the process optimization procedures are inefficient. To enhance the current practice of off-line quality control, this study proposes an integrated optimization model by utilizing a well-established statistical tool, so called response surface methodology (RSM), and a tolerance - cost relationship.

  • Tolerances are defined as the allowable variations in the geometry and positioning of parts in a mechanical assembly for assuring its proper functionality. Tolerance analysis is the activity related to estimating the potential accumulated variation in assemblies. If the estimated variances go out of the specified ranges, it causes the quality problem. Thus, we should adjust the tolerances and this activity is called as tolerance design. In this paper, a case study on the accumulated tolerance analysis and design using Monte Carlo simulation is introduced, which is applied for developing a portable medical device. Using the simulation study, we can improve the assemblability and functionality of the product.

  • Tolerance accumulation has serious effect on the performance of an assembled body. This paper proposes the method which analyzes tolerance accumulation using Monte Carlo Simulation. This method can predict tolerance distribution of fully assembled body using the dimensional tolerance distribution of each part to be assembled. In this analysis, it is assumed that the tolerance of each part has the nominal distribution or uniform distribution. This analysis method is applied to ECV(External Control Valve), and the accumulated tolerance of the fully assembled ECV is obtained from the analysis. The results show that initial tolerance given to each part do not meet the design requirement of ECV. Hence, the tolerances of each part are modified and the additional analysis with the modified tolerances yields the results which satisfy the design requirements of ECV.

  • As more DSP functionalities are integrated into an embedded mobile device, power consumption and device reliability have emerged as crucial issues. As the complexity of mobile embedded designs increases very rapidly, verifying the functionality of the mobile devices has become extremely difficult. Therefore, designs with error (fault) tolerance are often required since these capabilities will enable the design to operate properly even with some existence of errors. However, designs with fault tolerance may suffer from significant power overhead since fault tolerance is often achieved by resource replication. In this paper, we propose a low power and fault tolerant MAC (multiply-and-accumulate) design. The proposed MAC design is based on multiple barrel shifters since MAC designs with barrel-shifters and adders are known to be excellent in terms of power consumption.
