  • This paper is about the bow structure design of the ship-typed and turret moored FPSO which is subjected to the bow-flare slamming load in harsh North Sea environments. Quad 204 FPSO project involves the redevelopment of the existing Schiehallion FPSO which is damaged by impact wave loads. Normally all offshore systems including FPSO are designed to withstand the 100 year storm I.e. the storm that happens once every hundred years at the location where the system is installed. Several incidents have revealed that impact loading is important issue for moored floating production systems. In this paper, the design impact loads are estimated considering the ship owner’s specification, measured data from model tests, requirements of the classification society rules and results of numerical simulation analyses. The impact pressure by numerical analysis is 1.8 times greater than required value by CSR adopted by IACS. Based on the selected design load, plastic design formulae allowing the local material yielding are applied for the initial scantling of the bow structure. To verify the structural integrity, FE analyses are carried out considering the local area subjected to the impact wave loads. Their results such as structural arrangement, design loads and scantlings are shown and discussed. It is found that plastic design formulae in adopting Initial design phase give sufficiently conservative results in terms of structural strength.

  • Stormwater pipe systems are most commonly used to discharge rainwater from the urban catchment covered by the impervious area. To design stormwater pipe and rainwater pumping station, frequency analysis is implemented using historical rainfall and the design rainfall is timely distributed using theoretical shape such as Huff distribution. This method cannot consider the rainfall intensity variation caused by climate change which is type of uncertainty. Therefore, in this study, runoff from Gasan1 stormwater pumping stations catchment is calculated using design rainfall distributed by the 2nd quartile distribution method and the historical rainfall events. From the analysis, the nodal flooding in the urban catchment is likely caused by the high peak rainfall event rather than the large amount of rainfall. The linear regression analysis is implemented. As a result, when several storms have the same amount of rainfall, the nodal flooding in the stormwater pipe systems could be caused by the high peak of storm events. Since as the storm duration become short, the peak rainfall become high, the nodal flooding likely become severe with the short storm duration. The uncertainty in the peak data of design rainfall is analyzed and this uncertainty has to be consider in the stormwater pipe design process.

  • Fillet welding accounts for about 80% of all constructing process of ship and ocean structure. T-joint is one of the typical shapes which are frequently reported to experience the fatigue damage when the marine structure meets the storm loads. The fatigue damage is affected by the magnitude of residual stresses on the weld. Recently, many shipping registers and design guidances have required that the fatigue strength assessment method should be compensated by the effect of the residual stress in case that the random loading or storm loading is applied to the marine vessels. This study suggests the computational procedure to analyze the residual stresses of T-joint specimen that is frequently reported to get damaged by the storm loading. Experiment by XRD as well as the 3-D computational welding model is presented in order to get the profile of residual stress. Throughout the comparison of experimental result with the computational result, the computational model was validated. Thereafter, characteristics of he residual stresses in the joint are discussed.

  • A storage-based VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) system has the disadvantage of degraded performance when IOs for the VDI system are concentrated on the storage. The performance of the VDI system decreases rapidly especially, in case of the boot storm wherein all virtual desktops boot simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a main memory-based virtual desktop system managing virtual desktop images on main memory to solve the performance degradation problem including the boot storm. Performance of the main memory-based VDI system is improved by storing the virtual desktop image on the main memory. Also, the virtual desktop images with large size can be stored in the main memory using deduplication technology. Implementation of the proposed VDI system indicated that it has 4 times performance benefit than the storage-based VDI system in case of the boot storm.

  • Urban storm water collection and conveyance systems are critical components of the urban infrastructures. During a storm event, street grate inlets are usually loaded with debris by the first-flush runoff volume. Grate inlets are subject to clogging effects. Effective interception area of grate inlets was decreased by clogging. It also decreased the interception capacity of grate inlets and increased the inundation area in street. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the clogging characteristics and interception capacity change by clogging for appropriate design and management of grate inlets. In this study, field survey was executed to investigate debris and clogging pattern of grate inlet in 9 areas. The clogging factor with consideration of urban area characteristics was estimated with the field survey results.

  • This study purpose to develop simulation model of optimal design condition of urban storm sewer system considering risk. Urban Storm Sewer Optimal Design Model(USSOD) can compute pipe capacity, pipe slope, crown elevation, excavation depth, risk and return cost in the condition of design discharge. Rational formula is adopted for design discharge and Manning's formula is used for pipe capacity. Discrete differential dynamic programming(DDDP) technique which is a kind of dynamic programming(DP) is used for optimization and first order second moment approximation method and uncertainty analysis is also for developing model. USSOD is applied to hypothetical drainage basin to test and verify, which resulted economical and efficient design in urban drainage sewer system.

  • Extreme sea statistics and combinations of environmental events or response for structures are very important problem in performance evaluation and design of coastal and Offshore structures. A probabilistic method is developed that leads to the combination of Typhoon (Hurricane) or winter storm induces winds, waves, currents and surge for a generic site. The traditional recommendation for the fixed structures is a combination of the 100 years maximum wave height with the 100 years wind and current. (omitted)

  • In South Korea, seasonal, local and temporal climatic characteristics are variable in rainfall patterns. To design or assess the reliability of hydrosystem, information about the rainfall event under consideration is important. In this process, the complete description of a design storm involves the specification of rainfall duration, depth, and its temporal pattern. Generally, to use an appropriate temporal pattern for a design storm is of great importance in the design and evaluation of hydrological safety for hydrosystem. For purpose of selecting of factors affecting the occurrence of rainfall patterns, Huff's dimensionless method was executed and examined by statistical contingency tables analysis through which the inter-dependence of the occurrence frequency of rainfall patterns with respect to geographical location, rainfall duration and depth, and seasonality is investigated. This analysis result can be used to establish flood policies and to design or assess the reliability of hydrosystem.

  • A heavy storm hit the central part of the Korean Peninsula especially on the Chungju Dam Basin from the 9th to 12th of September 1990. The Chungju multipurpose dam is the largest water project in Korea completed in 1986. The storm recorded a peak inflow of about $21,000m^3/sec$ at the dam site which is equivalent to 500 to 1000 years recurring frequency according to the designed concept. Extensive hydrological analyses including field investigation were performed to identify the storm. The result of the field investigation showed that 6 gages among the 22 telemetering rain-gages located in the basin were proved to be out-of-normal operation during the storm. The corrected basin average rainfall was estimated to be 458.6 mm ranging from 206 to 665 mm. The correction of the rainfall depth included the adjustment of the rainfall depths of the 6 gages using the Kriging interpolation technique, and adjustment according to the heights of the gage mouths. For the maintenance and operation of the Chungju Dam, new design floods were suggested from the trend analysis which showed that the design flood have to be increased because of the increasing tendency of the annual flood peaks.
