  • To ensure that the production system of a factory is efficient, the factory layout design should consider the location and material flow plans of facilities, workshops, and storage areas. Highly productive factories need to have an optimized layout planning process, and a customized design methodology of the production system is a necessity for feasible layout planning. This paper presents a method for designing a layout module's size and shape and provides a heuristic location-allocation algorithm for the modules. The method is implemented and validated using a rich internet application-based platform. The layout design method is based on the leisure ship production process; this method can be used for designing the layout of a new factory or remodeling an existing factory and its production system. In contrast to existing layout methods, the inputs required for the proposed method, such as target products, production processes, and human-resource plans, are simple. This layout design method provides a useful solution for the initial stage of factory design.

  • In the RRH (Radio Remote Head) of a WCDMA Node B System, an HPA (High Power Amplifier) is used in order to amplify the transmission RF signal. Upon designing an HPA, the design requirements demand that the intermodulation characteristics are optimized during design and that the stability of the characteristics is maintained in the field. In this DOE (Design of Experiments) research, a few vital factors that affect intermodulation characteristics were first selected; then, an optimal solution was produced for high reliability in a noisy environment in the field by employing the Taguchi Method, a statistical method used for a robust design. Furthermore, by employing HALT(High Accelerated Life Test) during the verification test, this experiment has verified that an HPA that was designed using the Taguchi Method proved to be a far more robust design than an HPA that was designed without using the method.

  • High powered computers and engineering computer systems allow designers to routinely simulate complex physical phenomena. The presented work deals with the analysis of two finite element method optimization techniques (First Order Method-FOM and Subproblem Approximation Method-SAM) implemented in the individual Design Optimization module in the Ansys software to analyze the behavior of real problems. A design optimization is a difficult mathematical process, intended to find the minimum or maximum of an objective function, which is mostly based on iterative procedure. Using optimization techniques in engineering designs requires detailed knowledge of the analyzed problem but also an ability to select the appropriate optimization method. The methods embedded in advanced computer software are based on different optimization techniques and their efficiency is significantly influenced by the specific character of a problem. The efficiency, robustness and accuracy of the methods are studied through strictly convex two-dimensional optimization problem, which is represented by volume minimization of two bars' plane frame structure subjected to maximal vertical displacement limit. Advantages and disadvantages of the methods are described and some practical tips provided which could be beneficial in any efficient engineering design by using an optimization method.

  • The 30-year design flood hydrograph for the Musim Representative Basin, one of the study basins of the International Hydrological Program, is synthesized by the method of unit hydrograph. The theory of unit hydrograph has been well known for a long time. However, the synthesis of flood hydrograph by this method for a basin with insufficient hydrologic data is not an easy task and hence, assumptions and engineering judgement must be exercized. In this paper, the problems often encountered in applying the unit hydrograph method are exposed and solved in detail based on the theory and rational judgement. The probability rainfall for Cheonju Station is transposed to the Musim Basin since it has not been analyzed due to short period of rainfall record. The duration of design rainfall was estimated based on the time of concentration for the watershed. The effective rainfall was determined from the design rainfall using the SCS method which is commonly used for a small basin. The spatial distribution of significant storms was expressed as a dimensionless rainfall mass curve and hence, it was possible to determine the hyetograph of effective design storm. To synthesize the direct runoff hydrograph the 15-min. unit hydrograph was derived by the S-Curve method from the 1-hr unit hydrograph which was obtained from the observed rainfall and runoff data, and then it was applied to the design hyetograph. The exsisting maximum groundwater depletion curve was derived by the base flow seperation. Hence, the design flood hydrograph was obtained by superimposing the groundwater depletion curve to the computed direct runoff hydrograph resulting from the design storm.

  • This paper proposed a new IMC-PID controller design method using the loop shaping method. By the application of the loop shaping method for IMC-PID controller which has only one design parameter and guarantees internal stability, we can not only consider such design specifications as gain margin, phases margin, and sensitivity functions but also obtain the loop gain by setting up the relationships between design specifications and design parameters. A systematic method to select design parameters of IMC-PID controller in order to meet the design specifications is suggested and its effectiveness is examined by the case study and analysis.

  • This study proposes a design method that minimizes a conduction loss of LCC resonant converter under rated condition. Through a simplified analysis of the waveform of the resonant current, the power transfer section and RMS value of the resonant current was analyzed mathematically and graphically. Based on this analysis, the design method that minimizes the RMS value of the resonant current is proposed. To demonstrate this method, this study designed a 7.5 kW (100 V, 75 A) capacitor charger based on LCC resonant converter and the design parameters were chosen according to the process of the design method. Then, the capacitor charger was implemented. An experiment was conducted to measure efficiency while satisfying design specifications under rated conditions. This design method was verified to be effective by achieving 97.7% maximum efficiency and design specifications under rated conditions.

  • This paper is intended to provide the background information and justification for Korean highway bridge design code(limit state design)(2012). Limit state design method calculates reliability index and probability of failure through the analysis of the reliability of the experimental database. It has become possible to perform the economical and consistent design by evaluating the safety of a structure quantitatively. In this paper, we used the design specifications of RC slab bridge of superstructure form of Road Design Manual in Part 5 bridge built in highway bridge. This study conducted structural analysis using the method of frame structure theory, design and analysis of bridge by limit state design method, the design code including various standards and Load model applied Korean highway bridge design code limit state design(KHBDC;2012). As a result, it analyzed the effect of safety through comparison. Showing effect of improvement the safety factor and comparing the value of the result, it is determined to be capable of economical design and safety. Furthermore, limit state design method was able to determine many redundant force of cross-section compared with existing design method. It is determined that it can reduce the overall amount because of the reduction of the cross-section and girder depth.

  • This paper describes the design method of the linear PID controller and proposed the design method in the future. The first PID design method is to ensure phase margin and gain margin. This method guarantees stability by designing in the frequency domain. The second method is an internal model control method. This method is to design the PID controller using the parameters of the internal model after identifying the internal model for the control model. Therefore, this method has a strong disturbance characteristic. Finally, a proposed Cascade and smith-Predictor controller. The combination of the cascade controller and the smith-predator of this method is a controller structure that has two advantages: robust control and optimal control. This method can obtain the performance evaluation index as the optimal controller design method. This PID controller design method becomes the basis of the nonlinear method and is being continuously studied.

  • In this study ship collision risk analysis is performed to determine the design vessel for collision impact analysis of the bridge. Method I in AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications is a semi-deterministic analysis procedure for determining the design vessel. Method ll which is a more complicated probability based analysis procedure is used to select the design vessel for collision impact. The AF allocation by weights seems to be more reasonable than the pylon concentration allocation method because AF allocation by weights takes the design parameter characteristics quantitatively into consideration although the pylon concentration allocation method brings more economical results when the overestimated design collision strength of piers compared to the strength of pylon is moderately modified. Therefore more researches on the allocation model of AF and the selection of design vessel are required.
