  • Base isolation is an innovative design strategy that provides a practical alternative for the seismic design of structures. Base isolators, mainly employed to isolate large structures subjected to earthquake ground excitations and to rehabilitate structures damaged by past earthquakes, deflect and absorb the seismic energy horizontally transmitted to the structures. This study demonstrated that the base isolation system may offer effective performance for bridges during severe seismic events through shaking table tests. Two base isolation systems using laminated rubber bearings with and without hydraulic dampers are tested. The test results strongly show that the laminate rubber bearings cause the natural period of the bridge structure increased considerably, which results in the deck acceleration and the shear forces on the deck acceleratino and the shear forces on the piers reduced significantly. The results also demonstrate that the hydraulic dampers enhance the system's capacity in dissipating energy to reduce the relative displacement between the bridge deck and the pier.

  • The seismic design recommendations of the Jordan Code for Loads and Forces (JC) are evaluated, based on comparisons with analytical studies and the Uniform Building Code. It was established that the overall safety ensured by the implementation of these recommendations is not consistent with the established seismic risk in Jordan and the intended objectives of the code. A new zoning map is proposed with effective peak ground acceleration values. The different period formulae of the code were studied and were found to grossly underestimate the fundamental period when compared with analytically derived values or other codes' formulae. Other factors including the dynamic, soil, importance and behavior factors are discussed. It was determined that the JC's lateral load distribution formulae clearly lead to smaller internal forces than both dynamic analysis and UBC loads, even when those loads are normalized to give the same base shear. The main reason for this is attributed to the limited allowance for a backlash force in the JC.

  • Numerical simulations on the flowfield of lifting chamber for Wing-In-Ground vehicle were performed using Fluent/UNS 4.2 software. The trend of lifting force in lifting chamber and parametric study of geometric and fluid variables were primarily investigated. Selected parameters for investigation are inlet velocity, height between chamber and water level, depth of the skirt, location of inlet, variaton of height at bow and stern. Also, air capturing capabilities from downstream of the propeller were evaluated at the air inlet. The lifting force was increased linearly with the increased of inlet velocity and nonlinearly with the decrease of height force was increased with increased depth. It turned out to have very minor effect on lifting force to change the location of air inlet for lifting chamber, installed on top surface. Tilting the vehicle when it was lifted, the lifting forces, generated in each case, showed no appreciable changes.

  • The paper deals with the design of a new low-friction seal for a pneumatic cylinder with high speed actuation. The seal performance with variation of the cross sections in piston seals with elastomeric material was investigated to minimize the friction forces using ABAQUS. The contact stress and strain distributions and frictional forces of the piston seals were investigated with variation of interference fits, supply pressures and friction coefficients. To develop adequate and productive procedures, the finite element models of the piston seals were created and nonlinear analysis of a seal design was conducted in order to build further knowledge and understanding of the seal's performance characteristics.

  • This paper describes the design of a robot's hand with two fingers for stably grasping an unknown object, and the development of a 3-axis force sensor for which is necessary to constructing the robot's fingers. In order to safely grasp an unknown object using the robot's fingers, they should measure the forces in the gripping and in the gravity directions, and control the measured forces. The 3-axis force sensor should be used for accurately measuring the weight of an unknown object in the gravity direction. Thus, in this paper, the robot's hand with two fingers for stably grasping an unknown object is designed, and the 3-axis force sensor is newly modeled and fabricated using several parallel-plate beams.

  • A tool for the dynamic simulation and design technique of the excavator plays an important role in the prediction of dynamic behavior of the excavator in the initial design stage. In this paper, a flexible multibody dynamic analysis model including track of the crawler type excavator is developed using DADS and ANSYS. Through the driving simulation of the excavator travelling over rough road track, frequency characteristics of the upper frame and cabin are obtained, and the reaction forces acting on the track rollers are also presented for the fatigue life estimation. The effect of boom vibration modes on the joint reaction forces and accelerations is presented from the swing simulation.

  • A novel set of experimental test tooling for measuring pulling and holding forces for drawbeads on binders inclined at a wide range of angles is introduced. A mechanical design featuring a single load cell, a male-female draw bead set, translation and rotation degrees of freedom, and a screw-driven clamping system has been incorporated into a standard tensile test machine. On a real time basis, restraining and holding force data with respect to draw-in displacement may be directly downloaded into a PC for data processing. The proposed experimental system represents a significant breakthrough in drawbead simulation technology due to its relatively low cost, clever design, and versatility. The system is shown to yield excellent experimental data suitable for verifying theory and numerical model predictions.

  • A model test was carried out, in order to verify the hydrodynamic performances of public 30 feet class sailing yacht. In the initial design stage, the performances and the running attitude of sail yacht including the hull form and sail plan, appendages were estimated by VPP, from which made the representative test conditions. A new experiment system such as captive model device was composed because the running attitude could be changed by wind conditions. The test results show that the minimum resistance is generated in the heeling 20 degree, which was expected in the initial design stage. It is thought to be the useful informations that the keel has au effects on hydrodynamic forces and resistance differences between the upwind and the downwind condition.

  • The excitation forces from the periodical firing pressure in cylinder and the rotating crank mechanism cause lots of vibration problems in diesel engines. In this Paper. the computational program for predicting the excitation force is developed and applied to 4-stroke In-line engines. The crank angle is also optimized to reduce the first and second order moment produced by engines. Compared to the conventional uniform crank angle, about 70 % of the first order horizontal and vertical moment can be reduced by re-designing the crank angle non-uniformly.

  • Cutting forces in ball-end milling of slanted surfaces are calculated. The cutting area is determined from the Z-map of the surface geometry and current cutter location. The obtained cutting area is projected onto the cutter plane normal to the Z-axis and compared with cutting edge element location. Cutting force is calculated by integration of elemental cutting forces of engaged cutting edge elements. Experiments with various slanted angles were performed to verify the proposed cutting force estimation model. It is shown that the proposed method predicts cutting force effectively for any geometry including sculptured surfaces with cusp marks and surfaces with pockets and holes.
