Detection of Earnings Management as a Measure of Income Smoothing on Fluctuations in Exchange Rates: Managerial Implications for Korean Exporters

  • Purpose - Foreign Exchange Rates (FER) have been one of the most significant factors for both Korean exporters and the economy of Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether exporters with a high level of Exchange Rate Elasticity of Sales (ERES) make the use of earnings management for Income Smoothing (IS). Design/methodology - Income smoothing was obtained using the methodology suggested by Leuz, Nanda and Wysocki (2003). Accruals-based Earnings Management (AEM) was estimated using Discretionary Accruals (DA) calculated by the operant Jones Model developed by Dechow, Sloan and Sweeney (1995). Real Earnings Management (REM) was obtained using the methodologies suggested by Roychowdhury (2006) and Cohen and Zarowin (2010). Data were 2,402 firm years of public listed companies on the KRX, which were not in the financial industry and had a settlement of accounts in December for the period from 2013 to 2017. Findings - Results of the evaluation are as follows. First, companies with higher levels of ERES have relatively lower levels of smoothing of reported income. This might be because a fluctuation in sales caused by an exchange rate fluctuation has a direct impact on the volatility of the reported income. Second, companies with high levels of both ERES and IS have a positive correlation with both AEM and REM. This might be because companies with high levels of IS engage in earnings management to smooth reported income. Specifically, it is possible to assume that for smoothing the reported income, not only AEM but also REM is practiced. Third, companies with high levels of ERES but low levels of IS have a negative correlation with both AEM and REM. This could be interpreted as companies exhibiting low levels of IS due to higher levels of ERES tend to control IS. In addition, such results were supported by firms relying highly on exporting, and are consequently sensitive to exchange rate fluctuation. Therefore, it may conclude that companies with high levels of ERES make the use of earnings management as a means of IS. Originality/value - This study can find its significance from the fact that it is the first study, empirically verifying that companies of Korea, where exportation is a large part, use both AEM and REM as a means for smoothing reported income upon facing exchange rate fluctuations. In addition, it is highly expected that the results of this study could be useful for participants of financial markets when making IS-related decisions.

A Comparative Study on Requirements for the Buyer's Right to Withhold Performance for the Seller's Actual Non-Performance under the CISG and the CESL

  • Purpose - The buyer's right to withhold performance is a useful and important self-help remedy to protect himself from the seller's breach of contract, and it is also the coercive means to induce the seller to perform his part of contract. However, the buyer's exercise of such a right often exposes himself to the risk of breaching the contract. This is generally due to his ignorance when he is entitled to the right and also uncertainties inherent in the law. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine what the requirements should be fulfilled before the buyer exercises the right for the seller's actual breach of contract. Design/methodology - In order to achieve the purposes of the study, it executes a comparative study of the rules as to the requirements for the buyer's right to withhold performance for the seller's actual non-performance under the CISG and the CESL. It mainly focuses on performance due, the seller's non-performance, the buyer's readiness to perform and the requirement of notice. Findings - The main findings of this comparative study can be summarized as follows: Although the CISG has no expressive provision for the buyer's general right to withhold performance for the seller's actual non-performance, it may be inferred from the general principles the CISG underlies, synallagmatic nature of the contract. In addition, it can be drawn by analogy from relevant provisions of the CISG. On the other hand, the CESL expressively provides that the buyer has a general right to withhold performance where the seller fails to tender performance or perform the contract. Therefore, it seems that the position of CESL is rather easier and more apparent to allow the buyer to withhold performance for the seller's non-performance. Originality/value - Most of the existing studies on the right to withhold performance under the CISG have centered on the right to withhold performance for an anticipatory breach of contract. On the other hand, there have been few prior studies on the right to withhold performance for the actual nonperformance during a contractual period of performance. Therefore, this paper examined the requirements for the buyer's right to withhold performance under the CISG and the CESL in a comparative way for the seller's actual breach of obligation. In this conclusion, it may provide practical and legal considerations and implications for business people who are not certain about the right to withhold performance.

Compliance of Electronic Bill of Lading Regulation in Korea with Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records

  • Purpose - The UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (Model Law) is based on the principles of non-discrimination against the use of electronic means, functional equivalence, and technology neutrality underpinning all UNCITRAL texts on electronic commerce. Investigating the disagreements between the Model Law and the Koran Commercial Act (KC Act), including the B/L Regulation, and suggesting the revision of the KC Act including the B/L Regulation, could be a valuable study. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the harmonization of Korean legislation regarding electronic bill of lading in compliance with the Model Law. Design/methodology - The Model Law is flexible to accommodate the use of all technologies and models, such as registries, tokens, and distributed ledgers: that is, blockchain. In 2007, the KC Act was revised to regulate electronic bills of lading to promote the widespread legal use of electronic bills of lading. In addition, The Regulation on Implementation of the Provisions of the Commercial Act Regarding Electronic Bills of Lading (the B/L Regulation) was enacted to regulate the detailed procedures in using electronic bills of lading in 2008. This paper employs a legal analysis by which this paper does find differences between two rules in light of technology neutrality and global standard of electronic bills of lading model. Findings - The main findings are as follows: i) the Korean registry agency has characteristics of a closed system. ii) The KC Act has no provision regarding control. iii) The KC Act discriminates other electronic bills of lading on the ground that it was issued or used abroad. Moreover, this study does comprehensive analysis of Korean Acts in comparison with the Model Law and, in particular, this study analyzes the differences between the KC Act and the Model Law by comparing article by article in view of the harmonization of the two rules. Originality/value - The subject of previous several studies was draft provisions on Electronic Transferable Records before completion of the Model Law; thus, these studies did not take into consideration the character of the Model Law as the Model Law was chosen at the final stage of legislation. This study is aimed at the final version of the Model Law. So, this study is meaningful by finding the suggestion and directions for the Korean government to revise the KC Act and the B/L Regulation in line with the Model Law.

An Empirical Study on the Characteristic Influences of the Rules of Origin on the Implementation of Preferential Tariffs and Trade Performance

  • Purpose - This study categorizes factors that influence the utilization of preferential tariffs based on the characteristics of rules of origin (RoO) and identifies and analyzes the influence of these characteristics on the utilization of preferential tariffs and the trade performance of companies. Design/methodology - In this study, we categorized factors that have an influence on the utilization of preferential tariffs based on the characteristics of RoO and investigated and tested the influence of these characteristics on the utilization of preferential tariffs and the trade performance of companies. For empirical analysis, we categorized the characteristics of RoO into restrictiveness, complexity, and uncertainty. We then developed a research model and formulated hypotheses based on previous studies, and tested the hypotheses using statistical software-(SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 18.0.) Findings - Previous studies suggested that each characteristic of RoO is determined by unique features of a Regional Trade Agreement (RTA). This study conducted an empirical analysis on the influence of the characteristics of RoO on the utilization of preferential tariffs and trade performance. The results confirmed that, overall, the characteristics of preferential rules of origin (PRoO) are related to and influence Korean companies' utilization of preferential tariffs and trade performance. As for the degree of the influence, the characteristics were in the order of uncertainty> restrictiveness> complexity. Nevertheless, complexity turned out not to have an influence large enough to change a company's decision on the utilization of preferential tariffs. Based on these results, this study identified unique features of PRoO and related problems for Korean companies that want to utilize preferential tariffs and suggested countermeasures for their effective utilization of preferential tariffs in the future. Originality/value - Companies that want to use preferential tariffs in international trade have to satisfy PRoO. The issue of origin can be regarded as an essential part of an RTA and RoO, are a crucial criterion in using preferential tariffs. The rules are requirements to claim benefits of preferential trade agreements and are the primary reasons companies have trouble in utilizing preferential tariffs. In this sense, this study categorized the characteristics of RoO, which are a key part of an RTA, and surveyed working-level professionals in charge of international trade at Korean companies to investigate the relationship between these characteristics and the utilizations of preferential tariffs and trade performance of the companies.

A Study on Network Construction Strategies for Long-Haul Low-Cost Carrier Operations

  • Purpose - This study aims to analyze the characteristics of network construction by Norwegian Air and AirAsia X, which are recognized as leading airlines in the long-haul LCC market. Based on this analysis, this study intends to provide implications for networking strategies for Korean LCCs that seek to enter the long-haul market when the aviation market stabilizes again upon the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology - To conduct the network analysis on long-haul low-cost airlines, the Official Airline Guide (OAG) Schedule Analyzer was used to extract long-haul data of Norwegian Air and AirAsia X. To analyze the trend of the long-haul route network, we obtained the data from 3 separate years between 2011 and 2019. The network was analyzed using UCINET 6.0 in order to examine the network structure of long-haul low-cost airlines and the growth trend of each stage. Findings - Analyzing the network of long-haul routes by visualizing the network structure of low-cost carriers showed the following results. In its early years, Norwegian Air's long-haul route network, centering on regional airports in Spain and Sweden, connected European regions, the Middle East, and Africa. As time passed, however, the network expanded and became steadily strong as the airline connected airports in other European countries to North America and Asia. In addition, in 2011, AirAsia X showed links to parts of Europe, such as London and Paris, the Middle East and India, and Australia and Northeast Asia, centering on the Kuala Lumpur Airport. Although the routes in Europe were suspended, the network continued to expand while concentrating on routes of less than approximately 7,000 km. It was found that instead of giving up on ultra-long-haul routes such as Europe, the network was further expanded in Northeast Asia, such as the routes in Korea and Japan centering on China. Originality/value - Until the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, Norwegian Air actively expanded long-haul routes, resulting in the number of long-haul routes quintupling since 2011. The unfortunate circumstance, wherein the world aviation market was rendered stagnant due to the outbreak of COVID-19, hit Norwegian Air harder than any other low-cost carriers. However, in the case of AirAsia X, it was found that it did not suffer as much damage as Norwegian Air because it initially withdrew from unprofitable routes over 7,000 km and grew by gradually increasing profitable destinations over shorter distances. When the COVID-19 pandemic ends and the aviation market stabilizes, low-cost carriers around the world, including Korea, that enter the long-haul route market will need to employ strategies to analyze the marketability of potential routes and to launch the routes that yield the highest profits without being bound by distance. For stable growth, it is necessary to take a conservative stance; first, by reviewing the business feasibility of the operating a small number of highly profitable routes, and second, by gradually expanding these routes.

그래픽 콘텐츠 고려 정도에 따른 콘텐츠 특성, 소비자 행동, 경제적 가치에 관한 연구 (A Study on Content Characteristics, Consumer Behavior and Economic Value According to the Degree of Consideration of Graphic Content)

  • 본 연구는 스크린 골프에서 그래픽 콘텐츠가 제공하는 이미지 느낌, 표현 방법, 이미지 색상의 고려 정도에 따라 소비자가 경험하는 스크린 골프의 콘텐츠 특성, 재이용 의도, 고객 만족, 경제적 가치에 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 검증하였다. 또한 스크린 골프의 콘텐츠 특성이 경제적 가치에 어떠한 영향 관계가 있고, 이러한 과정에서 재이용 의도와 고객 만족이 어떠한 영향이 있는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 2021년 9월 1일부터 9월 30일까지 스크린 골프장을 이용하는 소비자를 대상으로 225부의 설문조사를 실시하였다. 자료 처리는 빈도분석, 요인분석, 신뢰도분석, 군집분석, 카이제곱분석, 3단계 매개회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 선호하는 이미지 느낌은 깔끔하고 세련된 느낌이 높게 나타났고, 선호하는 표현 방법은 사실적 이미지가 높게 나타났으며, 선호하는 이미지 색상은 초록 계열 색상이 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 그래픽 콘텐츠 고려 정도에 따라 경쟁성, 이용 용이성, 유대감, 현실감에서 차이가 나타났고, 소비자의 재이용 의도, 고객 만족, 경제적 가치에서 차이가 나타났다. 셋째, 스크린 골프 콘텐츠 특성과 경제적 가치의 관계에서 고객 만족과 재이용 의도는 매개효과가 나타났다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 스크린 골프의 그래픽 디자인 모형을 도출할 수 있는 기초자료를 제공함으로써 운영 주체의 경제적 효익이 향상될 수 있는 방안을 제시하였고, 스크린 골프 산업이 성장하는데 기여하고자 하였다.

K-Pop 비주얼디렉팅 전략에 관한 SM 사례연구 (Case Study of SM Entertainment on the K-Pop Visual Directing Strategy)

  • 본 연구는 SM 엔터테인먼트의 사례를 통해 비주얼디렉팅의 프로세스와 영역 확장에 대해 살펴보고 비주얼디렉터의 역할과 역량에 대해 알아보기 위한 것이다. 사례분석 결과 SM은 크리에이티브 본부내에 아트디렉터와 시각디자이너들로 구성된 비주얼 디렉팅팀을 만들어 비주얼디렉팅을 아이돌 개발 및 인기 지속을 위해 적극적으로 도입하고 있었다. 스타마케팅의 일환으로 전개되고 있는 비주얼디렉팅의 프로세스로는, 마케팅 전략상의 환경분석, 아이돌과 관련된 마케팅 전략 수립, 아티스트별 타겟 이미지 설정, 비주얼 디렉팅 프로젝트 기획 플랜 및 제작 관리를 하는 것으로 나타났다. 비주얼디렉터는 논리력을 바탕으로 창의적 감각, 논리적 설득, 정보 분석력, 시각적 표현력, 현장 적용력 등의 역량을 요구하고 있었다. SM은 아이돌 가수들의 비주얼디렉팅에 그치지 않고 MD 상품 디자인과 제작, 상품구성과 디자이너 콜라보레이션(협업), SM타운 코엑스아티움 등 SM의 사업영역을 확장하는 곳마다 아이돌 가수에서부터 축적된 비주얼 디렉팅을 적용하고 있었다. 본 논문은 현재 음악산업의 K-Pop 아이돌 제작 시스템 안에서 활발하게 나름의 영역을 만들고 독창적인 세계를 구축해나가고 있는 비주얼 디렉팅을 학문적 영역으로 끌어올렸다는 데 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

  • 기업의 창업가들과 경영자들은 글로벌 대기업들에 의해 지배되고 있는 산업들에서 성공하기 위해 필요한 규모 및 능력을 달성하기 위해서 협력업체들과의 확장된 네트워크를 잘 이용할 줄 알아야 한다는 사실을 목격하게 된다. 기업의 경영자들은 간소하지만 민첩한 기업을 만들고자 한다면, 그들은 어떻게 기업의 조직구조 모델이 운영효율성, 유연성에 영향을 미치게 되는지, 그리고 어떻게 기업 조직을 기업환경과 전략(기회와 위협을 감지하고 대응할 수 있는)에 맞게 조정해야 하는지를 이해해야 한다. 본 연구는 요즘처럼 빠르게 변하고 불확실한 기업 환경에서 생존하고 번창할 수 있는 기업을 만들기 위해 필요한 역량들을 검토한다. 본 논문에 제시된 것 들은 빠르게 변하는 글로벌 경제의 수요에 대처하려 했던 수백 명의 경영자들과 기업창업자들의 지난 20년 동안의 노력의 결과들이다[1]. 본 연구의 결과는 정보기술(IT)이 기업의 성공을 위해 필요한 역량 및 조직구조를 개발하는데 있어서 필요한 가이드라인을 제공한다. 본 연구는 계량적인 연구 모델을 제시하지 못하는 한계점을 가지고 있으나, 최근의 정보기술 환경에서 기업들이 조직의 구조를 설계하는데 있어 고려해야할 점들과 지침을 제공하는 것이 연구의 목적이다.

홍만병초 분획물에 의한 HT-29대장암 세포의 Wnt/β-catenin 신호전달 조절 (Regulation of Wnt/β-catenin Signal Transduction in HT-29 Colon Cancer Cells by a Rhododendron brachycarpum Fraction)

  • 본 연구에서는 Rhododendron brachycarpum (RB, 홍만병초)의 80% 메탄올 추출물 및 분획물의 항암 활성을 규명하고자 하였다. RB n-hexane 분획물은 HT-29 세포에서 가장 높은 활성 저해를 보였다($IC_{50}=20.2{\pm}1.2{\mu}g/ml$). 더욱이, 콜로니와 구형 형성은 수와 크기는 유의적으로 감소시켰다. RB의 n-hexane 분획물에서($0.22{\pm}0.02$ fold change) TOP / FOP 플래시 리포터 억제 활성은 추출물 및 다른 분획물 보다 낮게 나타났다. n-hexane 및 ethyl acetate 분획물은 세포 내 ${\beta}-catenin$의 발현을 조절하였다. 2 차 대사 산물이 ${\beta}-catenin$ 분해를 감소시킬 수 있는지 여부를 조사하기 위해 Western blot을 실시한 결과 n-hexane 분획물에서 $p-GSK3{\beta}$를 조절하였으며, 세포내 ${\beta}-catenin$은 핵에서 정량적인 변화를 가져왔다. 이러한 결과는 RB의 n-hexane 분획물로부터 천연 항암 물질을 포함하고 있음을 보여줍니다.

밀레니얼 세대의 모바일 상품권 수용태도에 관한 연구 - 확장된 통합기술수용모형을 중심으로 - (Consumer Acceptance of Mobile Gift Certificates - Focused on UTAUT2 -)

  • 스마트기기의 발달과 보급에 따라 모바일 쇼핑의 비중은 점차 증가하고 있으며 그 중에서 모바일 상품권의 시장도 점차 커져가고 있다. 본 연구는 모바일 상품권의 주요 고객인 대학생들을 대상으로 모바일 상품권의 이용 현황과 수용 태도를 살펴본다. 또한 확장된 통합기술수용모형(UTAUT2)을 기반으로 대학생들의 모바일 상품권 수용과 추천의도의 관계에서 사용의도의 매개효과에 대한 분석결과를 제시하였다. 분석결과 연구모형의 독립변수 중에서 노력기대, 쾌락적동기, 가격효용성, 습관은 모바일 상품권 사용의도에 유의한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 모바일 상품권 사용의도는 노력기대, 쾌락적동기, 가격효용성과 추천의도의 관계에서 매개효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 모바일 상품권 사업자 또는 향후 진입 예정자들에게 고객들의 기술수용 태도를 설명하는 동시에 모바일 상품권을 통한 신규 고객 모집 등의 전략적 마케팅에 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
