  • Posterior ankle impingement syndrome is one of the impingement syndromes characterized by posterior ankle pain that occurs during forced plantar flexion. This report presents a case of a 48-year-old PAIS patient with os trigonum syndrome accompanied by tenosynovitis of flexor hallucis longus. She was treated with complex Korean medicine to a good effect. The Numeric Rating Scale and the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level were used to measure the impact of Korean medicine on the patient's pain and quality of life. Decreased NRS and increased EQ-5D-5L scores reflected improvement in her symptoms within 25 days. This study suggests complex Korean medicine treatment for PAIS may be beneficial for alleviating pain and improving quality of life.

  • Objectives Post-herpetic neuralgia(PHN) is one of the common complications in patients diagnosed with herpes zoster. The purpose of this case study is to suggest the effect of Galgunhaegui-tang and korean medicine treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia patient. Methods A 62-year-old Herpes Zoster patient suffered from rash with post-herpectic neuralgia was identified as Taeeumin Gansuyolriyolbyong. The patient's chief complaint was assessed by counting the number of oral analgesics taken and using Visual Analog Scale(VAS) score. The patient was treated with Galgunhaegui-tang and Korean medicine treatment. Results After 9 days of admission treatment including Galgunhaegui-tang, VAS of PHN was decreased from 7.5 to 4 and the number of taking oral analgesic was decreased from 2 to 1. Conclusions This case study indicates that Galgunhaegui-tang and Korean medicine treatment may improve the pain of PHN.

  • Three cases of simple exanthematous eruption were suspected during Sumsu (Bufonis Venenum) pharmacopuncture (SP) topical anesthesia for acupotomy. Patients had skin rash with pruritus on both ankle, posterior neck, and left shoulder after 11, 12, and 7 times of SP treatment, respectively. There were no cases of systemic manifestations or changes in vital signs. As a result of using the World Health Organization-Uppsala Monitoring Centre (WHO-UMC) causality assessment, all the cases were evaluated as 'unlikely'. However, the results of using the Korean algorithm for assessing the causality of drug adverse reactions version 2.0 were evaluated as 'possible'. This report is the first case report on adverse events suspected of occurring after SP treatment. Although the causal relationship between suspected intervention and the adverse event is not clear, there was a difficulty in completely excluding the possibility. Additional safety studies will be required to make SP more widely available.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement in a patient with edema treated by herb medication based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to 'A disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions (DPIDS)', a patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, no. 46 provision and was administered with Mahwang-tang herbal medication for 30 days. The Numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to estimate the response. Results : The NRS score changed from 10 to 1 and the edema disappeared by 46th provision of Mahwang-tang selected according to Shanghanlun provisions. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the two words in the 46th provision of Shanghanlun, '陽氣重, 無汗' (Yang qi heavy, Absence of sweating) indicate a close relationship between photosensitivity and absence of sweating, thereby affecting edema in this case.

Methods : According to a disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, a patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, 40th provision and was administered Socheongryong-tang herbal medication for 45 days. The numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to estimate the response. Results : The NRS score changed from 10 to 0 and the tinnitus disappeared by 40th provision of Socheongryong-tang selected according to Shanghanlun provisions. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the two words in the 40th provision of Shanghanlun, '表不解, 水氣'(exterior do not release, water qi) indicate a close relationship between economic difficulty and stuffiness of being in water, which affect tinnitus in this case.

  • Objective : In order to establish the scientific research methods to prove the effects of korean traditional medicine about ultraviolet induced skin damage, we investigated the research on ultraviolet induced skin damage in the korean traditional medicine field. Method : We searched the papers about ultraviolet induced skin damage published in the journals of korean traditional medicine. The searching end date was on June 29, 2015. Results : Thirty papers about ultraviolet induced skin damage were found. Twenty nine papers were experimental research, and one paper was clinical research. Sixty-three percent of papers were written the years after 2011. Fifty-seven percent of papers were published in the korean journal of oriental physiology & pathology and the journal of korean oriental medical ophthalmology & otolaryngology & dermatology. Main outcome measures of experimental research were anti-wrinkle effects, anti-oxidant capacity, anti-apoptosis effects, whitening effects and anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusion : We need more systematic research in order to prove the effects of korean traditional medicine, and use extensively.

  • Netherton's syndrome is an unusual disorder which consists of triad of ichtyosiform dermatosis, multiple defects of hair shaft and an atopic diathesis. The finding of bamboo hair is pathognomic in Netherton's syndrome and the ichthyosiform dermatosis may consist of either ichtyosis linearis circumflexa or congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma. Often, variability in the clinical features leads to a delay in diagnosis in many cases. We report a case of Netherton's syndrome diagnosed in the neonatal period. The patient presented with severe ichthyosis and confirmed microscopically distinctive bamboo hair.
