  • The purpose of this study was to assess the adhesion of resilient denture liners (such as, heat-cured silicone molloplast B,cold- cured silicone Mollosil) to polymethyl metacrylate (K-33) and metal (Megalloy) in the laboratory by peel test. The resilient denture lines were processed according to manufactures instruction, onto prepared specimens(original resin base plate, rough resin base plate, stippled metal plate, mesh metal plate ) 75mm long and 25m wide. And then, the peel test was performed by instron. The results were as follows : 1. The bonding strength of Mollosil was stronger than that of Molloplast B except the specimen of stippled metal plate. 2. The tensile strength of Mollosil was weaker than that of Molloplast Bas tearing of Mollosil was occured in the peel test. 3. Mesh metal plate had the highest bonding strength in the case of Molloplast B and Mollosil. But stippled metal plate have high bonding strength in the case of Molloplast B and have the lowest bonding strength in the case of Mollosil. 4. The bonding strength of rough resin base plate was stronger than that of original resin base plate in the case of Molloplast B and Mollosil. 5. The bonding strength of metal plates was stronger than that of resin base plates in the case of Molloplast B and Mollosil except the case of bonding strength between the stippled metal plate and Mollosil. 6. It seems that the Increase of surface and retention form of metal plate and resin base plate produces higher physical bonding strength.

  • Autopolymerising and visible light cured resin are used to reline dentures. But relined surface are easily contaminated by water or saliva in the mouth during clinical procedure. This study was to find out the effect of surface contamination on the transverse strength of the relined denture base. To accomplish this, the specimens of $65\times10\times3mm$ were made with heat-cured(Lucitone 199), visible light-cured(Triad), and autopolymerizing resin(Kooliner). Measurements of transverse strength were taken for each specimen. Specimens made of heat-cured resins, sizing $65\times10\times1.5mm$, were relined with heat-cured, light-cured, and autopolymerizing resin, respectively. Specimens relined with autopolymerizing and light-cured resins were further classified into not-contaminated, water-contaminated and saliva-contaminated groups. Again, measurements of the transverse strength were taken for each group. The results were as follows 1. The transverse strength of heat-cured resin was superior to all the other resins. 2. The transverse strength of each specimen decreased after relining in the following order, heat-cured, visible light-cured, and autopolymerizing resin. 3. Surface contamination produced an decrease in transverse strength, especially in the saliva contaminated group. According to these results, water or saliva contamination should be avoided during intraoral relining procedures.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Poor wettability of denture relining materials may lead to retention problems and patient discomfort. PURPOSE. Purpose of this study is to compare and evaluate wettability of nine denture relining materials using contact angle measurements under air and water storage over time. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Nine denture relining materials were investigated in this study. Two heat-curing polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA) denture base materials: Vertex RS, Lang, one self-curing polyethyl-methacrylate(PEMA) chairside reline resin: Rebase II, six silicone relining materials: Mucopren soft, Mucosoft, $Mollosil^{{R}}$ plus, Sofreliner Touch, GC $Reline^{TM}$ Ultrasoft, Silagum automix comfort were used in this experiment. Contact angles were measured using high-resolution drop shape analysis system(DSA 10-MK2, KRUESS, Germany) under three conditions(in air after setting, 1 hour water storage, and 24 hours water storage). Nine materials were classified into three groups according to material composition(Group 1: PMMA, Group 2: PEMA, Group 3: Silicone). Mean values of contact angles were compared using independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA, followed by a Scheffe's post hoc analysis($\alpha$=0.01). RESULTS. Contact angles of materials tested after air and water storage increased in the following order: Group 1(PMMA), Group 2(PEMA), Group 3(Silicone). Heat-cured acrylic denture base resins had more wettability than silicone relining materials. Lang had the highest wettability after 24 hours of water storage. Silicone relining materials had lower wettability due to their hydrophobicity. Wettability of all denture relining materials, except Rebase II and $Mollosil^{{R}}$ plus, increased after 24 hours of water storage. CONCLUSIONS. Conventional heat-cured resin showed the highest wettability, therefore, it can be suggested that heat-cured acrylic resin is material of choice for denture relining materials.
