  • This study was performed to investigate anti-microbial activity of soybean extract against oral microbes, and to determine the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) for microbes causing oral diseases. The soybean extract was prepared using ethyl acetate and it was treated with 16 types of oral microbes at a concentration of 5.00 mg/ml (0.5%). The MIC of soybean extract for three major microbes causing oral diseases was determined. The anti-microbial activity and MIC were measured using broth dilution method. Significant reduction of microbial activities of 9 types oral microbes when the soybean extract was added to the broth compared to the control (p<0.01). The extract showed higher anti-microbial activity against some anaerobic strains (P. gingivalis and P. intermieia). S. mutans, which causes dental caries, showed MIC at a concentration of 40 mg/ml for the soybean extract. P. gingivalis, which causes adult periodontal disease, showed MIC at a concentration of 20 mg/ml for the extract. C. albicans, which causes denture stomatitis and angular stomatitis, showed MIC at a concentration of 20 mg/ml for the extract. These results indicate that soybean extract showed anti-microbial effort against 9 types of oral microbes, and the anti-microbial effect of the extract against oral microbes was stronger against fungi than against bacteria. The anti-microbial mechanism of soybean extract against oral microbes should be investigated, and more research for clinical application is required at a level of actual intake.

  • Glial cells, including astrocytes and microglia, interact closely with neurons and modulate pain transmission, particularly under pathological conditions. In this study, we examined the excitability of substantia gelatinosa (SG) neurons of the spinal dorsal horn using a patch clamp recording to investigate the roles of microglial activation in the nociceptive processes of rats. We used xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO), a generator of superoxide anion (O2·-), to induce a pathological pain condition. X/XO treatment induced an inward current and membrane depolarization. The inward current was significantly inhibited by minocycline, a microglial inhibitor, and fluorocitrate, an astrocyte inhibitor. To examine whether toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in microglia was involved in the inward current, we used lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a highly specific TLR4 agonist. The LPS induced inward current, which was decreased by pretreatment with Tak-242, a TLR4-specific inhibitor, and phenyl N-t-butylnitrone, a reactive oxygen species scavenger. The X/XO-induced inward current was also inhibited by pretreatment with Tak-242. These results indicate that the X/XO-induced inward current of SG neurons occurs through activation of TLR4 in microglial cells, suggesting that neuroglial cells modulate the nociceptive process through central sensitization.

  • The elimination of endodontic biofilms and the maintenance of a leak-proof canal filling are key aspects of successful root canal treatment. Several materials have been introduced to treat endodontic disease, although treatment success is limited by the features of the biomaterials used. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been increasingly considered in dental applications, especially endodontics, due to their high antimicrobial activity. For the present study, an electronic search was conducted using MEDLINE (PubMed), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Google Scholar, and EMBASE. This review provides insights into the unique characteristics of AgNPs, including their chemical, physical, and antimicrobial properties; limitations; and potential uses. Various studies involving different application methods of AgNPs were carefully examined. Based on previous clinical studies, the synthesis, means of obtaining, usage conditions, and potential cytotoxicity of AgNPs were evaluated. The findings indicate that AgNPs are effective antimicrobial agents for the elimination of endodontic biofilms.

  • This study obtained DMFT index(9271 people) in population with more than 6 years old based on data of 2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and calculated SiC index(2,517 people) by classifying group with high risk, which is 1/3 in high rank out of it. The aim was to confirm existence of the group with high risk of dental caries, and was to emphasize necessity of preventive strategy for the group with high risk. Statistical analysis was carried out t-test by using STATA 11.0 program. 1. DMFT index accounted for 45.0%(4,174 people) for men and 55.0%(5,097 people) for women. SiC index stood at 2,517 people. Men accounted for 36.3%(914 people). Thus, women were larger with 64.7%(1,603 people). 2. Seeing the mean in DMFT index and SiC index, the more rise in age led to the bigger difference in the mean between two groups. Especially, the difference was shown more than 4 points on the average for 13 and 14 years old and more than double on the average from over 15 years. 3. As a result of comparing gender, DMFT index was higher in women than men from over 14 years old. SiC index wasn't significant. However, women were indicated to be 1 piece more than men at the age of 9 and 14. 4. As a result of comparing by region, both DMFT index and SiC index were indicated to be higher in the rural area for their over 60s. Seeing the above results, the group with high risk is showing the higher rate of experiencing dental caries than DMFT-index in the whole. Thus, the comprehensively & intensively preventive management seems to be likely needed on group with high risk.

  • Ursolic acid is a triterpenoid compound present in many plants. This study examined the antimicrobial activity of ursolic acid against mutans streptococci (MS) isolated from the Korean population. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and time kill curves of MS. The cytotoxicity of ursolic acid against KB cells was tested using an MTT assay. The $MIC_{90}$ values of ursolic acid for Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus isolated from the Korean population were $2 {\mu}g$/ml and $4 {\mu}g$/ml, respectively. Ursolic acid had a bactericidal effect on S. mutans ATCC $25175^T$ and S. sobrinus ATCC $33478^T$ at > $2 \;{\times}\; MIC (4 {\mu}g$/ml) and $4 \;{\times}\; MIC (8 {\mu}g$/ml), respectively. Ursolic acid had no cytotoxic effect on KB cells at concentrations at which it exerted antimicrobial effects. The results suggest that ursolic acid can be used in the development of oral hygiene products for the prevention of dental caries.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this article is to clearly describe research trends on health life expectancy using oral health indicators that have been published from 2010 to 2020 then suggest the direction of future research. Methods: Online academic databases in English (PubMed, Web of Science and Embase) were used to find those articles by applying a variety of keywords, including terms (adjusted life year, adjusted life expectancy, dental and oral). We identified relevant articles based on the following classification method of Mathers: (1) health gaps, (2) health expectancies. Results: Among 1,728 articles from the online databases, the final 13 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. Health life expectancy studies indicate that research growth was recently achieved overseas. Among the literature collected in this study, 10 studies using health gap indicators yielded seven Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY), and three calculated Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY), which differed in the nature of the survey data used in the study measuring DALY and QALY. There are only three health expectancies and the number of papers were smaller than the health gap study. Conclusion: Establishing a foundation to calculate health life expectancy indicators through the development and improvement of oral health level are needed. More studies in the area of health life expectancy estimation research is based on actual prevalence and oral health-related quality of life are also needed.

  • This study was to develop an instrument for multidimensional measurement of Korean scaling fear (KSF)-1.0 and analyze related factors. A sample of 720 subjects(scaling patients and community people) was studied in Daegu city from November in 2008 to March in 2009. Authors first conceptualized the KSF, item generation, item reduction, and questionnaire formatting were performed in the stage of the development. Item descriptive, missing%, item internal consistency, and item discriminant validity were analyzed in the item-level, also descriptive, floor and ceiling effect were analyzed in the scale-level. Cronbach's alpha, test-retest, inter-dimension correlations, and factor analysis were performed to evaluate the validity and reliability in the new instrument. Confirmative factor analysis was did to evaluate the fit of model. The results for item-level and scale-level were acceptable except item discriminant validity. The reliability for 0.92~0.96 of corelation coefficient range(Cronbach's alpha 0.96~0.98) was high in the test-retest, and there was no significant difference in paired t-test. Item internal consistency(range of pearson corelation coefficient 0.39~0.95) was also high. The result of explanatory factor analysis was the same as the intended dimension structure, also confirmatory factor analysis results revealed that the dimensional structure model were fined well in the evaluation of model fit($x^2$= 1245.66, df=146, p=0.0000; GFI=0.85; AGFI=0.80; RMSEA=0.10). Factors related to KSF by multiple regression were gender($\beta$=0.28, p=0.0004) and teeth brush method($\beta$=-0.15, p=0.0053) in scaling patients, also gender($\beta$=0.25, p=0.0002), educational level($\beta$=0.14, p=0.0155), teeth brush method($\beta$=-0.09, p=0.0229) and time of daily work out($\beta$=-0.10, p=0.0055) were significantly associated with KSF in no scaling group. In conclusion, The results of this study reveal that the new developed measurement scale was reliable and val id instrument for measuring the KSF in dental hygiene patients and community people. We recommend that further research should develop more the instrument for the Korean scaling fear.

  • Research objectives: This research is focused on the multicultural families based on the existing studies. The problems that the women of the multicultural families experience in this society were studied, in relation to the adaptability to Korea by identifying the elements related to the use of and satisfaction level towards medical institutions. As such, this research is expected to be used as a data that can help to provide quality medical service to the women of the multicultural families. Research method: 188 women of the multicultural families were targeted to carry out research by conducting interview and by leveraging translated survey questionnaire. Then, SPSS 18.0 program was used to conduct statistical analysis. As for the analysis methods, frequency analysis, technical statistics, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis method were used. The results of the research were as follows. First, for the satisfaction level towards medical institutions for each class following each nation, Vietnam manifested highest satisfaction level when it comes to the public sanitation clinic, followed by the Philippines and China in the order listed. Meanwhile, Japan manifested the lowest satisfaction level. In case of the Asian medicine hospital, Japan manifested the highest satisfaction level contrary to the public sanitation clinic, followed by Philippines and China in the order listed. Meanwhile, Vietnam manifested the lowest satisfaction level. Second, 'satisfaction level towards nationality, education level, income, degree of adaptation and access to the medical institutions via transportation,' degree of adaptation towards the Korean society was manifested as an influential variable. As the degree of adaptation towards the Korean society increased, satisfaction level towards the degree of access to the medical institutions via transportation was proven to be high. Third, 'Nationality, education, income, hospital administration to help adapt the level of satisfaction' income if the first 1,5 million to 2,0 million won that low satisfaction than from 1 million to 1,5 million won and Higher of Korean society to adapt was higher Hospital Administrationon the level of satisfaction Conclusion: Nationality, education level, income, degree of adaptation towards the Korean society affect satisfaction level towards medical institutions. To increase the elements that increase the satisfaction level towards the medical institutions, multi-dimensional approach by each nationality, education level and income is required. In particular, it would be considered necessary to increase the level of adaptability to Korea.
