Awareness and practice of dental unit waterline management in dental hygienist (치과위생사의 치과 유니트 수관관리에 대한 인식과 실천도)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the awareness and practice of dental unit waterline management in dental hygienist. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 377 dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggido from March 2 to April 30, 2015. The data were collected by direct visit and informed consent was received after explanation of the study. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, awareness of dental waterline, practice of dental waterline, and implementation of dental waterline disinfection. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: There was a significant correlation between the dental unit waterline disinfection and the appropriateness of the water used for dental treatment(p<0.01, p<0.001). The handpiece was the most commonly used device before treatment and the majority of the subjects answered that they didn't take water out of ultrasonic scaler and air-water syringe on a daily basis. Conclusions: The majority of the dental hygienists did not know the right understanding and proper practice of dental unit waterline management. To reduce the dental device contamination, the continuing education of waterline management should be done for the dental hygienists.

The influence of subjective awareness of dental health status on the use of dental hygienic devices (주관적인 구강건강상태 인식이 구강관리용품의 인지 및 사용에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors of subjective awareness of dental health status on the use of dental hygienic devices. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 320 patients who visited dental clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from May to June 2014. Except incomplete answers, 284 copies were analyzed by SPSS WIN 18.0 program. The questionnaire was adapted from Park & Youn, and Chae. The questionnaire consisted of five questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, one question of subjective dental health status, eight questions of awareness of dental hygienic devices, and eight questions of use of dental hygienic devices. Results: Although the awareness of self dental health state was shown to statistically significantly affect the awareness of dental hygiene devices(p<0.001) which is the dependent variable, it was shown to not affect the use. Conclusions: Based on such results, to improve and maintain the dental health, an individual's subjective dental health state should be identified and provide accurate and objective information on the dental hygiene devices that are suitable to individual dental state, as well as make the patient's use of dental hygiene devices increase through continuous boosting of motivation.

Evaluation of dental web site usability in Korea (국내 치과 웹사이트에 대한 사용성 평가)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the dental website usability in Korea. The dental website included dental university hospital, network dental hospital and dental office. Methods: The study was carried out by three age groups including twenties, thirties, and forties. Each group consisted of ten customers and evaluated twelve websites of dental hospitals. Each was assigned to four hospitals and three tasks including easiness of online reservation, preventive information, and treatment information. They filled out the self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included the easiness of on-line reservation, satisfaction on the quality and quantity of preventive informations, satisfaction on the quality and quantity of treatment informations, predictiveness on the sub-menu, usefulness of site map, information on the main page of web site, usefulness of decision on visit to dentistry, and revisit intention. Results: The easiness of on-line reservation was the highest in the private dental office, and university dental hospital and network dental hospitals followed in conducting task(1). The anticipated value and measurement on the usefulness of web site were the lowest in network dental hospitals and the time interval between two values was 57 seconds. This discrepancy showed the largest difference. The satisfaction on treatment information in task(3) was higher than that of the satisfaction on preventive information in task (2). The revisit intention was the highest in dental university hospitals. Conclusions: This study showed the comparison in usefulness of web site of university dental hospitals, network dental hospitals and private dental office. The web site focused on the treatment information rather than preventive information. This study suggested that the most important function of dental web site would be the preventive information that was mainly operated by the role of dental hygienists rather than treatment information in the future.

Survey of conditions of dental prosthesis incentives of it in some area in Korea (우리나라 일부지역의 치과보철물 장착 동기에 관련된 요인에 관한 연구)

  • In the present work the knowledge of dental health as well as dental prosthesis has been studied on the basis of analysis of current dental prosthetic treatments for dental diseases prophylaxis and the final decision for dental prosthetic appliance. The results have been analyzed by the current dental health care and the subjective acknowledgement from 700 people of urban as well as rural inhabitance in our country. The results from the present work have been summarized as following: Depending dental status has been shown worse to be in the cases of divorce and bereavement, age and less educated or jobless. It is also interesting to note that the dental status has shown to be even worse than health status. It has been shown that the dental prosthetic treatments have been mainly caused by the oral disease (62.2%) and depend on the age and the educational level. According to the actual status of dental prosthetic treatments, the fixed partial denture was the most case (78.9%) that increased as divorced, bereavement and as less educated, less income, retired and jobless as well as from urban to rural. As a clinic for the dental prosthetic treatments, dental clinics have been most frequent visited as indicated by 59.6%, then the un-licensed dentist (6.5%), then the hospitals (3.7%), then the public health centers (2.2%). Most of those who are older in age, less educated and jobless have been treated by the un-licensed dentists. In point of view on the cost for dental prosthetic treatments, 93.1% have claimed to be too expensive, in as the divorced and the bereaved, the older age, the less educated and the jobless. About satisfaction of dental prosthetic treatments, 51.4% was satisfied, 39.4% was normal and 9.2% was dissatisfied. Most of people experienced increasing levels of satisfaction as their income increase. Most in the age range of 40-60 have wanted to be insured for the dental prosthetic treatments. It is also interesting to note that the older age and the less educated wanted to apply this kind of insurance.

The relationship between dental hygiene problems and dental hygiene planning according to oral health status (구강건강상태에 따른 치위생문제와 치위생계획의 연관성)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to reduce the burden on dental hygienists in performing dental hygiene processes in the clinic. This study systematically analyzed dental hygiene problems and dental hygiene planning according to the oral condition of patients by applying an oral health care program based on the dental hygiene process. Methods: This study analyzed influential factors of 17 dental hygiene problems and 12 dental hygiene plans according to the oral health index and charts of 185 patients. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB No. 1041449-201801-HR-003) of Silla University. The frequency of dental hygiene problems and dental hygiene planning was analyzed and correlations among the oral health index, dental hygiene problems, and dental hygiene planning were analyzed. Results: The higher the bleeding on probing score was, the more scaling was planned. The higher the calculus rate was, the more air-jet and jaw joint disorder prevention education was planned. The higher the O'Leary index was, the more dietary education and air-jet was planned. The higher the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index was, the more air-jet and jaw joint disorder prevention education was planned. The higher the Periodontal Screening and Recording index was, the more scaling and professional tooth cleaning was planned (p<0.05). Conclusions: The burden of oral preventive duties on dental hygienists will be minimized by systematically establishing problems and planning of dental hygiene according to patients' oral health index scores. Therefore, it is expected that dental hygienist can actively use the dental hygiene process in oral health care programs.

Dental care utilization patterns and its related factors of industrial workers (산업장 근로자의 치과의료이용양상 및 관련요인)

  • Objectives : This purpose of this study was to examine worker's Dental care utilization patterns and its related factors, to prepare basic data for oral health promotion of workers. Methods : The study subject were 1016 industrial workers from7 working places in Gyung-Sang-Buk Do and Daegu-City. Data for this study was obtained by self-administrated questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of general characteristics, yes or no of dental care utilization before six month, purpose of visit, yes or no of dental disease form the results of dental examination screening before one years, yes or no of and patterns dental care utilization of workers with dental disease, etc. The data was utilized using frequency test and $x^2-test$. Results : Rate of dental care utilization was 40% within six month last, among the general characteristics, it were statistically significant that higher age, married state, bad oral health state, high Work period. Rate of dental disease as a result of their dental examination last was 53.1% among the general characteristics, it were statistically significant that enough economic state, bad oral health state, blue collar work type. Dental care utilization's rate of dental disease as a result of their dental examination last was 48.6% among the general characteristics, it were statistically significant that Enough economic state, higher age, married state, high Work period. Conclusions : In order to promote workers of abnormal opinions to take the medical treatment on their dental diseases later dental examination, it is necessary to educate them consistently for the importance of early medical treatment.

The Professionalization of American Dental Hygienist (미국치과위생사의 전문직화에 대한 고찰)

  • In 2013, dental hygienist is in its 100th year. As Dr. Fones opened two year dental hygiene training program at Bridgeport Junior College in 1913. 'Dental Hygienist', the profession that specializes in oral disease prevention and health science, was first used. Since 'Dental Hygienist' was first introduced in the States, looking back through the America's development of dental hygienist would be the basis of checking development process of the international dental hygiene system and comparing the system of each country. This study focused on the contemplation of how America's dental hygienist became professional through 'development of dental hygienist', 'development of dental hygiene education system', 'development of dental hygienist's license and related qualification system', 'Dental hygienist laws and ethics', and 'dental hygienists' role and scope'. America's dental hygienist has requirements to become professional and also dental hygienist is socially recognized as professional. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the process of American dental hygienist professionalization. Thus, references and literature were gathered and analyzed.

Survey on Grade System and Job Types of Dental Hygienists in Dental Hospital (치과병원 근무 치과위생사의 직급체계와 직무유형 조사)

  • Purpose: This study is to provide basic data for establishing successful organization management strategies of organizations by understanding rank systems and duty types of dental hygienists who work in dental hospitals. Methodology/Approach: The study conducted a survey and an interview survey two times targeting the entire dental hospitals. The first survey secured the response results of 113 hospitals in the result that conducted the survey targeting 190 dental hospitals in the whole country except 24 ones including dental college hospitals, dental hospitals affiliated with medical colleges or general hospitals, military dental hospitals, and dental hospitals for the disabled among the 214 ones which were registered in the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service as of December 2015. The second survey conducted the interview survey targeting persons in charge of personnel management by selecting 34 dental hospitals with rank systems of 4 rank systems and above. Finding: The dental hospital has found that dental hygienists-centered human resources were composed. The number of ranks has found that 1 to 6 levels are shown and level 3 is highest. Titles of staff levels have found that 32 places are highest in order of 'employees

Awareness and practice of infection control in dental hygienists: A comparison between accredited and non-accredited dental hospitals (치과위생사의 감염관리 인지 및 실천도 연구 :인증치과병원과 비인증치과병원의 비교)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of dental hospital accreditation and the awareness and practice of infection control in dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 238 dental hygienists working at dental hospitals in Gwangju Jeonnam and analyzed from October 24, 2016 to September 22, 2017. Data were analyzed with the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, version 21.0. Results: Compared to non-accredited dental hospitals, all three variables were high for accredited dental hospitals. In accredited dental hospitals, healthcare accreditation expectancy effects correlated to awareness (r=0.407) and practice (r=0.533) of infection control, and awareness of infection control correlated to its practice (r=0.725). In non-accredited dental hospitals, healthcare accreditation expectancy effects correlated to awareness of infection control (r=0.239), and awareness of infection control correlated to its practice (r=0.481). Accredited dental hospitals showed healthcare accreditation expectancy effects (${\beta}=0.258$) and awareness of infection control (${\beta}=0.556$), and non-accredited dental hospitals were influenced by the number of employees (${\beta}=0.567$) and awareness of infection control (${\beta}=0.376$). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop efficient and systematic infection control programs to improve the awareness and practice of infection control in dental hygienists and patient's safety in the clinical field.

Analysis of dental avoidance factors of dental patients (치과환자의 치과기피요인에 대한 분석)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the factors that prevent dental patients from visiting the dental clinic. Methods: From June 22, 2020 to July 17, 2020, among patients 10 years or older who had visited the dental clinic, 314 individuals who agreed to the study were asked to fill out a self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics 22.0 program, and the significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The dental avoidance factors according to the general characteristics were high in women and housewives, and among the dental-related characteristics, the most common reason for visiting the dental clinic was experiencing pain. The factors influencing anxiety were fear, environment, stimulus, age, and exercise, and the factors influencing the fear were anxiety, stimulus, subjective oral health status, education, and exercise. The factors influencing the stimulus were environmental factors, fear, anxiety, and age, and the factors that influenced environmental factors were stimulus and anxiety. Conclusions: There is a need to develop measures and policies to overcome fear of dental procedures, such as developing a dental experience program and allowing patients to experience dental fear and anxiety in advance.
