  • Recently Hazelton and Turlach (2009) proposed a weighted kernel density estimator for the deconvolution problem. In the case of Gaussian kernels and measurement error, they argued that the weighted kernel density estimator is a competitive estimator over the classical deconvolution kernel estimator. In this paper we consider weighted kernel density estimators when sample observations are contaminated by double exponentially distributed errors. The performance of the weighted kernel density estimators is compared over the classical deconvolution kernel estimator and the kernel density estimator based on the support vector regression method by means of a simulation study. The weighted density estimator with the Gaussian kernel shows numerical instability in practical implementation of optimization function. However the weighted density estimates with the double exponential kernel has very similar patterns to the classical kernel density estimates in the simulations, but the shape is less satisfactory than the classical kernel density estimator with the Gaussian kernel.

  • We investigate the unbiasedness and consistency as the statistical properties of density estimators. We show histogram, kernel density estimation, and local adaptive smoothing as density smoothing in this paper. Also, the early and recent research on nonparametric density estimation is described and discussed.

  • The effects of paper properties such as density, air permeability, water vapor transmission rate on the thermal performance of plate-type enthalpy exchanger were experimentally investigated. Three enthalpy exchanger samples having different properties were made, and were tested according to the standard test procedure (KS B 6879). Effective efficiencies were defined, which accounted for the air leakage between supply and exhaust streams. Results showed that paper density affected the sensible heat transfer of the samples. Sensible heat transfer increased with density of the paper. It was also shown that water vapor transmission rate alone was not a proper indicator for the efficiency of latent heat transfer. Air permeability should also be considered for adequate evaluation of the latent heat transfer. Best performance was obtained for the sample having highest paper density and moderate water vapor transmission ratio.

  • This study was carried out to utilize old newspaper(ONP) and paper sludge more effectively, and also to elucidate the influences of pressing conditions on the medium density fiberboard(MDF) properties. MDFs were made from ONP and low grade of paper sludge by wet process with change of pressing time, temperature and pressure. MDFs of ONP were more affected by pressing conditions, especially pressing pressure, but temperature and pressing time were also important. According to mixing paper sludge to ONP tensile and bending strength of MDF were decreased, but density and dimensional stability were improved. These results indicated that some physical properties of MDF can be improved by paper sludge and it is possible to use it in MDF.

  • The impact of major surface chemical properties of silica sols on the retention and drainage performance of the silica based micrparticle system, Compozil was investigated using four different silica sols. And the effect of silica properties on the interactions with cationic starch and cationic plyacrylamide has also been identified. The surface charge density and the stability over pH of silica sols were increased by introducing aluminosilicate anions at surface. It was found that the charge density of silica sols determined the addition level necessary to attain the maximum retention and drainage. When silica sols were combined with cationic starch, the change density of the product was the critical properties and the degree of microagregation was of minor importance. In the cationic polyacrylamide system the degree of colloid structure appeared to be a more critcial property than the charge density of silica sols.

  • This paper presents results km a series of model tests oil vertically loaded single piles to compare the behaviors of H and pipe piles under the same ground condition. The aims of this paper were to compare the bearing capacity of H-pile md pipe piles under in the same ground condition and to estimate the effect of gravity acceleration and relative soil density. Relative density of soil were made to be 40%, 80% and embedded length of pile on sand was increased by 10, 12, 14, 16 times of the diameter of pile, respectively. As a results of test series, allowable load of H-pile is from 6.4% to 18.2% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 80% and from 9.1% to 39.4% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 40%. As a results of numerical analysis, we were predicted behaviour of stress-displacement of pile with model test. In the case of relative density 80% and 40%, bearing capacity of H pile represent from 17.74% to 18.6% larger than allowable load of pipe pile.

  • For the purpose of study on the printability of domestic art papers, the physical properties of domestic coated paper for offset printing were investigated. 25 kinds of sample papers were prepared and were examined in accordance with KS and TAPPI standard testing method i.e., basis weight, density, opacity, gloss, roughness, smoothness, brightness, and K&N absorption. IGT printability tester was used to obtain the printability parameters, such as maximum ink requirement of paper Y, limiting printing density D print through, and density smoothness constant m value.

  • The effects of paper properties such as density, air permeability, water vapor transmission rate on the thermal performance of plate-type enthalpy exchanger were experimentally investigated. Papers having different properties were made from the same pulp by calendering or refining. Enthalpy exchanger samples were made from the papers, and were tested according to the standard test procedure (KS B 6879). Effective efficiencies were obtained, which accounted for the air leakage between supply and exhaust streams. Results showed that paper density affected the sensible heat transfer of the samples. Sensible heat transfer increased with density of the paper. It was also shown that effective efficiency of latent heat transfer was approximately the same independent of the samples, which suggests that papers made of the same pulp show similar water vapor transmission characteristics independent of the degree of calendering or refining. Best performance was obtained for the sample having highest paper density and moderate water vapor transmission ratio.

  • The purpose of this paper was developing a development density control model for urban growth management, using system dynamics modeling. The density control model was developed to see how urban growth, transition, and decay occur depending on the interaction among population, houses, industry structure, land and urban infrastructure such as road, water supply, and sewage treatment facilities. Suggesting adequate level of development density control using the model was another purpose of this paper. The model was applied to An'yang city to estimate the maximum number of population, industry structures, houses, and cars that can be adequately sustained with the current An'yang city's infrastructur capacity. The computer simulation results shows that the city is overpopulated by some 90,000 people. To reduce the population to the adequate level that the current urban infrastructure can sustain, the current city regulation on floor area ratio are needed to be strengthened at least 20 to 35%.

  • In this paper, we evaluated error correction performance and recording density of an optical disc system. The performance of Low-Density Parity Check code (LDPC) is compared to the HD-DVD (BD) ECC. The recording density of optical disc can be increased by reducing the redundancy of the user data. Moreover, since the correction capability of LDPC with decreased redundancy is better than that of BD, the recording density can also be increased by reducing the mark length of the data on the disc surface.
