  • Bi-layer Mo films were deposited on soda-lime glass substrates using DC magnetron supttering. Increasing gas pressure, the resistivity varied from $1\times10^{-5}\; to\; 8.3\times10^{-3}\; \Omega.cm$. Furthermore, stress direction yielded compressive-to-tensile transition stress curves. The micro-structure of the compressively-stressed film which had poor adhesion consists of tightly packed columns, but of the tensile-stressed films had less dense structure. Under all gas pressure conditions, Mo films exhibited distinctly increasing optical reflection with decreasing gas pressure. The expansion of (110) peak width with the gas pressure meant the worse crystalline growth. The impurity levels in the Mo film exhibited highly concentrated Na, Se and O elements due to less dense micro-structure. The degree of Na diffusion depends on the type of the glass substrate used and the nature of the Mo film.

  • Young's modulus of electroplated nickel thin film is systematically investigated using the resonance method of atomic force microscope. Thin layers of nickel to be measured are electroplated onto the surface of an AFM silicon cantilever and Young's modulus of plated nickel film is investigated as a function of process conditions such as the plating temperature and applied current density. It is found that Young's modulus of plated nickel thin film is as high as that of bulk nickel at low plating temperature or low current density, but decreases with increasing plating temperature or current density. The results imply that the plating rate increases as increasing the plating temperature or current density, therefore, slow plating rate produces a dense plating material due to the sufficient time fur nickel ions to form a dense coating.

  • One of the remarkable problems in PIM-DM (Protocol Independent Multicast - Dense Mode) is the join latency time, increasing for specific periods. The reason of this problem is proved to the confusion of flooding prune message and leave prune message. We propose a new solution to this problem, reducing the average join latency by 37.4%, and prove the proposed solution by network simulation.

  • We study the environmental dependence of the mass-size relation especially for the most massive early type galaxies (M>$10^{11.2}M_{\odot}$) in the redshift range 0.15~0.25. As a measure of the environment, galaxy number densities are measured by the $10^{th}$ nearest galaxies within 7000km/s from galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts. We find that galaxies more massive than $10^{11.6}M_{\odot}$ show the environmental dependence in the mass-size relation. The galaxies with M>$10^{11.6}M_{\odot}$ located in the densest, cluster like environment have larger sizes than their counterparts located in a low dense environment. We also find that this environmental dependence of the mass-size relation originates from the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG) rather than non-BCG galaxies. Our result can be explained with a hierarchical growth of the most massive galaxies through dissipation-less merger in dense environments.

  • Interaction of the the rust fungus Puccinia miscanthi with the biofuel plant Miscanthus sinensis during the teliospore phase was investigated by light and electron microscopy. P. miscanthi telia were oval-shaped and present on both the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces. Teliospores were brown, one-septate (two-celled), and had pedicels attached to one end. Transmission electron microscopy revealed numerous electron-translucent lipid globules in the cytoplasm of teliospores. Extensive cell wall dissolution around hyphae was not observed in the host tissues beneath the telia. Hyphae were found between mesophyll cells in the leaf tissues as well as in host cells. Intracellular hyphae, possibly haustoria, possessed electron-dense fungal cell walls encased by an electron-transparent fibrillar extrahaustorial sheath that had an electron-dense extrahaustorial membrane. The infected host cells appeared to maintain their membrane-bound structures such as nuclei and chloroplasts. These results suggest that the rust fungus maintains its biotrophic phase with most mesophyll cells of M. sinensis. Such a nutritional mode would permit the rust fungus to obtain food reserves for transient growth in the course of host alteration.

  • A new scheme for bi-directional HDTV/Gigabit Ethernet/CATV transmission over a hybrid dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (DWDM-PON) is proposed and demonstrated. It is based on injection-locked vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and distributed-feedback laser diodes as transmitters. Services with 129 HDTV channels, a 1.25 Gbps Gigabit Ethernet connection, and 77 CATV channels are successfully demonstrated over 40 km single-mode fiber links. Good performance of bit error rate, carrier-to-noise ratio, composite second order, and composite triple beat is achieved in our proposed bidirectional DWDM-PON.

  • In this study, which focuses on ice storage, a fundamental study in cooling and solidification was performed, including the interesting phenomena of density inversion, supercooling and dendritic ice. A numerical study was performed for natural convection and ice formation considering existence of subcooling and dendritic ice were analyzed numerically by using finite difference method and boundary fixing method. In the mesh, the solid fraction was introduced with adding as a term to the energy conservation equation. A flow in the dendrite was modelled as a flow in a porous medium, and the momentum conservation equation was modified to incorporate resistance forces involved in flows through porous media. A numerical solution of the time dependencies of dendrite area and dense ice front was successfully obtained, and the numerical results were good agreement with experimental results. Based on this methodology, a discussion was made of phenomena and characteristics of cooling and freezing processes under various conditions.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the possibility of a composite material containing a composite resin as a matrix and hydroxyapatite (HAp) powder as a substitute material for tooth repair. As the content of HAp increased, hardness value (111.9 HV at 9%) increased and flexural strength (73.3 MPa at 9%) decreased. Observation of the microstructure after immersion in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution confirmed a dense structure due to mutual coagulation and curing. It was thought that fine HAp recrystals were formed with the lapse of time, and they were entangled to form a condensation structure and had a dense structure. In addition, since the activity was shown by the ion migration on the surface of a tooth, it was highly likely that a biocompatible bond occurred during tooth contact. Therefore, it could be used as a substitute material for tooth repair.

  • Water retaining pavement is a pavement to lower the surface temperature by using evaporation of the water that the pavement contains when the pavement is heated by the sun in the daytime. The objective of this study is to develop water retaining materials. In this study we evaluated the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material. We produced dense grade asphalt pavement, porous asphalt pavement, semi-rigid Pavement, semi-rigid pavement included a charcoal and semi-rigid pavement included a sepiolite, and then tested surface temperature characteristics. The test result says that water retaining pavements using a sepiolite and a charcoal lower surface temperature more than $10^{\circ}C$ compared to dense grade asphalt pavement. We confirm the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material according to the test results.

  • Dense $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles with a spherical shape have been synthesized through spray pyrolysis method using basic aluminum nitrate precursor as a spray solution. Also, a thin layer of silica on the surface of $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$ particles were coated by hydrolysis reaction of alkoxide sources with the particles. The correlation between PL intensity and surface treatment by coating for the dense $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu^{2+}$ particles have been investigated.
