  • In this paper, we investigate a group building based power consumption scheduling to minimize the electricity cost. We consider the demand shift to reduce the peak load and suggest the compensation function reflecting the relationship between the change of the building demand and the occupants' comfort. Using that, the electricity cost minimization problem satisfied the convexity is formulated, and the optimal power consumption scheduling algorithm is proposed based on the iterative method. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm achieves the group management gain compared to the individual building operation by increasing the degree of freedom for the operation.

  • This paper proposes probabilistic models for estimating the seismic demands on reinforced concrete (RC) bridges with base isolation. The models consider the shear and deformation demands on the bridge columns and the deformation demand on the isolation devices. An experimental design is used to generate a population of bridges based on the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (AASHTO 2007) and the Caltrans' Seismic Design Criteria (Caltrans 1999). Ground motion records are used for time history analysis of each bridge to develop probabilistic models that are practical and are able to account for the uncertainties and biases in the current, common deterministic model. As application of the developed probabilistic models, a simple method is provided to determine the fragility of bridges. This work facilitates the reliability-based design for this type of bridges and contributes to the transition from limit state design to performance-based design.

  • In this paper, we first introduce a general architecture of an energy management system in a home area network based on a smart grid. Then, we propose an efficient scheduling method for home power usage. The home gateway (HG) receives the demand response (DR) information indicating the real-time electricity price, which is transferred to an energy management controller (EMC). Referring to the DR, the EMC achieves an optimal power scheduling scheme, which is delivered to each electric appliance by the HG. Accordingly, all appliances in the home operate automatically in the most cost-effective way possible. In our research, to avoid the high peak-to-average ratio (PAR) of power, we combine the real-time pricing model with the inclining block rate model. By adopting this combined pricing model, our proposed power scheduling method effectively reduces both the electricity cost and the PAR, ultimately strengthening the stability of the entire electricity system.

  • We propose a hybrid broadcast scheduling based on a combination of periodic and on-demand data scheduling methods for mobile data broadcasting in convergence networks from communication and broadcasting. We consider an environment in which the forward channel is for data broadcasting and the reverse channel is for sending data requests via cellular phones, WLAN, WiBro, etc. Collecting statistics of requests from clients, the server partitions the data items into hot-item and cold-item sets. Hot items are sent based on a push-based scheduling. An on-demand scheduling method is applied to cold items. Performance evaluation from simulations shows that our proposed scheduling algorithm yields small response time with high successful response ratio.

  • Many vehicle routing methods have been suggested, which minimize the routing distances of vehicles to reduce the total transportation cost. But the more considerations the method takes, the higher complexites are involved in a large number of practical situations. The purpose of this paper is to develop a vehicle distribution planning system using heuristic algorithms and simulation techniques for home electronics companies. The vehicle distribution planning system developed by this study involves such complicated and stochastic conditions as one depot, multiple nodes(demand points), multiple vehicle types, multiple order items, and other many restrictions for operating vehicles. The proposed system is compared with the nearest neighbor method of the current system in terms of total logistics cost and driving time. This heuristics algorithm and simulation based distribution planning system is efficient in computational complexity, and give improved solutions with respect to the cost as well as the time. This method constructs a route with a minimum number of vehicles for a given demand.

  • This paper presents an approximate model for computing the peak demand power in a metro railway system. The peak demand of substations can be calculated using the current vector iteration method. But the existing method requires many repeated calculations to determine the peak demand power, which makes it difficult to apply to the real-time peak power control problem. In this paper, we assume that none of the conditions vary except source impedance and make an approximate model for rapid calculation based on changes in the impedance of the power substation. The proposed model result is approximately the same as the existing model, which is demonstrated through simulation.

  • In this paper, a new probabilistic generation modeling method which can address the characteristics of changed electricity industry is proposed. The major contribution of this paper can be captured in the development of a probabilistic generation modeling considering generator maintenance outage and in the classification of market demand into multiple demand clusters for the applications to electricity markets. Conventional forced outage rates of generators are conceptually combined with maintenance outage of generators and, consequently, effective outage rates of generators are new iy defined in order to properly address the probabilistic characteristic of generation in electricity markets. Then, original market demands are classified into several distinct demand clusters, which are defined by the effective outage rates of generators and by the inherent characteristic of the original demand. We have found that generators have different effective outage rates values at each classified demand cluster, depending on the market situation. From this, therefore, it can be seen that electricity markets can also be classified into several groups which show similar patterns and that the fundamental characteristics of power systems can be more efficiently analyzed in electricity markets perspectives, for this classification can be widely applicable to other technical problems in power systems such as generation scheduling, power flow analysis, price forecasts, and so on.

  • This study was designed to investigate a method for short-term, real-time energy demand prediction, to cope with changing loads for the effective operation and management of buildings. Through a case study, a novel methodology for real-time energy demand prediction with the use of weather forecasting data was suggested. To perform the input and output operations of weather data, and to calculate solar radiation and EnergyPlus, the BCVTB (Building Control Virtual Test Bed) was designed. Through the BCVTB, energy demand prediction for the next 24 hours was carried out, based on 4 real-time weather data and 2 solar radiation calculations. The weather parameters used in a model equation to calculate solar radiation were sourced from the weather data of the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). Depending on the local weather forecast data, the results showed their corresponding predicted values. Thus, this methodology was successfully applicable to anywhere that local weather forecast data is available.

  • This paper presents a study the change of the load profile on the power system by the charging impact of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2020. The impact of charging EVs on the load demand is determined not only by the number of EVs in usage pattern, but also by the number of EVs being charged at once. The charging load is determined on an hourly basis using the number of the EVs based on different scenarios considering battery size, model, the use of vehicles, charging at home or work, and the method of charging, which is either fast or slow. Focusing on the impact of future load profile in Korea with EVs reaching up 10 and 20 percentage, increased power demand by EVs charging is analyzed. Also, this paper analyzes the impact of a time-of-use (TOU) tariff system on the charging of EVs in Korea. The results demonstrate how the penetration of EVs increases the load profile and decreases charging demand by TOU tariff system on the future power system.

  • This study assessed evapotranspiration (ET) methods applying for estimation of paddy rice water demand based on agricultural water supply. The Modified Penman (MP) method and the Penman-Monteith (PM) method recently suggested by Rural Development Administration (RDA) were considered. The 6 Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) command areas located in Honam province were selected in this study. The climate characteristics were also analysed with the average annual and the growing season temperatures and rainfalls. As a result, the annual average and the growing season temperature showed the increased trend while the rainfall tended to decrease during 30 years. The paddy rice water demand found to be directly influenced by these climate trends as ET also affected by them. The higher values of paddy rice water demand were obtained from applying MP method compared to the one applying PM method. The lower differences were also obtained from MP method for the comparisons between the paddy rice water demand estimated by both methods with agricultural water supply. Therefore, these results suggest that the MP method is more desirable to use for estimating paddy rice water demand in order to achieve stability of irrigation designs and plans.
