The stone sludge produced during the manufacturing process of stone blocks is considered as one of industrial waste materials. This stone sludge are managed to either burying under the ground or stacking in the yard, but this disposal process is required an extra costs. The stone sludge disposal like burying or stacking also cause environmental pollutions such as ground pollution and subterranean water pollution. Thus, this study was conducted to explore the possibility of recycling of stone dust sludge as a concrete mixing material in order to extend recycling methods and to solve the shortage of aggregate caused by recently increased demand in construction. Based on the experiment results on various ratios of cement to stone sludge content, the compressive strengths of concrete were recorded in the range of $20{\sim}30N/mm2$. The results did not show any decrease in compressive strength due to the stone dust content. It can be concluded that the stone sludge produced by stone block manufacturing can be sufficiently recycled as one of concrete mixing materials in the aspect of compressive strength.
LNG demand has been rapidly increasing in Korea for a variety of reaso including stable supply, non- polluting, and high combustion efficiency characteris As a result the construction and expansion of LNG storage facilities have b continuing at a vigorous pace. One of the most important structural core elemen the LNG storage tank is the membrane, consisting of stainless steel. The memb to be applied inside of LNG storage tank is provided with corrugations to abs thermal contraction and expansion caused by LNG temperature. From the viewp of strength design, however. it is essential to confirm that the membrane undergo a stable deformation and has a sufficient fatigue strength Experim studies are presented to investigate the deformation and strength of the memb which is designed by Kogas. All experiments are conducted on the basis of RP and we found the results is fully satisfied with the RPIS.
Demand for new nondestructive evaluations is growing to detect tensile crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments, especially when they are in non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time frequency analysis methods. The results obtained are summaries as follows ; In the T and TN specimen consisting of ferrite and pearlite grains, most of acoustic emission events were produced near yield point, mainly due to the dislocation activities during the deformation. However, B specimen under $600^{\circ}C$ - 10min had a two peak which was attribute to the presence of martensite phase. The first peak is before yield point the second is after yield point. The sources of second acoustic emission peak were the debonding of martensite-martensite interface and the micro-cracking of brittle martensite phase. In $600^{\circ}C$-30min to $700^{\circ}C$-60min specimens, many signals were observed from area before yield point and counts were decreased after yield point.
There has been increasing demand to the eco-friendly materials such as phytoncide which is extracted to plants in the textile industry, recently. It is interesting that alginic acid sodium salt(Alg-Na) is used to eco-friendly binder for the functional capsule finishing. In this study, we made PEO/Alg-Na blend solutions of various ratio and observed the changing binding property of the blend solutions according to PEO contents through FT-IR, DSC, contact angle, peel strength, etc. The viscosity of Alg-Na/PEO blend solutions increased with increase of contents and the viscosity quickly increased with increase of PEO content in Alg-Na 5% content, specially. It is shown that the hydrogen bond peak by blend of Alg-Na and PEO found through FT-IR analysis but the peak decreased in PEO above 60% content. And the peel strength was predominant in PEO 50% ratio.
In regions of high seismic risk, high-strength concrete (HSC) columns of tall buildings are designed to be fully ductile during earthquake attack by providing substantial amount of confining steel within the critical region. However. in areas of low to moderate seismic risk, the same provision of confining steel is too conservative because of the reduced seismic demand. More critically, it causes problematic steel congestion in the beam-column joints and column critical region. This will eventually affect the quality of concrete placing owing to blockage. To relieve the problem, the confining steel in the critical region of HSC columns located in low to moderate seismicity regions can be suitably reduced, while maintaining a limited ductility level. Despite the advantage, there are still no guidelines developed for designing limited ductility HSC columns. In this paper, a formula for designing limited ductility HSC columns is presented. The validity of the formula was verified by testing half-scale HSC columns subjected to combined high-axial load and flexure, in which the confining steel was provided as per the proposed formula. From the test results, it is evident that the curvature ductility factors obtained for all these columns were about 10, which is the generally accepted level of limited ductility.
The strength and stiffness of the steel beams to concrete-filled tubular columns connections are significantly reduced if the thick-walled components are used. However, the thick-walled tubes used for columns can largely reduce the demand for space and increase the strength-to-weight ratio. This paper describes the cyclic performance of extended through-diaphragm connections between steel beams and thick-walled concrete-filled tubular columns improved with fillets around the diaphragm corners. Test on one full-scale connection was conducted to assess the seismic behavior of the connection in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, deformation, energy dissipation, and strain distribution. It is shown that the fillets and extended through-diaphragm can alleviate the stress concentration in the connection and thus improve the seismic performance. The test results demonstrate that the through-diaphragm connections with thick-walled concrete-filled tubular columns can offer sufficient energy dissipation capacity and ductility appropriate for its potential application in seismic design.
In recent days, the beneficial effects of using fiber reinforced concrete, especially Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete, have been on the rise. However, few studies on long-term behavior of SFRC are executed in spite of great demand of SFRC. The fact that SFRC is far better than NRC in various properties such as tensile strength, ductility, flexural toughness has been certified by many researchers. And, those advantages can be also applied to decrease the structures deterioration induced by creep and shrinkage. Furthermore, even though it is fact that SFRC is generally used in joint members to distribute concentrated stresses by fibers, SFRC is treated as NRC in designing especially for long-term behavior of structures. So this paper is about a study on the long-term response of SFRC applied to HPC about 40MPa. Therefore, in this paper, the test results of eighteen high-strength concrete specimens and steel fiber-reinforced concrete specimens, with steel fiber content of $1\%$ by volume were presented. The test result shows that SFRC is advantageous rather than NRC in long-term response.
As the aggregate supply and demand shortages in Korea due to the lack of aggregates due to the regulation of production and use conditions of domestic aggregate collectors, the media recently pointed out the distribution of so-called bad aggregates containing soil powder. Such poor aggregates have a high self-absorption rate according to the reference, etc., leading to a decrease in the fluidity of the concrete. Therefore, in order to secure fluidity, the unit quantity increases greatly from $30kg/m^3$ to $55kg/m^3$, and the increased unit yield eventually leads to a decrease in compressive strength, resulting in a decrease in strength from about 35% to 45% compared to general aggregates. It indicates that there is a risk of shortening the life of the structure. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of aggregate soil on concrete.
Recently, the demand has increased for protective clothing materials capable of shielding the wearer from bullets, fragment bullets, knives, and swords. It is therefore necessary to develop light and soft protective clothing materials with excellent wearability and mobility. To this end, research is being conducted on hybrid design methods for various highly functional materials, such as carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets, which are well known for their low weight and excellent strength. In this study, a hybrid protective material using CNT sheets was developed and its performance was evaluated. The material design incorporated a bonding method that used a binder for interlayer combination between the CNT sheets. Four types of binders were selected according to their characteristics and impregnated within CNT sheets, followed by further combination with aramid fabric to produce the hybrid protective material. After applying the binder, the tensile strength increased significantly, especially with the phenoxy binder, which has rigid characteristics. However, as the molecular weight of the phenoxy binder increased, the adhesive force and strength decreased. On the other hand, when a 25% lightweight-design and high-molecular-weight phenoxy binder were applied, the backface signature (BFS) decreased by 6.2 mm. When the CNT sheet was placed in the middle of the aramid fabric, the BFS was the lowest. In a stab resistance test, the penetration depth was the largest when the CNT sheet was in the middle layer. As the binder was applied, the stab resistance improvement against the P1 blade was most effective.
Free-form buildings serve as landmarks, and interest and demand are increasing. However, in the case of free-form concrete members, different curved surfaces are required depending on the location where they are used, and the formwork is custom-made and used. Concrete is poured into the manufactured formwork to produce FCP (Free-form Concrete Panel). However, since it is an atypical building that requires precise curvature, compaction cannot be performed after concrete is poured. This leads to the occurrence of bughole, which reduce the strength and aesthetics of concrete. Therefore, in this study, we intend to conduct basic experiments to develop a magnetic compaction device that can be used for FCP. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the bug hole was improved when the magnetic compaction device was applied, and there was no significant difference in compressive strength and flexural strength. This technology can be used in the field of Free-form concrete where it is difficult to perform compaction work, and it is expected to be used as a basic research related to technology for new automatic compaction.
