  • Highway geometric design aims to provide drivers with safe and efficient road conditions. Highway design method of Korea doesn't consider demand characteristics of drivers, vehicles etc. Therefore there is a gap between designer's expectation and user's behavior and it hinders to make safer roads. It is required to develop the geometric design criteria and design method based on driving characteristics to provide safe and flexible design. This study suggested a geometric design method of horizontal curves on rural 4-lane highways based on speed distribution.

  • This paper presents the measurement and correction method of PCB alignment errors for PCB screen printer. Electronic equipment is getting smaller and yet must satisfy high performance standard. Therefore, there is a great demand for PCB with high density. However conventional PCB screen printer doesn't have enough accuracy to accommodate the demand for high-resolution circuit pattern and high-density mounting capacity of electronic chips. It is because the alignment errors of PCB occur when it is loaded to the screen printer. Therefore, this study focuses on the development of the system which is able to measure and correct alignment errors with high-accuracy. An automatic optical inspection part measures the PCB alignment errors using machine vision, and the high-accuracy 3-axis stage makes correction for these errors. This system used two CCD cameras to get images of two fiducial marks of PCB. The centers of fiducial marks are obtained by using moment, gradient method. The first method is calculating the centroid by using first moment of blob, and the latter method is calculating the center of the circle whose equation is obtained by curve-fitting the boundaries of fiducial mark. The operating system used to implement the whole set-up is carried in Window 98 (or NT) environment. Finally we implemented this system to PCB screen printer.

  • Dynamic analyses were carried out to study the seismic response of high-rise steel moment-resisting frames in sixteen story buildings. The frames are intentionally designed by three different design procedures; strength controlled design. strong column-weak beam controlled design. and drift controlled design. The seismic performances of the so-designed frames with vertical mass irregularities were discussed in view of drift ratio. plastic hinge rotation, hysteretic energy input and stress demand. A demand curve of hysteretic energy inputs was also presented with two earthquake levels in peak ground accelerations for a future design application.

  • Growth curves are widely used in forecasting the market demand. When there are only a few data points available, the estimated model parameters have a low confidence. In this case, if some expert opinions are available, it would be better for predicting future demand to adjust the model parameters using these information. This paper proposes the methodology for re-estimation of model parameters in growth curves when adjusting market potential and/or time of maximum sales. We also provide the detailed procedures for five growth curves including Bass, Logistic, Gompertz, Weibull and Cumulative Lognormal models. Applications to real data are also included.

  • This paper presents a displacement-based seismic design method with damage control, in which the targets for the considered performance level are set as displacements and a damage distribution is proposed by the designer. The method is based on concepts of basic structural dynamics and of a reference single degree of freedom system associated to the fundamental mode with a bilinear behaviour. Based on the characteristics of this behaviour curve and on the requirements of modal spectral analysis, the stiffness and strength of the structural elements of the structure satisfying the target design displacement are calculated. The formulation of this method is presented together with the formulations of two other existing methods currently considered of practical interest. To illustrate the application of the proposed method, 5 reinforced concrete plane frames: 8, 17 and 25 storey regular, and 8 and 12 storey irregular in elevation. All frames are designed for a seismic demand defined by single earthquake record in order to compare the performances and damage distributions used as design targets with the corresponding results of the nonlinear step by step analyses of the designed structures subjected to the same seismic demand. The performances and damage distributions calculated with these analyses show a good agreement with those postulated as targets.

  • The field of land surveying is changing dramatically due to the way data is processed, analyzed and presented. Also, there is a growing demand for digital spatial information, coming primarily from the GIS (Geographical Information System) user community. Such a demand has created a strong development potential for a new land surveying software. An overview of the development and capabilities of a land surveying software platform based on the Windows system, SurveyingMap, is presented. Among its many features, SurveyingMap provides a lot of adaptability for networks adjustment, geodetic and plane coordinates transformation, contouring, sectioning, DTM (Digital Terrain Model) generation, and large scale mapping applications. The system output is compatible with well known computer aided drafting (CAD) /GIS packages to expand its scope of applications. SurveyingMap is also suitable for non-technical users due to the user-friendly graphic user interface. The system could be used in engineering, architecture, GIS, and academic teaching and research, among other fields. Two applications of SurveyingMap, extension of field control and large scale mapping, for the case study area are established. The results demonstrate that the system is adaptable and reasonably priced for use by college and university students.

  • With a prospective of rapid deployment of IOT, a systematic approach to derive a business strategy for various possible scenarios of IOT applications is in great demand. In this paper, a conceptual framework that can be utilized for the purpose of assessing the market potential and of setting up an initial business strategy for IOT deployment is suggested. The framework consists of utilization of well-known value curve analysis, ecosystem analysis and house of quality tools. The value curve analysis is utilized to identify value-enhancing components of consumers as well as relative strengths of suppliers. The ecosystem analysis is used to identify relevant players of the supply chain and their mutual relationships. The house of quality is suitable for developing the initial business strategy of the supplier by converting consumer requirements identified by value curve analysis into technical requirements for the supplier. In this paper, we applied our proposed framework to two services that have high potentiality of being benefited by IOT: car-sharing service and telehealth service.

  • Safety issue for offshore wind-turbine foundation becomes a crucial factor as offshore wind turbines have been scaled up. Correspondingly, there is a demand to understand the effect of soil-structure interaction on to system behavior in geotechnical engineering point of view. The p-y curve method researched in past few decades is one of the most appropriate methodology to analyze the problem. In this study, recently proposed p-y curve models for various rocks are calibrated to analyze the engineering characteristics of seabed of Jeju Island where it is known to be most suitable area for offshore wind energy farm. Step by step calibration process for p-y models is presented. Analysis results show that subgrade reaction generally increases as closer to seabed. It is also shown that the behavioral characteristics of foundation reflect well rock properties in terms of resultant moment, shear force, etc.

  • This study proposes a new numerical analysis method for assessing the outage cost of the composite power system with considering transmission system at load points. The proposed method comes from combination of the expected energy not served curve(EENSC) with the marginal outage cost function obtained at load points. Uncertainty of the outages of the generation and transmission systems was also included in this study. This study can be categorized into three processing parts as like as follows. Firstly, EENSC at load points was developed newly from the composite power system effective load duration curve which has been proposed by the authors. Secondly, this study proposes a new technical method for determining the coefficients of the marginal outage cost functions at load points in the composite power system(Generation and Transmission systems). It is a main key point that the mathematical expression for the marginal outage cost function at a load point is formulated and evaluated using relations between the GNP (or GDP) and the electrical energy demand at the load pint. Finally, the outage cost was calculated in this paper by combining the proposed EENSC with the marginal outage cost function evaluated at each load point. It is another important feature that the average costs for future at load points can be forescasted using the proposed approach. The effectiveness of the proposed new approach is demonstrated by the case studies with the IEEE-RTS.

  • There is a growing interest in various microgrid solutions that supply electricity 24 hours a day to off-grid areas where are not connected with the main grid, and Korea has many positive effects by constructing overseas microgrids as a country operating the emission trading scheme. Since it is not clear how to obtain load curves that is one of the inputs of the HOMER used to design a microgrid optimization plan, or it is necessary to examine whether electricity is supplied to the peak load level of the areas where have not received the electricity benefits from the viewpoint of the demand management, a methodology should be developed to know the load composition ratio and the shape of the daily load curve. In this paper, the relative coefficient and average load information for each load group obtained from the survey are used besides peak load and total average load. A mathematical model is proposed to derive the load composition ratio in the form of a Quadratic Programming and the load forecasting is performed using simple linear regression with future indicators. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed for the Philippine island region supported by Korea Energy Agency and the Asian Development Bank.
