Embedded database systems (EDBMS) based on NAND flash memories are widely adopted for logging data on sensor nodes. Since write and erase operations of a flash memory are time consuming compared to read operations and wear memory cells, it is important to reduce these operations to enhance the EDBMS performance and to extend the memory life. In this paper, we propose a delayed write scheme to archive this goal. Proposed scheme stores updated parts of database pages into delayed write records to reduce the database page writes. By doing that, it decreases write and erase operations on a flash memory. Therefore, the proposed scheme enhances the logging performance of a write-intensive EDBMS on a sensor node and extends the flash memory life.

Recently, with the advance of wireless internet and the frequent use of mobile devices, demand for LBS(Location Based Service) is increasing, and research is required on spatial indexes for the storage and maintenance of spatial data to provide efficient LBS in mobile device environments. In addition, the use of flash memory as an auxiliary storage device is increasing in order to store large spatial data in a mobile terminal with small storage space. However, the application of existing spatial indexes to flash-memory lowers index performance due to the frequent updates of nodes. To solve this problem, research is being conducted on flash-memory based spatial indexes, but the efficiency of such spatial indexes is lowered by low utilization of buffer and flash-memory space. Accordingly, in order to solve problems in existing flash-memory based spatial indexes, this paper proposed FR-Tree (Flash-Memory based R-Tree) that uses the node compression technique and the delayed write operation technique. The node compression technique of FR-Tree increased the utilization of flash-memory space by compressing MBR(Minimum Bounding Rectangle) of spatial data using relative coordinates and MBR size. And, the delayed write operation technique reduced the number of write operations in flash memory by storing spatial data in the buffer temporarily and reflecting them in flash memory at once instead of reflecting the insert, update and delete of spatial data in flash-memory for each operation. Especially, the utilization of buffer space was enhanced by preventing the redundant storage of the same spatial data in the buffer. Finally, we perform ed various performance evaluations and proved the superiority of FR-Tree to the existing spatial indexes.
Flash memory has many advantages like non-volatility and fast I/O speed, but it has also disadvantages such as not-in-place-update data and asymmetric read/write/erase speed. For the performance of flash memory storage, it is essential for the buffer replacement algorithms to reduce the number of write operations that also affects the number of erase operations. A new buffer replacement algorithm is proposed in this paper, that delays the writes of not-cold-dirty pages in the buffer cache of flash storage. We show that this algorithm effectively decreases the number of write operations and erase operations without much degradation of hit ratio. As a result overall performance of flash I/O speed is improved.

Low power issue is one of the most critical problems in the Internet of Things (IoT), which are powered by battery. To solve this problem, various approaches have been presented so far. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the power consumption by reducing the numbers of accesses into the flash memory consuming a large amount of power for on-chip software execution. Our approach is based on using cooperative logging structure to distribute the sampling overhead in single sensor node to adjacent nodes in case of rare-event applications. The proposed algorithm to identify event occurrence is newly introduced with negative feedback method by observing difference between past data and recent data coming from the sensor. When an event with need of flash access is determined, the proposed approach only allows access to write the sampled data in flash memory. The proposed event detection algorithm (EDA) result in 30% reduction of power consumption compared to the conventional flash write scheme for all cases of event. The sampled data from the sensor is first traced into the random access memory (RAM), and write access to the flash memory is delayed until the page buffer of the on-chip flash memory controller in the micro controller unit (MCU) is full of the numbers of the traced data, thereby reducing the frequency of accessing flash memory. This technique additionally reduces power consumption by 40% compared to flash-write all data. By sharing the sampling information via LoRa channel, the overhead in sampling data is distributed, to reduce the sampling load on each node, so that the 66% reduction of total power consumption is achieved in several IoT edge nodes by removing the sampling operation of duplicated data.

This paper proposes an efficient page-level mapping algorithm that reduces the erase count in the FTL for flash memory systems. By maintaining the weight for each write request in the request buffer, the proposed algorithm estimates the degree of temporal locality for each incoming write request. To exploit temporal locality deliberately for determination of hot request, the degree of temporal locality should be much higher than the reference point determined experimentally. While previous LRU algorithm treats a new write request to have high temporal locality, the proposed algorithm allows write requests that are estimated to have high temporal locality to access hot blocks to store hot data intensively. The pages are more frequently updated in hot blocks than warm blocks. A hot block that has most of invalid pages is always selected as victim block at Garbage Collection, which results in delayed erase operation and in reduced erase count. Experimental results show that erase count is reduced by 9.3% for real I/O workloads, when compared to the previous LRU algorithm.

When the PCI 2.2 bus master requests data using Memory Read command, the target device my hold PCI bus without data transfer for a long time because the target device requires time to prefetch data internally. Because the PCI bus usage efficiency and the data transfer efficiency are decreased due to this situation, the PCI specification recommends to use the Delayed Transaction mechanism to improve the performance. But the mechanism doesn't fully improve performance because the target device doesn't blow prefetch data size exactly. In this paper, we propose a new method to transfer data efficiently when the bus master reads data from the target device. The bus master informs the target device the exact read data size using prefetch request using Memory Write command. The simulation result shows that the proposed method has the higher data transfer efficiency than the Delayed Transaction about 10%.
To process transactions in fully replicated database, an atomic broadcast is mainly used. In this case of using atomic broadcast, transactions can be delayed because of the coordinating step among servers before processing the transaction. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to resolve the problem of transaction delay. In the proposed algorithm, the transactions are processed by using the optimistic method. The operations of a transaction are performed in the site that it is submitted and its write operations its updates atomically in all replicated sites. Since the serializability of transaction is ensured by checking the sequence number of transactions in the completion-inspection step.

Android platform provides a content provider and a cursor mechanism to access the internal SQLite engine. Content providers not only store and retrieve data but also make it accessible to applications. Applications can only share data through content provider, since there's no common storage area that Android packages can access. Cursor is an interface that provides random read-write access to the result set returned by a database query. However, this cursor possesses two major limitations. First, a cursor does not support a join clause among cursors, since the cursor can only access a single table in the content provider. Second, the cursor is not capable of creating user-customized field in the predefined content providers. In this paper, we propose the unified cursor architecture that merges several cursors into a single virtual cursor. Cursor translation look-aside buffer (TLB), column windowing mechanism and virtual data management are the three major techniques we have adopted to implement our structure. And we also propose a delayed synchronization method between an application and a proposed unified cursor. An application can create a user-customized field and sort multiple tables using a unified cursor on Android platform.
