  • According to Jeong Ho-seong (1999), Koreans use an average of only 20% of the 508,771 entries of the Korean standard unabridged dictionary. To establish MRD for natural language processing, it is necessary to select Korean lexical units that are used frequently and are considered as basic words. In this study, this selection process is done semi-automatically using the KAIST large corpus. Among about 220,000 morphemes extracted from the corpus of 40,000,000 eojeols, 50,637 morphemes (54,797 senses) are selected. In addition, the coverage of these morphemes in various texts is examined with two sub-corpora of different styles. The total coverage is 91.21 % in formal style and 93.24% in informal style. The coverage of 6,130 first degree morphemes is 73.64% and 81.45%, respectively.

  • In this Kdynote address, two types of information granules are considered : (ⅰ) one for set assignments of a concept descriptor and (ⅱ) the other for truthood assignment to the concept description verifier. The first is, the process which specifies the assignment of an object to a clump, a class, a group, etc., and hence defines the set membership with a relational constraint. the second is the assignment of the degree of truthood or the membership specification of the abstract concept of truthood which specifies the " veristic" constraint associated with the concept descriptor. The combination of these two distinct assignments let us generate four set and logic theories. This then leads to the concern of normal forms and their derivation from truth tables for each of these theories. In this regard, some of the fundamental issues arising in this context are discussed and certain preliminary answers are provided in order to highlight the consequences of these theories.

  • There is no single or simple answer for effective communication between laboratory technician and clinical dentist. Love-hate could be used to describe the relationship between dentists and their labs. Great lab work can make a dentists life much easier and can result in getting many referrals. However, if the lab work is not up to par and/or late, it can add stress and agony to a dentists practice. Also the opposition is right. If the preparations are calibrated, the impressions clear, and the bite registrations accurate, most labs can do their work reasonably well. Unfortunately, many cases received by labs are barely adequate, especially when it comes to reading margins, which are frequently created by the imagination of the person trimming the dies. In other words, both dentists and lab technicians need to be able to understand how each party operates so that solutions to problems can be found. Effective communication with the laboratory is critical if any degree of success is desired.

  • Various acoustic features were extracted and analyzed to estimate the inter- and intra-speaker variability of emotional speech. Tokens of vowel /a/ from sentences spoken with different modes of emotion (sadness, neutral, happiness, fear and anger) were analyzed. All of the acoustic features (fundamental frequency, spectral slope, HNR, H1-A1 and formant frequency) indicated greater contribution to inter- than intra-speaker variability across all emotions. Each acoustic feature of speech signal showed a different degree of contribution to speaker discrimination in different emotional modes. Sadness and neutral indicated greater speaker discrimination than other emotional modes (happiness, fear, anger in descending order of F-ratio). In other words, the speaker specificity was better represented in sadness and neutral than in happiness, fear and anger with any of the acoustic features.

  • This study investigated the patterns of coda deletion in spontaneous Seoul Korean speech. More specifically, the current study focused on three factors in promoting coda deletion, namely, word position, consonant type, and morpheme type. The results revealed that, first, coda deletion frequently occurred when affixes were attached to the ends of words, rather than in affixes in word-internal positions or in roots. Second, alveolar consonants [n] and [l] in the coda positions of high-frequency affixes [nɨn] and [lɨl] were most likely to be deleted. Additionally, regarding affix reduction in the word-final position, all subjects seemed to depend on this articulatory strategy to a similar degree. In sum, the current study found that affixes without primary semantic content in spontaneous speech tend to undergo the process of reduction, favoring the occurrence of specific pronunciation variants.

  • Granular sludge formation and it's activity change are the most important factors in achieving successful start-up and operation of UASB reactor. Nevertheless, the detailed mechanism is still unknown. On the basic of the experiments in laboratory-scale UASB reactor, the effect of hydrogen partial pressure on sludge granulation was evaluated. Size distribution method and specific metabolic activity of the sludge with the operation time were used as a means for estimating the degree of the sludge granulation. At the constant hydrogen loading, the granulation increased as starvation periods in hydrogen supply increased, resulting in high organic removal efficiency. It was evidient that hydrogen play very important role in granulation and sludge granulation was achieved through mutual symbiosis between hydrogen utilizing bacteria and hydrogen producing bacteria under the hydrogen dificient conditions. Key words : granular sludge, UASB reactor, hydrogen partial pressure.

  • In this past decade, industrial robot have substituted human workers successfully in certain areas, however, the applications are limited due to the shortcoming in their mechanism and control strategies. Many researchers, therefore, have focused on improving the mechanical and sensory capabilities. Developing mult-degree-of-freedom end effectors, in other words robot hands, is one of the topics that researchers have begun to improve the limitation. A set of direct drive type servo-pneumatic finger joint has been developed for a dexterous robot hand. To control the pneumatic finger joints, a prototype 4/3-way proportional control valve has been designed and tested as a preliminary, research for the control of the pneumatic finger joints. A series of experiments have been conducted to verify the performance characteristics of the valve and the conventional proportional error contral with minor-loop compensation has been used to control the anguar position of the finger joints.

  • The rapid development and diversification of technology require that firms should adjust and cope with a high degree of uncertainty regarding independent efforts in technology development. An alternative to these strategic responses is the R&D or technological collaborations among firms. There have been many researches on the reasons for and effects of these collaborative relationships; however, research examining the risks involved in the process of collaboration is lacking. The researches into essential prerequisites for successful technological collaborations have remained more or less premature despite of the increasing demand for interfirm R&D collaborations. In other words, the existing literature has mainly focused on the choice of collaborations, but has paid little attention to the processes of collaborations. This study tries to identify and integrate both success and risk factors affecting the decision making of whether collaborations are attempted or not and R&D collaboration processes. Finally, a model of interfirm collaborations is suggested and also practical implications for the firms which consider R&D collaboration with other firms are provided.

  • Recent experimental studies have shown that language-users' knowledge of the statistical characteristic of their native language plays a key role in their task performance. One specific instance of this that the current study focuses on is the effect of phonotactic probabilities on speakers' wordlikeness judgment of nonwords. In this paper, I explore the question of whether the judgment of Korean speaking subjects as to the wordlikeness of Korean nonsense words is influenced by the degree of association between two-phoneme sequences in Korean. The current results suggest that the objective measure of correlations (expressed by $r_{\phi}$ values) between an onset consonant and a vowel inside Korean syllables play an important role in Korean speakers' nonword processing. The current results additionally indicate an effect of the correlations of two-phoneme sequences including vowels and coda consonants on nonword processing. Implications of these findings for Korean speakers' learning the correlations between adjacent segments inside the syllable are discussed.
