  • The authors aimed to understand the structural relationship among lifelong education, life satisfaction, and depression in later life. For the data analysis, 4,096 older adults aged 65 and more without anti-depression treatment were subtracted from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) of the year 2012. The findings include that first, older adults' non-formal and informal learning activities influence their life satisfaction positively. Second, older adults' non-formal and informal learning activities have a negative effect on their depression. Third, older adults' depression has a negative impact on their life satisfaction. Fourth, older adults' non-formal and informal learning activities decrease the degree of depression and in turn influence their life satisfaction positively, which shows depression level has a partial mediating effect. The indirect effect of informal learning was greater than that of non-formal learning. We drew practical implications based on these findings.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the activity constraints due to disability on subjective health status and daily life satisfaction among disabled, and mediating effects of subjective health status on the relationship between activity constraints due to disability and daily life satisfaction. For this purpose, the response data of 3,809 people who participated in the 5th year of the 2nd Wave of the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled (PSED) were used and analyzed. As a result, all sub-factors except for the degree of difficulties in hearing even when using hearing aids among activity constraints due to disability has a statistically significant negative effect on subjective health status, and all sub-factors has a significant negative effect on daily life satisfaction. And, subjective health status has a significant partial mediating effect on the relationship between all sub-factors except for the degree of difficulties in hearing even when using hearing aids among activity constraints due to disability and daily life satisfaction. Therefore, the level of activity constraint for the disabled should be reduced by providing systematic and differentiated customized rehabilitation programs that take into account the disability characteristics of the disabled, thereby improving the health level and social independence ability of the disabled. Furthermore, in order to improve the daily life satisfaction of the disabled, it is necessary to provide policy support such as the establishment of a community-based integrated support system for the disabled by linked rehabilitation program and health promotion program.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the subjective consciousness and life satisfaction of the elderly, and to see how depression affects this relationship. This includes a new way of thinking about the causes of the elderly's life satisfaction, not only for individual factors, but also for subjective class consciousness. For this aim, we examine the degree of subjective class consciousness, life satisfaction and depression of the elderly, and verify mediation effects of depression between subjective class consciousness and life satisfaction. This study utilized data obtained from the 5th version of the Korea Longitudinal Study on Aging 2014, and considered data from 4,222 elderly aged 65 and over. As a means of study, a structural equation model analysis was conducted. The results were as follows: First, it was confirmed that the subjective class consciousness of the elderly may influence life satisfaction. It was also confirmed that the subjective class consciousness of the elderly also affected depression and life satisfaction among the elderly. When subjective class consciousness was high, depression was low and life satisfaction was high. When depression was low, life satisfaction was high. Second, depression had the mediation effect in which subjective class consciousness affects life satisfaction. Based on these results, this author suggests practical and political issues concerning social welfare to prevent and reduce depression and increase life satisfaction through improving the subjective class consciousness of the elderly. First, policy measures should enhance social capital through housing support policies and leisure use support to enhance the subjective class consciousness of the elderly. Second, the provision of services for the elderly through the establishment of a community-based network to reduce depression should be promoted.
