  • Background: Increasing numbers of young people go to clubs. In Korea, however, no studies have been conducted regarding the exposure of club patrons to secondhand smoke. The present study was conducted to evaluate the degree of club customers' exposure to secondhand smoke. Methods: The study subjects included 10 male and 12 female non-smokers. The investigational site was a club located in Daegu. Urine samples were collected before exposure to secondhand smoke in the club and 6 hours after a 3-hour exposure. The urine cotinine levels were measured via the LC -MS/MS method. A survey was conducted to collect data regarding the subjects' smoking experiences and the degree of exposure to secondhand smoke in their daily lives. Results: The average urine cotinine level increased from 1.09 ${\mu}g/L$ to 5.55 ${\mu}g/L$ ($p$<0.05). No significant difference existed in the change in urine cotinine level between the male and female subjects. In addition, there was no significant difference in the change in urine cotinine level by the degree of exposure to secondhand smoke in daily life. Conclusions: The average urine cotinine level in all the subjects significantly increased after exposure to secondhand smoke. This is the first study on exposure to secondhand smoke in clubs; these results can be used to craft measures that reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in public places, such as clubs.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of Yoga exercise as one way of the nursing intervention on stress and health status. This study was a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pretest and posttest design. The study subjects were clinical nurses at K University hospital, in J city. Fifty one nurses were selected with 26 to a experimental group and 25 to a control group. The study data were collected from November, 2002 to January, 2003. During this period Yoga exercise was given to experimental group three times per week(one hour every time) for twelve weeks and no program was given to control group. The degree of general stress, job stress, health perception and health status was measured before and after experiment. The data were analyzed using SAS 8.1 program to obtain chi-square, paired, unpaired t-test. The results of this study are as follows. 1. After the experiment, the degree of general stress increased (t=-3.61, p=0.001) in experimental group, but in control group. There was significant difference between two groups (t=-2.10, p=0.041). However there was no significant difference in job stress between two groups and in each group (p=0.001), 2. After the experiment, the degree of health perception in experimental group increased (t=2.13, p=0.043) in control group. There was no significant difference between two groups. Health status in experimental group increased (t=3.14, 0.004) but in control group after the experiment. There was no significant difference between two groups. From the results, we are convinced that Yoga exercise is the nursing intervention that could decrease stress and promote health status in clinical nurses. Therefore Yoga exercise could be largely applied as one way of health care for nurses.

  • The object of this study is to observe the effects of magnetism on the osteoblasts using a neodymium magnet. The osteoblasts was cultured under magnetic fields of varying intensities to evaluate the effect of magnetism on the activity and alkaline phosphatase acitivty of the osteoblasts. Osteoblasts were cultured in the cell density of $10^4$ for the evaluation of cell proliferation and 105/ml for the evaluation of ALP activity under 0. 10, 100, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 gauss for 24 hour. For evaluation of osteoblast morphologic changes under magnetic, osteoblasts were observed by inverted microscope and TEM. To elucidate if IGF-receptors are increased under the magnetic field, we investigated osteoblasts by immunofluoroscence staining. The results were as follows: In the varying intensities of magnetic fields, the degree of cell proliferation was the highest in the magnetic field of 10 gauss and this gradually decreased up to 1000 gauss. In the magnetic fields stronger than 1000 gauss, the degree of the cell proliferation decreased to an even lower level than that of the control group. The ALP activity and protein synthesis showed a similar increase pattern as the degree of cell proliferation compared to the control group but showed little difference. Under the microscope, morphological change of the cells ( decrease in length and increase in roundness) were observed but no peculiarity of cell distribution could be found according to the magnetic field line. In the proper intensity of magnetic fields (10 gauss), the cultured cells showed increase in number of IGF Receptors compared to that of the control group.

  • Heterotopic abdominal homograft of canine heart was carried out in 20 pairs of dogs. Of these 12 cases were subjected as a control and 8 were subjected to immunosuppressive group. The dosage of immunosuppressive agent was 5mg/kg/day of Imuran [Azathioprine] for 3 days preoperatively, 10mg/kg on operative day and 5mg/kg/day postoperatively. For reducing the metabolic demand, the donor heart was preserved in 4degree heparinized saline solution for approximately I4 minutes. In the most of the cases, transplantation was performed with the technique of end-to-side aorto-aortic anastomosis and end-to-side pulmonary artery-inferior vena cava anastomosis at the infrarenal portion. Five out of 20 grafted dogs were survived more than one day. The longest survived 18 days in the control group and survive more than 60 days in the treated group. The survival cases were 3 out of 8[37. 5%] in the group of dogs treated with lmuran and 2`out of 12 [16.6%] in the group of non-treated. A prominent gross findings of the grafted heart was a minimal to moderate degree of dilatation of the heart with or without thrombosis in the cardiac chambers and/or anastomotic site. The case number 10, 15, and 19 showed moderate hypertrophy in grossly. The microscopic findings were as follows; 1. There were early hypersensitive histologic reactions such as interstitial edema, cellular infiltrations and early degenerative changes in the myocardium in the cases of 3 hour survival. 2. In the cases of more than 6 hours survival, organizing thrombosis of myocardial vessels, vasculitis, myocardial necrosis and lymphocyte, plasma cell, round cell infiltrations were noted. In the cases of more than 12 hours survival, the degree of these histologic changes especially in the non-treated group were more intensified than in the treated. 3. In the cases which survived more than one day, so called homograft specific histologic changes were milder in the immunosuppressive group compared with the control. 4. All the host hearts showed no evidence of pathologic findings histologically. Among the homologous canine cardiac transplantation tissue reaction, was milder and suvival time longer in the group treated with immunosuppressive drug.

  • Various meleorologlcal dada obtained by SODAR system in shoreline area surrounding Boryung power plant have been analysed to investigate atmospheric diffusibility. Important conclusion may be summarized as follows; (i) Stability classification scheme based on co (standard deviation of wind direction in degree for averaging time of 1 hour) appears to evaluate certain atmospheric velocity and : indicate horizontal mean wind speed. Thus different scheme for stability classification seems to be preferable in order to appropriately estimate lateral and vertical dispersion coefficients cy and cz, respectively. (ii) As a result of comparisons between 3 available schemes for estimating of mixing height, best one turned out to be the double height scheme where height corresponds to maximum cw.

  • For decompose carbon dioxide, manganese oxide was synthesized with $0.25M-MnSO_{4}{\cdot}nH_{2}O$ and 0.5M-NaOH by coprecipitation. We made magnetite deoxidized manganese oxide by hydrogen reduction for 1hour at $330^{\circ}C$. We investigated characteristics of catalyst, hydrogen reduction degree and decomposition rate of carbon dioxide. The structure of the hausmannite certified spinel type. The specific surface area of synthesized hausmannite and deoxidized hausmannite were $22.36m^{2}/g$, $33.56m^{2}/g$ respectively. The decomposition rate of $CO_{2}$ of deoxidized hausmannite was 57%.

  • Anion-exchange porous hollow-fiber membranes with a thickness of about 1.2 mm and a pore size of about $0.30{\mu}m$ were used as a supporting matrix to immobilize cycloisomaltooligosaccharide glucanotransferase (CITase). CITase was immobilized to the membrane via anion-exchange adsorption and by subsequent enzymatic cross-linking with transglutaminase, the amount of which ranged from 3 to 110 mg per g of the membrane. The degree of enzyme multilayer binding was equivalent to 0.3 to 9.8. Dextran, as the substrate, was converted into seven- to nine-glucose-membered cycloisomaltooligosaccharides (CI-7, -8, and -9) at a maxi mum yield of $28\%$ in weight at a space velocity of 10 per hour during the permeation of $2.0(w/w)\%$ dextran solution across the CITase-immobilized porous hollow-fiber membrane.
