  • Degree of heterosis and gene distributions of several agronomic characters of rice were studied with F$_1$ and F$_2$ generations of 9-parent partial diallel cross in 1983-1984. Degree of heterosis was greater in F$_1$ hybrids than F$_2$ hybrids for culm length, panicle length and number of panicle and the heterobeltiosis could be observed in culm length and number of panicle from several crosses. Incomplete dominance was exhibited by culm length, panicle length and number of panicle in F$_1$ and F$_2$ generations.

  • In order to simulate wake of stator and a gas turbine engine's balde row, acryl cylinder and a linear turbine cascade were used respectively in this study. Experimental of heat transfer distributions was done on the passage endwall and blade suction surface. Temperature distributions on the experimental regions were obtained through image processing system by using the cholesteric type liquid crystal which has chain structure of metyl$(CH_3)$. To represent the degree of heat transfer, dimensionless St number was used. The results show that heat transfer on the blade suction surface was increased due to the wake from the cylinder and was decreased as the distance between cylinder row and blade row increases. Because of groth of passage vortex, heat transfer distributions on the trailing edge area showed triangular shape which was little changed with wake. On the other hand, heat transfer on the passage endwall was decreased due to the wake from cylinder. As the distance between cylinder row and blade row increases, heat transfer was more decreased.

  • Influences of stiffness distributions on hydroelastic responses of very large floating structures (VLFS) are studied in this paper. Hydroelastic responses are calculated by direct method employing higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM) for fluid analysis and finite element method (FEM) for structure analysis. In structural analysis using FEM, Mindlin plate elements are used. An 1 km-long VLFS with uniform stiffness and modified VLFS with varying stiffness distributions are considered in numerical analysis. Responses of VLFS increase in flexible parts and decrease in stiff Parts. Reduction degree of displacements of VLFS with stiffened center is larger than that of VLFS with stiffened sides.

  • Energy-trapped thickness vibrations of piezoelectric substrates are utilized in fabricating resonators and filters which have their operating frequencies in HF band. Normalized particle displacement distributions of the fundamental thickness shear vibration mode and overtone modes into the thickness direction in energy-trapped resonators and double-coupled filters were obtained by solving the wave equation and calculating the solved equations. These results show that as the number order of the harmonic mode in a energy-trapped resonator becomes larger, the degree of energy-trapping in the resonator increase, and if the conditions for energy-trapping become sufficiently weak, the energy-trapping effect of the harmonic mode which has the lower order disappears the earlier. Above simulation results were proved by the experiments.

  • We have fuzzy hypotheses testing from Bayesian statistics with ideas from fuzzy sets theory to generalize Bayesian methods both for samples of fuzzy data and for prior distributions with non-precise parameters. Appling the principle of agreement index, the posterior odds ratio in the favor of hypotheses $H_0$ is equal to product of the fuzzy odds ratio and the fuzzy likelihood ratio. If the Posterior odds ratio exceeds the grade judgement, we accept the hypothesis $H_0$ for the degree.

  • This article proposes a variable sampling interval (VSI) $\bar{X}$ control chart using weighted standard deviation (WSD) method for skewed populations. The WSD method decomposes the standard deviation of a quality characteristic into upper and lower deviations and adjusts control limits and warning limits of a control chart in accordance with the direction and degree of skewness. A control chart constant is derived for estimating the standard deviation of skewed distributions with the mean of sample standard deviations. The proposed chart is compared with the conventional VSI $\bar{X}$ control chart under some skewed distributions. Simulation study shows that the proposed WSD VSI chart can control the in-control average time to signal (ATS) as an adequate level better than the conventional VSI chart, and the proposed chart can detect a decrease in the process mean of a quality characteristic following a positively skewed distribution more quickly than the standard VSI chart.

  • The chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process is a method of planarizing semiconductor wafers with a high degree of success. However, fundamental mechanisms of the process are not fully understood. Several theoretical analyses have been introduced, which are focused on kinematics, von Mises stress distributions and hydrodynamic lubrication aspects. This paper is concerned with hydrodynamic lubrication theory as the chemical mechanical planarization model; the three-dimensional Reynolds equation is applied to predict slurry film thickness and pressure distributions between the pad and the wafer. This paper classifies geometry of wafer into 3 types and focuses on the differences between them.

  • We measure the degree of polarization of the lunar regolith to map the distributions of the age and the particle size. We use a 12cm refracting telescope with a 2k-square pixel color CCD (R band) and a polarization filter. The angular resolution obtained is 3.02 km/pixel. Our goal is to obtain a map of the lunar particle size distribution on the lunar regolith and then that of the age distribution. Polarization of the light scattered by lunar surface contains information on their mean particle size. The mean particle size of the lunar surface has been decreased by continued micro-meteoroid impact over a long period. One can estimate the age of the lunar surface if the mean particle size is known. Particle sizes can be measured through observations of polarization because the mean particle size is related to the maximum polarization and albedo. The age and the particle size of the lunar regolith can give vital information for the future lunar exploration.

  • The purpose of the present study is first to refine the mathematical material models for moisture and temperature distributions in early-age concrete and then to incorporate those models into finite element procedure. The three dimensional finite element program developed in the present study can determine the degree of hydration, temperature and moisture distribution in hardening concrete. It is assumed that temperature and humidity fields are fully uncoupled and only the degree of hydration is coupled with two state variables. Mathematical formulation of degree of hydration Is based on the combination of three rate functions of reaction. The effect of moisture condition as well as temperature on the rate of reaction is considered in the degree of hydration model. In moisture transfer, diffusion coefficient is strongly dependent on the moisture content in pore system. Many existing models describe this phenomenon according to the composition of mixture, especially water to cement ratio, but do not consider the age dependency. Microstructure is changing with the hydration and thus transport coefficients at early ages are significantly higher because the pore structure in the cement matrix is more open. The moisture capacity and sink are derived from age-dependent desorption isotherm. Prediction of a moisture sink due to the hydration process, i.e. self-desiccation, is related to autogenous shrinkage, which may cause early-age cracking in high strength and high performance concrete. The realistic models and finite element program developed in this study provide fairly good results on the temperature and moisture distribution for early-age concrete and correlate very well with actual test data.

  • The probability distribution of ichthyoplankton is important for enhancing the precision of sampling while reducing unnecessary surveys. To estimate the ichthyoplankton detection proportion (IDP) and its margin of error (ME), the monitoring information of the chub mackerel's (Scomber japonicus) ichthyoplankton presence-absence sampling data has been were collected over approximately 30 years (from 1982 to 2011) in the Korean coastal seas. Based on the computed spatial distributions of the mackerel's IDP and ME, the confidence interval (CI) range, defined as 2 ME, decreases from approximately 80% to 40% as the sample size n increases from 4 to 24 and the ME is approximately 40% in the typical (seasonal survey) case n = 4 per year. The IDP and ME off Jeju Island are relatively high at the 0.5-degree smoothing level. After increasing the spatial smoothing level to 1.0-degree, the ME decreased, and the spatial distribution pattern also changed due to the over-smoothing effects. In this study, the 0.5-degree smoothing is more suitable for the distribution pattern than the 1.0-degree smoothing level. The area of the high IDP and the low ME on the mackerel's ichthyoplankton was similar to the estimated spawning ground in the Korean peninsula. This information could contribute to enhancing for the spawning ecology surveys.
