This paper deals with the analysis of rock slope stability using the distinct element method. This method consists in analysis of the interaction of discrete block assemblage delimited by elementary joints, which permits to consider the heterogeneous, anisotropic and discontinuous features of the rock mass. In particular, we were able to show that this method, and especially the BRIG3D software, is an outstanding tool which gives informations of greatest interest in order to analyze the toppling mechanisms. We have confirmed the fundamental role of the rock mass structure with different simulations. In the case of toppling phenomena, the essential parameter is the dip of major discontinuities. It has an influence on the intensity and volume of deformations. The anisotropic and heterogeneous features of the rock mass play also an important role. It is proved by insertion of thick rock bars in the structure or varying rock block sizes in the mass. These models modified considerably the stress distribution and the deformation distribution. Finally, we have analyzed the influence of mechanical parameters such as friction angle and tangential stiffness.
Temperature variation according to space and time on the inner parts of engineering constructions(e.g.: dam, slope) can be a basic information for diagnosing their safety problem. In general, as constructions become superannuated, structural deformation(e.g.: cracks, defects) could be occurred by various factors. Seepage or leakage of water through these cracks or defects in old dams will directly cause temperature anomaly. Groundwater level also can be easily observed by abrupt change of temperature on the level. This study shows that the position of seepage or leakage in dam body can be detected by multi-channel temperature monitoring using thermal line sensor. For this, diverse temperature monitoring experiments for a leakage physical model were performed in the laboratory. In field application of an old earth fill dam, temperature variations for water depth and for inner parts of boreholes located at downstream slope were measured. Temperature monitoring results for a long time at the bottom of downstream slope of the dam showed the possibility that temperature monitoring can provide the synthetic information about flowing path and quantity of seepage of leakage in dam body.
In lateral ground flow, slope stability, and land slide problems, H-piles have often been used, on a horizontally deforming ground, to prevent the failure of mass of soil in a downward and outward movement of a slope. Here, theoretical equations are derived to estimate the lateral force, assuming that the Mohr-Coulomb's plastic states occur in the ground, just around H-piles. In this study, some model experiments were performed to check the lateral forces determined from theoretical equations, using several pile widths, heights and various interval ratios between H-piles for sand specimens. The solution of the theoretical equation, derived from previous studies, showed reasonable characteristics for constants of soil, as well as for the interval, widths, and heights of H-Pile.
In the current study, the effect of small surface defects in the starting material including roughness, indentations, or scratches, which are perpendicular to the direction of drawing, on the product quality is investigated using the finite element method. An axisymmetric defect is assumed. Such defects are defined by a cylindrical defect area and two tapered regions connecting the defect area to the non-defective area of the material. Various conditions for these initial surface defects are considered, including defect depth, defect slope and defect length. To describe the plastic deformation of the defect in detail during the simulation, local remeshing is applied. Based on the finite element results, defect disappearance maps were generated. It was found that defect disappearance is significantly dependent on the defect depth and the defect length coupled with the defect slope.
A geophysical survey was undertaken at Wiri area, Andong, to delineate subsurface structure and reveal the fault zone nearby which heaving of road and subsidence of slope occurred in 1997, especially in the heavy rainy season. Electrical resistivity methods of dipole-dipole array profiling and Schlumberger array sounding and seismic methods of refraction and reflection were performed for the mapping of clay layer, which was interpreted to be the major factor among the reasons of slope deformation. The clay layer was characterized by lower electrical resistivities (< $100{\Omega}{\cdot}m$) and lower seismic velocities (<400 m/s), respectively. The results of electrical and seismic surveys showed that subsidence of slope was probably associated with sliding of wet clay on 18SW/NNW trending fault plane, while heaving of road was probably caused by upward movement of the wet clay through subvertical NNE trending fault.

Landslide of the Whanpyeong Mountain which was occurred at Busan Metropolitan City in 1999 belongs to the category of plane failure. Automatic monitoring system to measure horizontal displacement, pore pressure change and load change has operating from reconstruction stage for evaluating rock slope stability (August, 2000$\~$Feburuary, 2002). As a result of the analysis on the monitoring performance data, it is suggested that infiltrated rain water from pound surface discharges rapidly through cut-slope because pressure head of water decreases rapidly after rainfall while rise of pore pressure is proportional to the amount of rain water. As a result of data analyses for inclinometers and load cells, it seems that slope is stablized be cause ground deformation is rarely detected. The areas especially similar to the study site where landslide is induced by heavy rain fall, change of pore pressure is rapidly analyzed using automatic monitoring system. Therefore, it is considered that automatic monitoring system is very effect for slope stability analysis on important cut-slopes.

Geotextiles consist of three major types of geosynthetic material (woven, non-woven and composite) and the functions of geotextiles are separation, reinforcement, filtration, drainage and as a moisture barrier. Although the many research scholar and engineer developed and established the design criteria and construction methodology, sustainable research still needed for optimum design methodology to the complicate field conditions. In this study, in-situ rainfall test performed to develop suitable filter system for sea dyke upper slope filter layer. In-situ rainfall test conducted for seven different filter system and measured the infiltration flux and pore pressure at various filter layer. Based on the test results, the double layered geotextile filter and sand transition system is most suitable for sea dyke upper filter layer because which system is effective for drainage of infiltration flow and minimize the deformation of sea dyke cover stone.

Various numerical models for predicting wave deformation have been proposed. Among them a time-dependent mild-slope equation based on the line discharges and surface-elevation changes has been widely used in the wave fields with reflective waves. If applying this model to the case of obliquely-incident waves, not only the open-sea boundary but also one of the lateral boundaries should be treated as incident boundaries. In this study, Maruyama and Kajima (1985), Copeland (1985) and Ohnaka and Watanabe (1987)'s method are reviewed and the characteristics of these methods are analyzed using e normalized wave heights, wave angels and phases obtained from the numerical experiments. It is shown that Ohnaka and Watanabe(1987)'s method provides the most adequate driving boundary is the most suitable in e wave field with a general bottom slope.
Toppling failure of a slope is defined as failure behavior accompanying the rotation of rock block which is different from other failure such as sliding along with discontinuities and so on. It generally occurs in the region that discontinuities were developed with inverse dip direction to a slope and it could play a critical role in judging stability of slope. In this study, the stability evaluation was performed about toppling failure on a jointed road cut-slope. To check the deformation behavior, numerical analysis is widely used. However common analysis programs are based on continuum model. Recently, many methods that discontinuity properties can be considered in continuum analysis are suggested. In this study, numerical analysis based on FEM(Finite Element Method) was performed using interface element applied in heterogeneous boundary to simulate effects of discontinuities.
The geology of the study area is composed mainly of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale and basalt. It is a rock that has been observed to move relatively recently through various brittle deformation and various stress fields during the recent period. To form a gentle terrain with severe crushing. The slope is located at the intersection of the Taegok Fault in the north-northeast direction and the Bukok Fault in the western north-west direction, and many faults, fault zones and fracture zones of various sizes are developed in the rock bed. In this study, the geological characteristics of the slope are investigated and the countermeasure method is suggested. It is suggested that periodical measurement and analysis should be performed by installing a measuring instrument according to each structure for safety management of the surrounding roads and grounds during construction or reinforcement by the countermeasure method for the slope of the study area.
