In the present study, a first order shear deformable Loop-subdivision triangular element which can handle transverse shear deformation of moderately thick shell and composite laminated or sandwich shells are developed. The developed element is more general than the previous one based on classical shell theory, since it includes the effect of transverse shell deformation and has standard five degrees of freedom per node. The quartic box spline function is employed as the interpolation basis function. Numerical examples for the benchmark static shell problems are analyzed to assess the performance of the developed subdivision shell element and locking trouble.
In this paper, the governing differential equations for the non-linear behavior of shear deformable variable-arc-length beams subjected to an end moment are derived. The beam model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods, respectively, are used to integrate the governing differential equations and to compute the beam's rotation at the left end of the beams. Numerical results are compared with existing closed-form and numerical solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The characteristic values of deflection curves for various load parameters are calculated and discussed.

The appropriate handling of motion artifacts is essential for clinical diagnosis in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In many cases, motion is an inherent part of MR images because it is difficult to control during MR imaging. As the motion in the human body occur in a deformable manner, they are difficult to deal with. This paper proposes a novel detection method for periodically moving regions to produce MR images with less motion artifacts. When the data is acquired by the radial trajectory, the proposed method can extract the deformable region easily using the difference in the modulated sinograms, which have different periodic phase terms. The simulation results applied to the various cases confirmed the good performance of the proposed method.
A Galerkin meshfree method is presented for analyzing shear deformable cylindrical panels. Based upon the analogy between the cylindrical panel and the curved beam a pure bending mode for cylindrical panel is rationally constructed. The meshfree approximation employed herein is characterized by an enhanced moving least square or reproducing kernel basis function that can exactly represent the pure bending mode and thus meets the requirement of Kirchhoff mode reproducing condition. The variational form is discretized using the efficient stabilized conforming nodal integration with a smoothed nodal gradient based curvature. The resulting meshfree formulation satisfies the integration constraint for bending exactness. Moreover, it is shown here that the smoothed gradient preserves several desired properties which are valid for the standard gradient obtained by direct differentiation, such as partition of nullity and reproduction of a constant strain field. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated by two benchmark cylindrical panel examples.
A high precision shear deformable triangular element has been proposed for free vibration analysis of composite trapezoidal plates. The element has twelve nodes at the three sides and four nodes inside the element. Initially the element has fifty-five degrees of freedom, which has been reduced to forty-eight by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the internal nodes through static condensation. Plates having different side ratios (b/a), boundary conditions, thickness ratios (h/a=0.01, 0.1 and 0.2), number of layers and fibre angle orientations have been analyzed by the proposed shear locking free element. Trapezoidal laminate with concentrated mass at the centre has also been analyzed. An efficient mass lumping scheme has been recommended, where the effect of rotary inertia has been included. For validation of the present element and formulation few results of isotropic trapezoidal plate and square composite laminate have been compared with those obtained from open literatures. The numerical results for composite trapezoidal laminate have been given as new results.
The new integrated CAD-CAM systems induce an increasing demand for simulation tools, which are able to simulate industrial part assembly processes by welding, gluing, riveting or bolting(more generally by fastening). Concerning fastened flexible parts, there exist no efficient computational aid on tolerance and methodology available on the field. The first part briefly presents the approach method based on the finite element method for TADA(Tolerance Analysis of Deformable Assemblies). The second part compares the results obtained by simulation using the commercial FEM code with the measurements. The principal elements of dispersion have been identified and studied on an experimental basis in order to test the robustness of the TADA model. This has enabled us to verify the model's possibilities as regards industrial constraints such as the use of incompatible meshes or the use of triangular elements and so on.
Various 2D Shape deformation techniques has been presented recently. Concerning intuitive control of deformation, gradient domain 2D deformation techniques have an advantage over FFD(Free-form deformation) approaches, since they can deform objects with less control points. However, semantic shape properties such as thickness or length are difficult to handle in these approaches due to they treat the whole shape as a simple flat shape without structural meaning. In this paper, we propose a 2D shape deformation algorithm that deforms shapes using thin, deformable skeletal structure called freeform deformation axis (FDA). This concept separates the target shape and the deformable structure and thus enables user to manipulate shapes more intuitively.
An automatic face recognition(AFR) of individuals is a significant problem in the development of computer vision. An AFR consists of two major parts which are detection of face region and recognition process, and the overall performance of AFR is determined by each. In this paper, the face region is acquired using chromaticity space, but this face region is a simple rectangle which doesn´t consider the shape information. By applying deformable templates to the face region, we can locate the position of the eyes in images. With the face region and the eye location information, more precise face region can be extract from the image. Because processing time is critical in real-time system, we use simplified eye templates and the modified energy function for the efficiency. We can get a good detection performance in experiments.
A shear-deformable finite element model (FEM) with five nodes and thirteen degrees of freedom (DOFs) for free vibrations of laminated composite beams with arbitrary lay-up is presented. This model can be capable of considering the elastic couplings among the extensional, bending and torsional deformations, and the Poisson's effect. Lagrange's principle is employed in derivation of the equations of motion, and thus the element matrices are obtained. Comparisons of the present element's results with those in experiment, available literature and the 3D finite element analysis software (ANSYS(R)) are made to show its accuracy. Some further results are given as referencing for the future studies in vibrations of laminated composite beamst.
Some unreasonable results from the use of a popular thick plate element are discovered from the analysis of a raft foundation and a pile cap in Hong Kong. To overcome the problems, the authors have developed a new shear deformable beam which can be extended to a general quadrilateral shear deformable plate. The behaviour of this new element under several interesting cases is investigated, and it is demonstrated that the new element possesses very high accuracy under different depth/span ratios, and the results from this new element are good even for a coarse mesh.
