  • This study attempted to evaluate the water repellency and drying effectiveness of linseed oil treated-solid wood at high temperature by immersion. The moisture content of green wood (Pinus densiflora) sample (above 90%) was reduced about 10% after 6 hours treatment at 150℃. When the treated samples were cut into cross section along the length, it was observed that the linseed oil penetrated into up to 20% of the sample cross section area in all locations. However, a strength loss of the specimen was not detected. The pre-drilling before linseed oil treatment was effective in reducing the defects such as checks and splits, and improved the linseed oil penetration into all samples from the surfaces. The result of water absorption test of treated-wood showed that the water repellent efficacy of treated-wood was greater than that of the control. The anti-fungal activity of treated samples using five sap stains and thee decay fungi was not detected in broad-spectrum toxic mechanism. However, decay test using white rot fungi (Tyromyces palustris) and brown rot fungi (Trametes versicolor) showed that the treated sample has a decay resistance to these two fungi.

  • We investigated the characteristics of air-and vacuum-drying heated by hot plates for 8~14cm-diameter logs or 6~12cm-thick pillars of Pinus koraiensis. And we evaluated the effects of longitudinal kerf and vacuum drying heated by hot plates. The vacuum drying times from green to 10.9~18.6% MC were 15 days, and these times were one-fifth compared to the air-drying times. The longitudinal kerfing had no significant, effect on drying rates during both air-drying and vacuum drying. But drying defects such as surface checks and V-shaped cracks were effectively prevented during air-drying and vacuum drying by longitudinal kerfing. The vacuum drying was more advantageous than air-drying for preventing of surface checks, end checks and V-shaped cracks, and especially, the vacuum dried pillars with longitudinal kerf were almost free from drying defects. In accelerated weathering conditions the resin did not exude for all specimens.

  • In cases of wooden structure and wooden house installed on the outside, metal goods used for basic connection are usually screw bolts, strainless nails and general iron nails. As metal connections on wood are directly exposed to exterior environment, friction resistibility of nails on metal connections declines and continual defects on this are generated and maintenance for it is required. However, experiments and analyses for preparing basic data for improvement of the problems have been not conducted so far and wooden structures with defects are abandoned. Accordingly, by analyzing friction resistibility of connections by each kind of woods and metal goods, the study aims to suggest to use metal goods appropriately by kinds of woods and manufacture conditions with analysis on characteristics of resistibility of extracting nails for solving such problems and to secure basic data for establishing maintenance, repair and reinforcement plans.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data for high quality timber production and efficient utilization by investigating the effect of pruning on timber quality of domestic plantation-grown Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.). The results were summarized as follows:Dead knots (unsound knots) in the pruned logs occurred more at upper parts when compared with in non-pruned ones. The numbers of knots on surface in heavily pruned trees were less than those in non-pruned trees, but there was no significant difference in moderately pruned trees. The required period to reveal clear timber surface without defects after pruning increased proportionally with the increase of knot diameter. The yield of clear lumber production increased by about 10% after 14 years from moderate pruning. The quality grade of log improved with more pruning practices. Knots appeared the most important factor in lowering the log grades.

  • Seasonal semi-greenhouse type solar-drying of 2.5cm-and 5.0cm-thick lumber of Quercus aliena Blume and Quercus variailis Blume was carried out to investigate the possibility of solar-drying of wood and to decide the active solar-drying period in Korea. In the active solar-drying period obtained solar-dehumidification, semi-greenhouse type solar-, air- and kiln-drying of 2.5cm -thick lumber of oaks were carried out to analyze drying-rates. -defects, and -yield in each drying-method and to calculate daily total absorbed solar-radiation the solar dryers. The energy balance equations were set up, considering all the energy requirements, to analyze the heat efficiencies of semi-greenhouse type solar and solar-dehumidification-dryer. In a seasonal drying the drying rate of semi-greenhouse type solar-dryer was highest in summer, and greater in fall, spring, and winter in order. Solar-drying time was 45% in summer to 50% in winter of the air-drying rime, and more serious drying-defects occurred in air-drying than in solar-drying. In the active solar-drying period. April, May, and June, the average drying rate in solar-dehumidification-drying was 1.0%/day and greater than 0.8%/day in semi-greenhouse type solar-drying. In solar-dehumidification-drying the time required to dry lumber to 10% moisture content was less than 60 days, and solar-dehumidification-drying showed the highest drying-yield, 65.01%, than the other drying methods. The daily total absorbed solar radiations were 8.51MJ on the roof collector and 6.22 MJ on the south wall collector. In the energy blance 69.48% of total energy input was lost by heat conduction through walls, roof. and floor 11.68% by heat leakage, 0.33% by heating the internal structures of the solar-dryer and 5.38% by air-venting. Therefore the heat efficiency of semi-greenhouse type solar-dryer 13.13%, was lower than that of solar-dehumidification-dryer, 14.04%. Solar-drying of lumber in Korea showed the possibility to reduce the air-drying-time in every season and the efficiency of solar-dehumidification drying was higher than that of semi-greenhouse type solar-drying.

  • The nesting of two-dimensional patterns onto a given raw sheet has applications in a number industries. It is a common problem often faced by designers in the shipbuilding, garment making, blanking die design, glass and wood industries. This paper presents a multi-stage layout approach for nesting two-dimensional patterns by using artificial intelligence techniques with a relatively short computation time. The raw material with irregular boundaries and internal defects which must be considered in various cases of nesting was also investigated in this study. The proposed nesting approach consists of two stages : initial layout stage and layout improvement stage. The initial layout configuration is achieved by the self-organizing assisted layout(SOAL) algorithm while in the layout improvement stage, the simulated annealing(SA) is adopted for a finer optimization.

  • The delamination along the annual ring on the cross-section of laminae and the bonding strength according to the tangential angle between laminae were evaluated for the production of 3-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic larch. Since there is no standard for CLT in Korea, the production and test of specimens for bonding strength followed the standard procedure of "Structural glued laminated timber" (KS F 3021). The standard specifies to exclude any measurement from the cracks of timbers resulted from drying or knots during delamination test of the glued laminated timbers. However, the failure of cross-sectional tissues along the annual rings was observed near the glue-line of all specimens during the delamination test. Because this phenomenon can generate defects in the CLT that may be exposed to various temperatures and relative humidities after the actual construction, the delamination percentage was measured by including this wood failure. As a result, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed inward was the lowest, which was around 13%, regardless of the annual ring direction of the middle lamina. On the other hand, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed outward was the highest, which was around 26%. Furthermore, end-split occurred in the outer lamina during the drying process of the boiling delamination test, which affected the delamination percentage. Therefore, the soaking delamination test was found to be more appropriate for evaluating the delamination strength of CLT. The block shear strength of larch CLT was $3.9{\pm}0.9$ MPa on average, which was 46% lower than the block shear strength requirement (7.1 MPa) of the standard, but satisfied the criteria of the block shear strength (3.5 MPa) of the European Standard (prEN 16351: 2013).

  • X-ray transit materials with straight path and the its intensity is proportional to the density of materials. Therefore, X-ray has been extensively used as a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method in various fields. This study was carried out for development of a portable X-ray CT (computed-tomography) system to detect deteriorations of wood members in buildings. Based on the results of our previous study, a procedure of CT image reconstruction was established In order to verify the applicability of developed system, CT images of three wood disks were reconstructed by newly developed procedure and compared with the prototypes. From the results of this study, it was shown that the newly developed system could be used not only to determine the shape, size, and position of defects, but also to find the density distribution in cross section of wood structure members. The density distribution may be utilized to clarify the reason of wood deterioration and to provide the preventive method on how to treat or repair wood buildings. Because it was initial stage of system development, there were some limitations concerned with measuring equipment and image reconstruction algorithm. Especially, measuring time including equipment setup time was longer and measuring accuracy was lower than we expected. Therefore, we planned some additional studies on improvement of equipment and algorithm to enhance the capability of X-ray CT system.

  • 1. Object and importance of the research. The exports of plywood are increasing annually and it has ranked first in the world market because of the high quality product developed and manufactured using modern techniques. However, it is known that the exports of the other wood products, except plywood, is inactive because of their low quality. Accordingly, to increase the exports of various wood products investigations were carried out on kiln drying techniques to improve the quality of the wood. 2. The details and scope of the research Wet wood should be kiln dried before use to prevent various drying defects such as distortion, shrinkage etc, which would develop after processing, and also wet wood is not suitable for cutting, gluing and finishing. Therefore, the kiln drying properties of lumber from such species as Persimmon, Oak, Ramin and Meranti which are used in large quantity for manufacturing exporting wood products have been studied. Also the real state of kiln drying industry in Korea was investigated. 3.
