  • In the adder design, reduction of the delay of the carry propagation or ripple is the most important consideration. Previously, it was introduced that, if a redundant number system is adopted, the carry propagation is completely eliminated, with which addition can be done in a constant time, without regarding to the count of the digits of numbers involved in addition. In this paper, a RBCD(Redundant Binary Coded Decimal) is adopted to code 0 to 11, and an efficient and economic carry-free BCD adder is designed.

  • Before the current western medicine was spreaded out in the world as the main stream, each country had treated diseases with the medicine of their own and the traditional medical books, which are so characteristic, are handed down. Considering the earnest assignment to do in Korean medical of this age and one of the tendencies of medical circles in the world is putting together the current medicine with the traditional medicine, the production and spread of the classification system for the technical books which is contained the characteristic of traditional chinese medicine, the present condition of modern chinese medicine, and the future of it, must be settled without delay. The classification system for oriental medicine section developed in the range of the simple system before the time of flowering, since then the western medicine had grew as the main current in medicine in Korea. But until now the rational and realistic classification system based on the changeable time isn't be established, so setting up one of the classification systems for medicine section, it is classified according to the principle of classification system for medicine section. Hereupon, the result was made after researching the changes of modern classification system for korean and studying on the changes of classification system for oriental medicine section of the Korean decimal classification.

Comparative study of class and division classification for the civil engineering field in a library classification system (토목공학분야 문헌정보분류법의 류.강체계 비교분석)

  • A library for the civil engineering field goes on increasing in quantity because of the growth in construction technology and the enlargement in applicable fields of civil engineering. Most of libraries and information centers in construction companies are using Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) or Korean Decimal Classification (KDC) to classify a library in civil engineering field. It is necessary for the library classification system to be equipped with a more standardized code system, which corresponds to the academical and technical classification for the civil engineering works. This study analyzes the defects of existing classification systems, and then suggests a new classes and divisions classification system, which facilitates to link academic information with technical data, for the civil engineering field. The proposed system is expected to make practical application of information classification system in the construc ion industry and to be applied for the revised edition of KDC.

Chief causes for the development of the dewey decimal classification (듀이 십진분류법의 발전요인)

  • Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) was first published in 1876. Since its first edition it has been revised, on an average, 6 years, and now it has become the widely used library classification system of which the scheme was translated in various languages. The purpose of this study is to find out the chief causes for the development of the DDC. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: 1. It allows materials to be shelved in a relative location as the collection expands. before the DDC was introduced, libraries used a fixed location for materials in which each item was assigned to a certain location set aside for a subject. 2. It is a practical system. The fact that it has survived many storms in the past hundred years and is still the most widely used classification scheme in the world today attests to its practical value. 3. The pure notation of arabic numerals is universally recognizable. People from any cultural or language background can adapt to the system easily. 4. The use of the decimal system enable infinite expansion and sub-division. And it has adaptability for use in libraries of various size and kinds because of its hierarchically expressive notation which permits varying degrees of inclusiveness and exclusiveness within its decimal structure. 5. The notation is simple and easily understood. The self-evident numerical sequence facilitates filing and shelving. And the mnemonic nature of the notation helps the readers to memorize and recognize the class numbers. 6. The relative index brings together different aspects of the same subject scattered in different disciplines. 7. We can avail of DDC numbers for specific titles easily because of its use by many central bibliographic services. 8. It is being continuously revised by a permanent office established in the library of congress in 1933. This office has been responsible for editing all editions of the DDC since the 16th (1958). And the periodic revision at regular intervals ensures the currentness of the scheme. 9. It has adaptability both for conventional (manual) shelf or classed catalogue analysis and also, through its meaningful nation, for retrieval through mechanization and computerized systems.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and identify the characteristics in the current library classification research, and to provide suggestions for the future in this area. This study covers the published studies in library classification from 2004 to 2013. They include the research on Korean Decimal Classification (KDC), Dewey Decimal Classification and others. The results show that the main purpose in those studies is to improve current KDC system. A suggestion is provided in this study to concentrate on specific classification systems for school libraries and small libraries, for digital collections.

  • Notes in library classification systems are inevitable tools for creating and building of classification numbers. The purposes of this study are to make better notes in Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) by analyzing and comparing notes in other library classification system and to assign the most appropriate classification numbers based upon the better notes. In order to achieve these purposes, analyzing notes in Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC) and KDC was carried. And the comparison of notes used in 000 Computer science, information, general works in DDC and KDC was done. Based upon these analysis, additional notes and their various forms were suggested.

  • Objective of this research is to point out problems of geographic division structure in current Korean Decimal Classification System and provide solutions. For this purpose key classification methods were divided to decimal and non-decimal classification methods and analyzed for geographical division principles. In addition, national institutes regional division standards from Korea, USA and Japan were researched. Through these analysis, we provided suggestions to improve the table of geographical division in KDC4 including public institutions administrative district classification structure relations and consistency, and other regional divisional standards (proposal) instead of typical administrative district reflecting various geographical conditions.

  • This study aims to compare the 21th edition of Dewey Decimal Classification and the 4th edition of Korean Decimal Classification. Several categories are used for analyzing those classification systems. The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of two schedules with some examples and to analyze important categories of them and to find out the problems of them and also to provide possible suggestions for the improvement of the Korean Decimal Classification System in 21th century.

A Study of the Application of Relative Location System and Minute Classification System in the DDC (DDC의 상관식 배가법 적용과 분류체계 세분화에 대한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to understand the application of relative location system and minute classification system in the DDC and to identify the effect of the relative location system and minute classification system during the late of 19th century. In order to achieve the objective, four main investigation areas were chosen: relative location system, minute classification system, and DDC influence to other libraries and classification systems. First, DDC applied a relative location system revolutionarily instead of a fixed location system for arranging books on the shelves, so it opened the period of modern library classification systems. Second, it used a minute classification system, and could classify books which had minute subjects. Third, it applied form to a criterion for dividing divisions and sections, so it helped for classifying books. Fourth, it used a numerical decimal system as a classification system, then people could use it economically and practically. Last, DDC influenced modern classification system such as the Expansive Classification and the Subject Classification etc. DDC is a suitable library classification system for the needs of the times, and it is a practical classification system for each library.

A Study on Modifications and Expansions of Area Divisions of Korea in Auxiliary Table of Dewey Decimal Classification (듀이십진분류법의 지역 보조표에서 한국 지역 구분의 수정 전개 방안에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to analyze and compare the structures of auxiliary tables regarding places - for example, Korea using several decimal classification systems such as DDC, UDC, KDC and NDC. For each auxiliary table, the codes were described in detail and the special characteristics were discussed. The common characteristics and the different aspects of different decimal classification systems were investigated as well as divisions of Korea in Korean Wikipedia and an administrative district classification system. This study suggests a new basic summary for the expansion of codes of Korea in auxiliary table in DDC with its principles and options and it will be useful for revising process of many decimal classification systems.
