  • This study investigated the use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) over a two-decade period on public roads, focusing on the electromagnetic characteristics of the pavement dielectrics and attenuation. From the results, a typical range of characteristic value, influencing factors, and a correction method were suggested. The typical dielectrics of asphalt pavements were 4-7, as measured by an air-coupled 1 GHz GPR antenna. The dielectrics of concrete pavements were very large in the early age, but were drastically reduced with ageing. Ten years on, collection was in the range of 6-12. The dielectrics were proportional to the relative humidity (R.H.) of the atmosphere. The effects were reduced to one eighth with an overlay. Attenuation generally increased with thickness of the road layer, and also increased where there was damage. The GPR results could also vary depending on the weather conditions as well as on the characteristics of the GPR equipment, even at the same frequency. Therefore, GPR surveys should be performed on road surfaces without debris on a single, fine day. The reliability of the GPR analysis could be improved by cores and equipment calibration with other non-destructive test surveys.

  • Plant residues serve as substrates for the proliferation and overwintering of plant pathogenic fungi in soil. Effects of the biocontrol fungus Trichoderma harzianum on the colonization of wheat straw by the plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium solani were investigated under different soil moisture regimes (-50 vs. -500 kPa) in non-sterile soil. T. harzianum ThzID1-M3 and/or F. solani were added along with wheat straw to non-sterile soils. ThzID1-M3, other Trichoderma species, and F. solani were monitored for a 21-day period using quantitative PCR. ThzID1-M3 reduced the colonization of F. solani on wheat straw (p < 0.05) under both moisture regimes, and F. solani reduced the colonization by ThzID1-M3 and other Trichoderma species (p < 0.05), thus suggesting competitive inhibition between ThzID1-M3 and F. solani. Colonization by ThzID1-M3 and generic Trichoderma was improved in the wet soil (p < 0.05), but colonization by F. solani did not differ between the two moisture conditions. Thus, the inhibitory effect of ThzID1-M3 was greater in the wet soil (p < 0.05). The growth competition between ThzID1-M3 and F. solani to colonize plant debris suggests that the biocontrol fungus T. harzianum may reduce the potential of the plant pathogen, F. solani, to survive and proliferate on crops.

  • This article presents an effect of deicer such as $CaCl_2$(calcium chloride) and EFD(Eco-Friendly Deicer) composed by organic acids on the survival and growth of plant. Pine and bush clover which are main natural species on the road side, and young radish and kidney bean which are cultivation species used in this test that responses of survival and growth were analyzed as grade concentration of deicers. Bush clover showed the most sensitive survival response among 4 species to the deicer. Pine growth didn't have statistical significance as the kind of deicers and concentration variation, but growths of bush clover and kidney bean showed growth inhibition in concentration more than 3% of $CaCl_2$ and EFD1. The results of survival and growth for $CaCl_2$(calcium chloride) demonstrated that young radish and pine are tolerant species and bush clover and kidney bean are sensitive species. Although EFD1 manufactured by chemical showed the negative effect on the survival and growth of plants, EFD2 made with waste compost was confirmed that it has the positive influence to the survival and growth of the both sensitive and tolerant plant species for chloride.

  • The recognitions of geometrical characteristics and occurrence conditions are very important to evaluate the land-slides in natural terrains. In this paper, the geometrical characteristics of landslides are analyzed according to a geo-logical condition in three landslides areas. The three landslides areas are classified to the geological condition. The three landslides areas are Jangheung, Sangju and Pohang. The geology of Jangheung area, Sangju area and Pohang area is gneiss, granite, and the tertiary sedimentary rock, respectively. During a heavy rainfall of $150{\sim}588mm$ in these areas, 1,582 landslides have occurred in 1998. The geometrical characteristics according to the geological condition analyzed from the investigation of these landslides. The frequency of landslide is high exceedingly above 90% of a slope attitude, while the frequency is very low below 70%. The frequency of landslide is high exceedingly between $26^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ of slope angle, while the frequency is very low below $20^{\circ}$. The size of the landslides is ranged from several tens to several hundreds The length is ranged from 5 m to 300 m, and the width is ranged from 3 m to 50 m. Also, the depth is less than 1 m. Therefore, the landslides in these areas have small width, long length and shallow depth. The type of the landslides is changed from transitional slide at the scarp to debris flow at the low part of slope.

  • Analyses of sedimentological and geochemical parameters from two radiocarbon-dated sediment cores (JM98-845-PC and JM98-818-PC) retrieved from the central part of Isfjorden, Svalbard, in the Arctic Sea, reveal detailed paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic histories over the last 15,000 radiocarbon years. The overconsolidated diamicton at the base of core JM98-845-PC is supposed to be a basal till deposited beneath pounding glacier that had advanced during the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum). Deglaciation of the fjord commenced after the glacial maximum, marked by the deposition of interlaminated sand and mud in the ice-proximal zone by subglacial meltwater discharge, and prevailed between 13,700 and 10,800 yr B.P. with enriched-terrigenous organic materials. A return to colder conditions occurred at around 10,800 yr B.P. with a drop in TOC content, which is probably coincident with the Younger Dryas event in the North Atlantic region. At this time, an abrupt decrease of TOC content as well as an increase in C/N ratio suggests enhanced terrigenous input due to the glacial readvance. A climatic optimum is recognized between 8,395 and 2,442 yr B.P., coinciding with 'a mid-Holocene climatic optimum' in Northern Hemisphere sites (e.g., the Laurentide Ice sheet). During this time, as the sea ice receded from the fjord, enhanced primary productivity occurred in open marine conditions, resulting in the deposition of organic-enriched pebbly mud with evidence of TOC maxima and C/N ratio minima in sediments. Fast ice also disappeared from the coast, providing the maximum of IRD (ice-rafted debris) input. Around 2,442 yr B.p. (the onset of Neoglacial), pebbly mud, characterized by a decrease in TOC content, reflects the formation of more extensive sea ice and fast ice, which might cause decreased primary productivity in the surface water, as evidenced by a decrease in TOC content. Our results provide evidence of climatic change on the Svalbard fjords that helps to refine the existence and timing of late Pleistocene and Holocene millennial-scale climatic events in the Northern Hemisphere.

  • The generation of construction waste has increased continuously in the recent years, becoming an important social issue. In this paper, the generation and treatment of construction waste in Korea was reviewed and a comparative analysis was performed between Korea and developed countries to suggest some efficient recycling strategies. The generation of construction waste has increased 4 times from 10 million ton/yr in 1996 to 40.3 million ton/yr in 2002. Of the construction waste generated in 2002, concrete debris waste occupied 60.4%. Approximately 14.5% of the construction waste is landfilled, 2,0% incinerated and 83.4% recycled, then the recycling rate might be relatively high. However, there is room for increasing landfill diversion. It is somewhat important to strenghten incentives for the outstanding recycling business. It is also needed to improve the recycled aggregate quality standard and impurity content standard. It is desirable to toughen the facility standard for the recycling aggregate business and the quality standard for the intermediate treatment business. Also, market for the intermediate product of the recycled aggregate should be activated. Finally, more recycling-oriented regulations governing the construction waste has to be developed with the efficient public education program.

  • Depletion of natural resources and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are an important issue which we have to solve. The recycling of waste has emerged as a global concern. In Korea, the development of cost-effective treatment and recycling technologies also need to be improved. In this study, we compared and analyzed the cost per unit of treatment and recycling of organic waste, and presented an effective recycling scheme. We investigated the current status of treatment and costs for six types of organic wastes from 80 workplaces, including organic wastewater treatment sludge, processed organic sludge, and plant residues. In addition, environmental costs for greenhouse gas reduction were calculated. It's an economic way that organic waste is composted and used as cement additives. In particular, the economic analysis was done by realistic results of the survey target companies. In conclusion, in order for reliable processing and recycling of organic wastes, wastewater treatment sludge and sewage sludge need to be classified based on hazard characteristics. Finally, technical difficulties need to be further resolved such as odors, leachate, and debris on recycling organic wastes.

  • Since the decommissioning of nuclear plants and facilities, large quantities of slightly contaminated concrete waste have been generated. In Korea, the decontamination and decommissioning of the KRR-1, 2 at the KAERI have been under way. And concrete waste was generated about 800 drums of 200 L. The conditioning of concrete waste is needed for final disposal. The concrete waste is conditioned as follows: mortar using coarse and fine aggregates is filled void space after concrete rubble pre-placement into 200 L drum. Thus, this research has developed an optimizing mixing ratio of concrete waste, water, and cement and has evaluated characteristics of a cement waste form to meet the requirements specified in disposal site specific waste acceptance criteria. The results obtained from compressive strength test, leaching test, thermal cycling test of cement waste forms conclude that the concrete waste, water, and cement have been suggested to have 75:15:10wt% as the optimized mixing ratio. Also, the compressive strength of cement waste form was satisfied that including fine powder up to maximum 40wt% in concrete debris wastes about 75%. As a result of scale-up test, the mixture of concrete waste, water, and cement is 75:10:15wt% meet the satisfied compressive strength because the free water increased with and increased in particle size.

  • Inflammation is a protective response to infection or injury. However, prolonged inflammation can contribute to the pathogenesis of many diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. Recent studies have shown that activated macrophages, inflammatory effector cells, can react to tissue insults in a polarized manner, in which their phenotypes are polarized into two major subtypes, categorized as M1 or M2. Classical M1 activation involves the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$, and free radicals, while M2 or alternative activation is an anti-inflammatory phenotype involved in homeostatic processes, such as wound healing, debris scavenging, and the dampening of inflammation via the production of very low levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and high levels of anti-inflammatory mediators, including IL-10. As part of our ongoing effort to isolate anti-inflammatory compounds from seaweeds, we investigated the effects of phlorotannins isolated from the brown alga Ecklonia stolonifera on macrophage polarization. Mouse peritoneal macrophages were treated with various concentrations of the extracts, and real-time RT-PCR analyses were performed to examine the expression of polarization markers: IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, and TNF-${\alpha}$ for M1 and arginase-1, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-${\gamma}$, found inflammatory zone-1 (Fizz-1), chitinase 3-like 3 (Ym1), and$Kr{\ddot{u}}ppel$-like factor 4 (Klf-4) for M2. The pretreatment of cells with eckol, dieckol, and phlorofucofuroeckol-A (PFF-A), isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of E. stolonifera ethanolic extract, potentiated the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype of the macrophages. These results indicate that phlorotannins derived from E. stolonifera can be used to enrich macrophages with markers of the M2 anti-inflammatory state.

  • Inactive space objects are usually rotating and tumbling as a result of internal or external forces. KOREASAT 1 has been inactive since 2005, and its drift trajectory has been monitored with the optical wide-field patrol network (OWL-Net). However, a quantitative analysis of KOREASAT 1 in regard to the attitude evolution has never been performed. Here, two optical tracking systems were used to acquire raw measurements to analyze the rotation period of two inactive satellites. During the optical campaign in 2013, KOREASAT 1 was observed by a 0.6 m class optical telescope operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The rotation period of KOREASAT 1 was analyzed with the light curves from the photometry results. The rotation periods of the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite ASTRO-H after break-up were detected by OWL-Net on April 7, 2016. We analyzed the magnitude variation of each satellite by differential photometry and made comparisons with the star catalog. The illumination effect caused by the phase angle between the Sun and the target satellite was corrected with the system tool kit (STK) and two line element (TLE) technique. Finally, we determined the rotation period of two inactive satellites on LEO and geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) with light curves from the photometry. The main rotation periods were determined to be 5.2 sec for ASTRO-H and 74 sec for KOREASAT 1.
