  • A substituted diphenyl ether herbicide(MC-4379) was studied on the decomposition by some environmental factors; sunlight, microorganisms, and the crude enzyme in rice plant extract. All the decomposition products were confirmed by means of TLC, GLC, and IR. The parent compound and the decomposition products were put to the test for the effect on the growth of some plants. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Photolysis Amino-MC-4379, 2,4-dichloro-3'-carboxyl-4'-nitrodiphenyl ether, Nitrofen, 2,4-dichloro-3'-carboxyl-4'-amino-diphenyl ether, amino-Nitrofen, 3-carboxymethyl-4-nitrophenol, p-nitrophenol, p-aminophenol, etc. were confirmed as photoproducts, in addition to a relatively small amount of an unknown compound. It was confirmed that the solution-phase photolysis of MC-4379 was accelerated much more by the aid of a photosensitizer benzophenone. 2. Degradation by the crude extract of germinating rice seeds Nitrofen was confirmed as a major degradation product, in addition to a relatively small amount of and unknown compound. Most of the parent compound remained unchanged. 3. Degradation by microorganisms Nitrofen and amino-MC-4379 were confirmed as the major products. in addition to a small amount of an unknown compound. 4. The germinating rice seeds and soybean were grown in the 1,000 ppm emulsions of some chemicals, respectively. The effect on rice plant growth was in the inhibitory order of p-nitrophenol > C-6989> Nitrofen > amino-Nitrofen > MC-4379. The effect on soybean was in the order of Nitrofen > amino-Nitrofen > MC-4379. Two weeds, Amantus blitum and Setaria viridis were grown in the 500 ppm emulsions containing the compounds, respectively. After incubation for 3 days, it was observed that all the shoots had been dead.

  • The aim of this research was to evaluate the biotic environments based upon the community pattern of demersal fishes in the Masan bay which is heavily polluted area in the southern part of Korea. The baited traps or bottom gillnet sampled bottom fishes at four sites totally 14 tunes from March 1994 to December 1996 with 2~3 months interval. The baited trap caught 0~ 10 species which were mainly starfish, crabs, conger eel, rockfish, or blenny with 0~50 individuals per a trap. Small crab(Atergatis sp.) was significantly dominant in the S1 site, most heavily polluted area, and starfish(Asterias sp. and/or Asterina sp.) in the other three sites. There was no animals at the S1 site in the March and July in 1994 and August in 1996. The gillnets caught 0~7 species which were mainly mantis shrimp, jellyfish, flounder, starfish, crabs, or sea weeds with 0~30 individuals per a pannel of bottom gillnet. Jellyfish was significantly dominant in the S1 site and mantis shrimp in the all four sites. There was no animals in the July 1994 at S1 site and in the August and December 1996 at S4 site. But at the August in 1995 or 1996 in the S1 site, the bottom gillnets caught mackerel, anchovy, gizzard-shad or mullet which was dead all. The species diversity index of samlings by trap or gillnet showed less than 1.0 in the 80% of the totally 56 samplings. This means that the stability of demersal fishes' community is very low owing to the poor biotic environments. But most of fishes living at Masan bay appeared well fitting with the heavily polluted environments. And some fishes, like mackerel, anchovy, gizzard-shad or mullet migrated into polluted Masan bay with the seasonal or annual fluctuation.

  • In inland aquaculture, a lot of fishes often died cause of touch of L. carteri which is attached on the net cage. In this works, the experiment were carried out on classification of species, toxin test, and extermination with some chemicals. A bryozoa from net cage in lake Okjeong is classified into the Phylactolaemata, Lophopodella carteri Hyatt. A bryozoa broke out firstly on the 30th of June with water temperature up to $31^{\circ}C$ and it reattached on the net with water temperature below $30^{\circ}C$. Size of bryozoa colony is about $0.8{\times}0.6{\sim}1.7{\times}1.5cm$. Water column of attachment was 0~5m and the peak is 2~3m. In toxin test on the israeli carp, goldfish and catfish touched with bryozoa for 1 minute at $25^{\circ}C$ of water temperature, a dead fish appeared at 20 minutes after touched. Mortality was 90% for israeli carp and 100% for goldfish at 100 minuties after touched, but catfish was not died at all. It was supposed that the toxin is from nematocyst being around tentacles and this toxin act a deadly poison on a israeli carp and goldfish. In extermination test, the bryozoa treated with 300ppm of formalin, 5% of sodium chloride, 5ppm of malachite green, 200ppm of potassium permanganate, 1000ppm of potassium iodide, 10ppm of DDVP for minute respectively, all of them were not effected.

  • Background & Objectives: Frameless fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy(FFSRT) is a modification of stereotactic radiosurgery(SRS) with radiobiologic advantage of fractionation without losing mechanical accuracy of SRS. Local recurrence of head and neck cancer at or near skull base benefit from reirradiation. Main barrier to successful palliation is dose limitation secondary to normal tissue tolerance. We try to evaluate the efficacy and safety of FFSRT as a new modality of reirradaton in these challenging patients. Materials & Methods: Seven patients with recurrent head & neck cancer involving at or near skull base received FFSRT from September 1995 to November 1997. Six patients with nasopharyngeal cancer had received induction chemotherapy and curative radiation therapy. One patient with maxillary sinus cancer had received total maxillectomy and postoperative radiation therapy as a initial treatment. Follow-up ranged from 11 to 32 months with median of 24 months. Three of 7 patients received hyperfractionated radiation therapy(1.1-1.2Gy/fraction, bid, total 19.8-24Gy) just before FFSRT. All patients received FFSRT(3-5Gy/fraction, total 15-30Gy/5-10fractions). Chemotherapy(cis-platin $100mg/m^2$) were given concurrently with FFSRT in four patients. Second course of FFSRT were given in 4 patients with progression or recurrence after initial FFSRT. Because IF(irregularity factor; ratio of surface area of target to the surface area of sphere with same volume as a target) is too big to use conventional stereotactic RT using multiple arc method for protection of radiation damage to critical normal tissue, all patients received FFSRT with conformal method using irregular static ports. Results: Five of 7 patients showed complete remission in follow-up CT &/or MRI. Three of these five patients who developed marginal, in-field, and out-field recurrences, respectively. Another one of complete responders has been dead of G-I bleeding without evidence of local recurrence. One partial responder who showed progressive disease 15 months after initial FFSRT has received additional FFSRT, and then he is well-being with symptomatic improvement. One minmal responder who showed progression of locoregional disease 9 months after $1^{st}$ FFSRT has received 2nd FFSRT, and then he is alive with stable disease. Five of 7 case had showed direct invasion to skull base and had complaint headache and various symptoms of cranial nerve involvement. Four of these five case showed improvement of neurologic symptoms after FFSRT. No significant neurologic complicaltion related to FFSRT was observed during follow-up periods. Tumor volumes were ranged from 3.9 to 50.7 cc and surface area ranged from 16.1 to $114.9cm^2$. IF ranged from 1.21 to 1.74. The average ratio of volume of prescription isodose shell to target volume was 1.02 that indicated the improvement of target coverage and dose distribution with FFSRT with conformal method compared to target coverage with FFSRT with multiple arc method. Conclusion: Our initial experience suggests that FFSRT with conformal method was relatively effective and safe modality in the treatment of recurrent head and neck cancer involving at or near skull base. Treatment benefit included good palliation of symptoms and reasonable radiographic response. However, more experience and additional follow-up are needed to better assess its ultimate role in treating these challenging patients.

  • An experiment was carried out to find out the effects of water foxtail on weed control and rice yield as well as on the reduction of nitrogen application in no tillage transplanted paddy field. Paddy field was dominated by water foxtail whose soil covering degree was adjusted from 8 to 6 by treatment of paraquat (70 l /10a of solution diluted by 1, 000 times). Thirty five-day old seedling was mechanically transplanted and reduced nitrogen, 80% of conventional application was applied at the paddy field. The higher failure in seedling stand was observed at higher degree of soil covering by water foxtail. The failure of seedling stand with covering degree of 8(no paraquat) was 37.4%, while that of covering degree of 6(paraquat-treated) was 12.3%. However, the seedling stand failure was completely recovered at covering degree of six at two weeks after transplanting. The mechanical transplanting made water foxtail in the paddy field fall on the ground whose panicle part was recovered from falling sometimes after transplanting and whole plant died with slow scenesence untill the late of June. But the water foxtail affected by paraquat produced the new panicle from uppernode of stem with dead leaves at early of June and it become die slowly untill the early of July. Though several rice field weeds were observed in the order of Echinochloa crusgallis, Cyperus serotinus, Lemma paucicostata during the active tillering stage of rice, the value of weed control due to the dominance of water foxtail was 77~78%. The death and subsequent decay of water foxtail during the active tillering stage of rice induced the soil reduction which again defect the growth of rice root. The more vigerous rice growth was observed in the plot dominated with water foxtails, than control plot. The yields of rice in the water foxtail (degree 6) plot was 629kg per l0a as brown rice, the same as that of control plot. In conclusion, the no-tillage transplanting with control of covering degree of water foxtail (to degree 6) was effective in reduction of input cost such as herbicide and nitrogen fertilizer, as well as weed control without reduction of rice yield.

  • In this study in order to know the behavior of mineral nutrients from forage plant to soil in a grassland ecosystem, the leaching of minerals (K, Mg, Ca, N and P) from air-dried (dead) plant body was investigated by putting orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) hay on meadow during a month with seasonal changes. The results obtained were as follows; 1) The K content of the forage, not stable during the experimental seasons, tended to decrease in the summer of 1986, while the Mg and Ca contents increased in the summer. The reason might be a different response (solubility or leaching liability) of the monovalent mineral (K) and divalent ones (Mg and Ca) in the forage to rainfall. 2) The percentage of P to the initial amount in the forage showed larger decrease in a rainy period (Feb.~Mar., 1986) and during the rainy summer (May to July). The P component of the forage might be easily leached with water. 3) The percentage of the four minerals (Ca, N, Mg, K) remained the least in the period of (Jun.~Jul., 1986), 4) Though the percentage of remained Mg and N of the forage varied very similarly, the percentage of remained N was higher than that of Mg during periods before summer (January to May), while after the period the ratio of the Mg seemed to be higher than that of the N (June to December), 5) During the periods until (May~Jun., 1986) the percentage of remained K and P of the forage varied in very similar pattern, and the order of remained mineral was as follows; $Ca>N{\geq}Mg>P=K$. But from the period of (Jun-Jul) the ratio of P remained in the forage increased nearly up to the ratio of N, and the order was as follows; $Ca>Mg{\geq}N{\geq}P>K$.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate patients' preferences on receiving life-sustaining treatments (LST) and to analyze the relationship between patients' characteristics and LST selection. We also examined any discrepancy between LST patients' choices regarding medical intervention and actual medical intervention given/not given within 48 hours before death. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed from March 1, 2008 to August 31, 2008 in the Palliative Care Unit of Korea University Hospital. Electric medical records (EMR) of 102 hospice cancer patients were reviewed, and 74 patients with Glasgow coma scale (GCS) ${\geq}$10 at the time of signing the advance medical directives (AMD) were selected for the first analysis. Then, patients alive at the end of this study, transferred to other hospitals or dead within 48 hours were excluded, and the remaining 42 patients were selected for the second analysis. Results: Preferred LST included antibiotics, total parenteral nutrition, tube feeding, transfusion, and laboratory and imaging studies. The relationship between patients' characteristics and LST could not be analyzed due to skewed preferences. LST chosen at the time of signing the AMD and actual medical intervention given/not given in the last 48 hours showed discrepancy in most cases. Conclusion: When making AMD in hospice cancer patients, it is important to consider the time and possibility of changing the choices. Above all, patients must fully understand the AMD. Thus, LST should always be provided with careful consideration of all possibilities, because legal and social aspects of AMD have not been established yet.

  • In comparison to the numbers of such studies of fish, few studies have been carried out on the immunity, physiology and ecology of abalone, while studies on abalone disease are also extremely rare. Moreover, mass mortality of cultured abalone due to pathogenic bacteria has not been reported in the southern coast of Korea. However, Vibrio-like bacteria have been isolated from dead abalone, which indicates that a review is required in order to determine the cause of abalone mortality. Use of an antimicrobial agent to minimize the damage caused by disease in abalone farms is common, but the therapeutic effects are insignificant. Demand for probiotics has increased, but research on the development of probiotics for use in abalone culture is very rare. Therefore, the present study isolated KC16-2 from fermented kimchi soup and investigated the characteristics of the isolate as a candidate probiotic bacterium in abalone. KC16-2 was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (B. amyloliquefaciens KC16-2) based on its biochemical properties and 16S rRNA gene sequence. B. amyloliquefaciens KC16-2 showed inhibitory effects against the growth of various vibrios in vitro, and kept the numbers constant until four days after inoculation in marine water at a temperature of $15{\sim}25^{\circ}C$, indicating the possible use of KC16-2 as a probiotic, except in the winter. The growth of KC16-2 was inhibited by bile salt, but the numbers increased over time suggesting the bacteria were still alive in the abalone's digestive tract. Abalone fed with a diet including KC16-2 for 12 weeks showed good growth, but showed no significant differences from the control group. However, the mortality of the abalone supplied the probiotic diet was reduced to half that of the control group in a challenge test with Vibrio tubiashii. Therefore, we suggest that B. amyloliquefaciens KC16-2 could be used as a probiotic bacterium for control of the mortality of abalone caused by opportunistic pathogenic vibrios.

  • Forests contain a huge amount of carbon (C) and climate change could affect forest C dynamics. This study was conducted to predict the C dynamics of Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis forests, which are the most dominant needleleaf and broadleaf forests in Korea, using the Korean Forest Soil Carbon (KFSC) model under the two climate change scenarios (2012-2100; Constant Temperature (CT) scenario and Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 scenario). To construct simulation unit, the forest land areas for those two species in the 5th National Forest Inventory (NFI) data were sorted by administrative district and stand age class. The C pools were initialized at 2012, and any disturbance was not considered during the simulation period. Although the forest C stocks of two species generally increased over time, the forest C stocks under the RCP 8.5 scenario were less than those stocks under the CT scenario. The C stocks of P. densiflora forests increased from 260.4 Tg C in 2012 to 395.3 (CT scenario) or 384.1 Tg C (RCP 8.5 scenario) in 2100. For Q. variabilis forests, the C stocks increased from 124.4 Tg C in 2012 to 219.5 (CT scenario) or 204.7 (RCP 8.5 scenario) Tg C in 2100. Compared to 5th NFI data, the initial value of C stocks in dead organic matter C pools seemed valid. Accordingly, the annual C sequestration rates of the two species over the simulation period under the RCP 8.5 scenario (65.8 and $164.2g\;C\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$ for P. densiflora and Q. variabilis) were lower than those values under the CT scenario (71.1 and $193.5g\;C\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$ for P. densiflora and Q. variabilis). We concluded that the C sequestration potential of P. densiflora and Q. variabilis forests could be decreased by climate change. Although there were uncertainties from parameters and model structure, this study could contribute to elucidating the C dynamics of South Korean forests in future.

  • Ulmi cortex is the elm bark or root bark of Ulmus macrocarpa Hance and has been used as an ingredient of traditional medicine for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-cancer and wound healing on both the East and the West. This study investigated whether the Ulmus macrocarpa Hance Water extract (UMWE) has the in vivo and in vitro immune activating effect. Animals were orally administrated for 14 days as follows: no treat group with distilled water, cyclophosphamide (CY) group with 120 mg/kg of CY, UMWE 100+CY group with 100 mg/kg of UMWE and 120 mg/kg of CY, UMWE 200+CY group with 200 mg/kg of UMWE and 120 mg/kg of CY, UMWE 100 group with 100 mg/kg of UMWE and UMWE 200 group with 200 mg/kg of UMWE. The immunosuppressive drug CY was intraperitoneally injected to induce immune suppression. Spleen indices showed small changes in CY injected groups but splenocyte indices showed greater decrease in the same groups. However, UMWE appeared to relieve CY’s immunosuppression. UMWE also delayed in vitro splenocyte death increasing its longevity. These data obtained by MTT assay and 7-amino-actinomycin D which stains preferentially dead than live cells. UMWE alone did not show cytotoxicity based on its apoptototic effect on splenocytes in vitro and in vivo. Splenic NK cell activity was maintained by UMWE under the presence of CY in vitro. The data indicated that UMWE protects splenocytes from the immunosuppressive drug CY under in vitro and in vivo conditions.
