  • In manufacturing of flatfish skin collagen peptide (FSCP) and flatfish protein hydrolysate (FPH) by reuse of dead flatfish from fish farm in Jeju island, the industrial process was optimized with the laboratory scale research and the on-field process. Segmented unit processes from raw material incoming to shipment were established to produce commercial product of FSCP and FPH. Total plate counts of FSCP were twenty five times of FPH, but food poisoning bacteria were not detected in two samples. FSCP and FPH were safe from heavy metal such as Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II). The residual contents of antibiotics and disinfection matter in FSCP and FPH were not detected. The optimized process for mass production made the one-third of the running time and two times of the yield. From economic analysis, the production cost was estimated to 22,000 and 12,000 won/kg for FSCP and FPH, respectively. Therefore the product from the reuse of dead flatfish was expected to have a considerable competitive price and high added-value functional food material compared with other commercially available fish products.

  • In the paper we propose and implement a new indoor localization system where the techniques of magnetic field based fingerprinting and pedestrian dead reckoning are combined. First, we determine a target's location by comparing acquired magnetic field values with a magnetic field map containing pre-collected field values at different locations and choosing the location having the closest value. As the target moves, we use pedestrian dead reckoning to estimate the expected moving path, reducing the maximum positioning error of the initial location. The system eliminates the problem of localization error accumulation in pedestrian dead reckoning with the help of the fingerprinting and does not require Wi-Fi AP infrastructure, enabling cost-effective localization solution.

  • This paper presents experimental results carried out on the purge characteristic of the anodic dead-end mode fuelcell and how to improve the cell performance by pulsation effects. The dead-end mode fuelcell has some merits that a fuel supplying device is not needed and the cell power is higher than that in the open mode fuelcell. However, the purge is necessary for preventing the porous media from being flooded by liquid water formed in the channel. At this time, the un-reacted fuel is discharged with the liquid water together in purge process. The discharged fuel can make the fuel efficiency lower. Therefore, the number of purge times should be decreased for the better fuel efficiency. In this study, the outlet of the anode channel was equipped with a purge solenoid valve and a pulsation generator. The purge times was decreased when the current density decreased and operation pressure increased without the pulsation effects. In addition, when the pulsation effects such as various frequencies or amplitudes were applied, purge times was alleviated up to 40%.

  • An episode of corona is a heterogeneity-caused electric discharge that occurs when electric fields are formed layer on layer and concentrated on an electrode. Electric wires built at the tip of 154kV private facilities use dead end clamp spawns corona from homogeneity caused by field concentration. Corona induces power loss, noise, insulator failure and more. In this research, we've studied the characteristics of coronas that take place in porcelain insulators and terminal electric wires of supporting hard wares (dead end clamp) that are set up as spares in the 154kV private facilities use hydroelectricity installations to support electric wires. Corona, which cannot be identified by regular methods, was measured utilizing UV image camera. As the result of measuring corona via UV image camera, we've confirmed that the depletion of insulators was accelerated following the wire end treatment method and validated the stress intensity of insulators at various lengths of bare wires caused by electric fields via FEMLAB. We have also proposed a new model for relieving homogeneity-caused field concentration, and after analyzing the proposed model via FEMLAB, we've confirmed that the concentration of field distribution was indeed reduced. Such results are exploited in installation of private facilities use equipments, maintenance of insulators and hard wares as well as safety enhancement, and are anticipated to be effectively utilized in corona prevention measures.

  • Hydraulic dead-zone and particle removal efficiency in the base frame of a constructed wetland was evaluated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The fraction of hydraulic dead-zone was estimated to be 1.2-2.1 % (v/v) and it was attributed to the artificial islands developed in the constructed wetland. Solids deposition rate could be increased with higher hydraulic retention time (HRT, ranged from 2.2 to 4.2 hr) of the wetland and larger particle size (ranged from 10 to $50{\mu}m$) in the influent. Experimental results showed that the volume concentration of the particles smaller than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter was varied from $1.99{\times}10^3{\mu}m^3/ml$ (HRT 12.8 hr) to $3.92{\times}10^3{\mu}m^3/ml$(HRT 2.2 hr) in the influent of the constructed wetland. With the effluent volume concentration data, removal efficiency of those particles was calculated to be 71.2 and 24.7 % when the HRT was 12.8 and 2.2 hr, respectively. Similar trend with the HRT variation could be identified with CFD analysis.

  • To improve membrane performance, the dead-end and Cross-flow ultrafiltration with or without ultrasound irradiation onto the membrane module were carried out using a BSA protein solution. Intermittent or continuous irradiation of ultrasound effectively suppressed the formation of fouling on membrane or removed the fouling layers from membrane. Effect of ultrasound irradiation on the enhancement of ultrafiltration performance was more increased at the operating conditions which form more membrane fouling (at the operating conditions of higher feed concentration and TMP, and lower flow rate). The permeate flukes were enhanced up to 1.9 times in case of the dead-end ultrafiltration and 1.5 times in case of the cross-flow ultrafiltration by ultrasound irradiation onto the membrane module.

  • This paper presents a polarity changing method without dead time of a cycloconverter with an LC resonant circuit. According to the proposed method, dead time to prevent short circuit for the polarity changing is not required. Therefore the delay of control and the harmonic components of output currents can be decreased. And the proposed method can be expanded for the other natural commutated cycloconverters of noncirculating current type. In this paper, the switching method of the proposed polarity changing without dead time is studied, and in order to confirm the validity of the proposed method the experiment is carried out with a cycloconverter with an LC resonant circuit.

  • The effects of dead-time and offset error, which cause output current distortion in single-phase grid-connected inverters are investigated this paper. Offset error is typically generated by measuring phase current, including the voltage unbalance of analog devices and non-ideal characteristics in current measurement paths. Dead-time inevitably occurs during generation of the gate signal for controlling power semiconductor switches. Hence, the performance of the grid-connected inverter is significantly degraded because of the current ripples. The current and voltage, including ripple components on the synchronous reference frame and stationary reference frame, are analyzed in detail. An algorithm, which has the proportional resonant controller, is also proposed to reduce current ripple components in the synchronous PI current regulator. As a result, computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is greatly simplified, and the magnitude of the current ripples is significantly decreased. The simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the usefulness of the proposed current ripple reduction algorithm.

  • Dead-ended operation of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) provides the simplification of fuel cell systems to reduce fuel consumption and weight of fuel cell. However, the water accumulation within the channel prohibits a uniform supply of fuel. Optimization of the purge strategy is required to increase the fuel cell efficiency since fuel and water are removed during the purge process. In this study, we investigated the average voltage output which depends on two interrelated conditions, namely, the supply gas pressure, purging valve open time. In addition, flow visualization was performed to better understand the water build-up on the anode side and cathode side of PEMFC in terms of a variety of the current density. We analyzed the correlation between the purge condition and water flooding.

  • This paper deals with development of an autopilot system for leisure yacht based on NMEA 2000 network and android platform. The developed system can operate both for manual steering and automatic navigation mode. In automatic steering mode, after manipulation of commands which are NMEA 0183 sentences by android platform, the developed system translates and sends the packets through NMEA 2000 network. Then the controller which is connected to NMEA 2000 network receives the commands and controls the boat's rudder system automatically. The automatic steering mode is achieved by cooperation of two controllers; one for controlling the rudder system, and the other for controlling the vessel's heading. To control the vessel's rudder and heading angle two PID controllers are developed with an adjustable dead-band gain. Also, in order to eliminate the steady-state error occurred by applying dead-band, an integral controller which specifically supervises the system's behavior inside the dead-band area is developed. In this paper, at the first stage, simulations are accomplished using computer in order to examine the feasibility of the proposed based on simulation results. In the next step, the system on a real hydraulic steering model is implemented and at the end the performance examination by implementing it on a real boat and doing test navigation is executed.
