  • The video compression standard required a processing technique for a high resoluion image and increased the coding size to increase the resolution of the image. Accurate motion estimation and increased coding size provide high accuracy and compression rate, but there is a problem of increased computational complexity. In this paper, we use DCT - based motion estimation in the frequency domain to reduce complexity. However, we found that the DCT and quantization process used in a general video encoder are applied to the frequency domain encoder, resulting in problems caused by the scaling process. Therfore, in this paper, we extract the scaling matrix that can be applied in the DCT step and resolve the, and improve the performance of motion estimation using increased coding size.

  • In the typical data partitioning for error-resilient video coding, motion and macroblock header information is separated from the texture information. It can be an effective tool for the transmission of video over the error prone environment. For Intra-coded frames, however, the loss of DCT (discrete cosine transform) coefficients is fatal because there is no ther information to reconstruct the corrupted macroblocks by errors. For Inter-coded frames, when error occurs in DCT coefficients, the picture quality is degraded because all DCT coefficients are discarded in those packets. In this paper, we propose an efficient data partitioning and coding method for DCT-based error-resilient video. The quantized DCT coefficients are partitioned into the even-value approximation and the remainder parts. It is shown that the proposed algorithm provides a better quality of the high priority part than the conventional methods.

Still Image Watermarking in the DCT Domain Using the Human Visual System (DCT 영역에서의 인간의 시각적 특성을 이용한 정지 영상 워터마킹 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a digital watermarking method for still images, in which the human visual system (HVS) is used in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. The modulation transfer function (MTF) of the HVS model is employed to increase the invisibility of the inserted watermark in images. The proposed watermarking method is shown to be robust to several common image processing techniques, including lowpass filtering and cropping. Also, using the energy relationship of the DCT, we derive the equation that directly computes the watermark weighting factor in the DCT domain for the specified peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of the still image and the length of watermark to be inserted. The difference between desired PSNR and PSNR in spatial domain is within 0.07dB for the 7 test images.

  • In this paper, we present a novel segmentation method that can extract new foreground objects from a current frame in real-time. It is performed by detecting differences between the current frame and reference frame taken from a fixed camera. We minimize computing complexity for real-time video processing. First DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) is utilized to generate rough binary segmentation maps where foreground and background regions are separated. DCT shows better result of texture analysis than previous methods where texture analysis is performed in spatial domain. It is because texture analysis in frequency domain is easier than that in special domain and intensity and texture in DCT are taken into account at the same time. We maximize run-time efficiency of DCT by considering color information to analyze object region prior to DCT process. Last we use Guided filter for natural matting of the generated binary segmentation map. In general, Guided filter can enhance quality of intermediate result by incorporating guidance information. However, it shows some limitations in homogeneous area. Therefore, we present an additional method which can overcome them.

  • In this paper, we discussed the traditional methods of generating digital halftoning image and DCT transform. Then we propose a new and simple halftoning algorithm that is based on DCT transformation. We do the feasibility test to verify the proposed algorithm. So we assessed several images generated by adjusting weights of DCT coefficients. As a result, we got the better result for weights of the ramp function type than for weights of the step function type through experiment. As a simple application, we can apply our algorithm to the MPEG video for generating the halftoning video.

  • We presented a very fast and robust method of text line segmentation based on the DCT blocks of color image without decompression and binary transformation processes. Using DC and another three primary AC coefficients from block DCT we created a gray-scale image having reduced size by 8x8. In order to detect and locate white strips between text lines we analyzed horizontal and vertical projection profiles of the image and we applied a direct markov model to recover the missing white strips by estimating hidden periodicity. We presented performance results. The results showed that our method was 40 - 100 times faster than traditional method.

  • A dctA gene encoding a protein with identity to a C4-dicarboxylate/H+ was cloned from a beneficial biocontrol bacterium, P. chororaphis O6. Expression of the dctA was induced in minimal medium by several organic acids and was repressed by glucose. Highest expression was observed in early-log cells grown on fumarate and succinate with decline as cells approached late-log phase. The dctA transcript accumulated weakly when cells were grown on malate but strong expression was observed with benzoate. Expression of the dctA transcript was repressed in early-log cells upon addition of glucose to fumarate, but was detected as the cell culture aged. A dctA-deficient mutant of O6, constructed by marker exchange mutagenesis, did not grow on minimal medium containing succinate, benzoate, or fumarate, and growth on malate was delayed. The dctA mutant and wild type grew equally on glucose. The dctA mutant on cucumber roots in sterilized potting soil was colonized at levels comparable to those of the wild type, but induction level of disease resistance by the mutant against target leaf spot disease was decreased. These results may indicate that the dctA is essential for utilization of certain organic acids and its expression is controlled by the availability of sugars. In addition, the dctA is not essenitial for cucumber root colonization, but important for induction of disease resistance.

A Study on Low Area/Power Schemes of Noise Generation System (잡음 발생기의 저면적, 저전력 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The performance of communication systems should be tested against a set of requirements. To this end, noise generation systems are used to generate noise signals with specified characteristics. In recent study, noise generation system using DCT outperforms the conventional noise generation system when a noise model requires complicated PSD(Power Spectral Density) specifications. In this paper low area/power structures of non-DCT block in DCT-based noise generation system are proposed. Simulation results show that the low area structure results in area reduction by 61-64% and the low power structure achieves power reduction by 88-89% except DCT blocks.

  • This paper presetns a 2-D DCT architecture adopting accurac y compensator for reducing the hardware complexity and increasing processing speed in VL\ulcornerSI implementation. In the application fields such as moving pictures experts group (MPEG) and joint photographic experts group (JPEG), 2-D DCT processor must be implemented precisely enough to meet the accuracy specifications of the ITU-T H.261. Almost all of 2-D DCT processors have been implemented using many multiplications and accumulations of matrices and vectors. The number of multiplications and accumulations seriously influence on comlexity and speed of 20D DCT processor. In 2-D DCT with fixed-point calculations, the computation bit width must be sufficiently large for the above accuracy specifications. It makes the reduction of hardware complexity hard. This paper proposes the accuracy compensator which compensates the accuracy of the finite word length calculation. 2-D DCT processor with the proposed accuracy compensator shows fairly reduced hardware complexity and improved processing speed.

Analysis of Statistical Properties of Propagation Errors in DCT Coefficient-Dropping Transcoder (DCT 계수 제거 트랜스코딩에서의 전파 왜곡의 통계적 특성 분석)

  • Discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient dropping is well recognized as an efficient rate adaptation transcoding in motion-compensated (MC)-DCT based MPEG-compressed videos. However, in this scheme, the errors incurred by the DCT coefficient-dropping are propagated and often result in significant visual quality degradation. This paper presents two propositions describing well the statistical properties of propagated errors. That is, we propose that the DCT error of the current frame is not correlated to the propagated errors of the previous frames. We also propose that the overall distortions in a given frame can be approximated as the sum of the DCT error of the current frame and the propagated errors from the previous frames. Then, it is shown that several computer simulations with different video sequences verify the effectiveness of the proposed statistical analyses.
