To examine the seedling stand and growth as affected by early seeding dates of dry direct seeded rice in the Honam plain area of Korea, Dongjinbyeo was seeded at six seeding dates from early March to late April in rice fields of silty loam soil(Jeonbuk series) at the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES) for two years, 1996 and 1998. Seedling stand decreased slightly. with an early seeding date, but it produced more than the optimum seedling number except for the seeding of 25 March in 1996. Days to emergence was significantly longer, as seeding date was earlier, and days to emergence by early seeding was shortened only by 8 days because the mean air temperature was lower in 1996 than average, while in 1998, the reduction effect was nine to twenty five days because the mean air temperature was higher than average. In early seeding, various weeds occurred at the emergence date of rice and dominant weeds were Alopecurus aequailis, Ludwigia prostata and Rorippa islandica. NH$_4$$^{+}$ -N content in the soil at the 5th leaf stage and maximum tillering stage were lower, as the seeding date was earlier when nitrogen was split applied as basal and top dressed in 1996, while it was not significantly different among seeding dates when nitrogen was intensively applied as a top dressing in 1998. Tiller number at the maximum tillering stage and panicle number/m$^2$ were more, as seeding date was earlier in 1996, while it was not different in 1998. Filled grain rate and 1,000 grain weight was not different among the seeding dates. Milled rice yield was significantly decreased in the seeding before the middle of March, but in the seeding after late March, it was not varied when compared with the normal seeding date in 1996, while in 1998, there was no difference among seeding dates. From the above results, in consideration of seedling stand, weed occurance, rice growth and milled rice yield, the critical optimum early seeding time in the southern plain area may lie in early April. But it was suggested that when soil moisture is proper for seeding practices, seeding amount is increased and nitrogen is applied after plumule emergence of rice, milled rice yield may not be reduced in the seeding of middle or late March, compared with the seeding in April.l.
Timely application and the choice of herbicides are crucial for red pepper production since the yield is significantly reduced by weed occurrence. Experiments were conducted to provide efficient weed control methods in red-pepper fields. The results suggest the followings: 1) in the field of prevalent grass weeds, application of pendimethalin EC as pre-emergence herbicide after transplanting followed by tank-mix with pendimethalin and fluazipfop-P-butyl EC as post-emergence at 3-5 leaf stage of Digitalia species gave a good control for 80 days without crop injury, 2) as for grass and other weeds occurrence, sequential application of tank-mix with glufosinate-ammonium SL and pendimethalin at 30 days after transplanting (DAT) followed by glufosinate-ammonium. at < 20 cm of weed height with 30 days' interval provided better weed control than 2-time application of glufosinate-ammonium. single application for 80 days in this trial. 3) To prevent from drifting of non-selective herbicide spray mist into red-pepper at furrow application, glufosinate-ammonium. should be applied at 15 cm of spray nozzle height at 20 DAT (18 cm tall of red pepper), and the spray nozzle should be placed below 30 cm above ground to keep spray drift minimum to red pepper with > 40 cm plant height at 40 DAT.
The aphid-eating gall-midge, Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani), as predator of aphids was wildly used as one of the biological control agents for control of several kinds of aphids. Their some kinds of biological characteristics were examined. The developmental periods of A. aphidimyza from egg to adult with the green peach aphid as prey were 40 and 12 days at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Supplying the cotton aphid as prey, their developmental periods were shorter than with the green peach aphid. In case of the preservation of pupa in the cold condition, emergence rates were over 90% for 1 and 2 weeks at 5$^{\circ}C$ and l0$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Adult females of A. aphidimyza began mating and laying eggs at 2-3 days after emergence, and they laid about 200 eggs for lo days of average life span. Most of adults were emerged from pupa at 6 to 8 pm during a day, and they mainly acted in the early night.
Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus, is a primary vector of pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus in Korea. Emergence characteristics of the adults were studied in Jinju, Korea using dead pine logs in which the larvae of the sawyer overwintered from 1999 to 2002. Emergence data showed that the adults began to emerge out of the logs in sunny place from May the 15th in average of the four years. Cumulative emergence ratio (CER) reached at 50% at mid-June, and the emergence terminated by early or late July depending on years. In shady place, however,50% CER was reached 17 days later than in sunny place. The 50% CER of males reached 1 to 4 days earlier than that of females depending on years. Of the adults emerged from the logs collected from February to April in 2001, 97.6% was univoltine, and the rest was biennial which emerged from May to July of the next year. Female and male adults emerged throughout 24 hours; 32.3% of the total adults emerged from 8 to 12 a.m. It took 68.0 seconds for the adults to escape from pine logs.
Herbicidal characterisitcs of natural product chrysophanic acid were investigated in a greenhouse condition. At early- and middle-stage post-emergence treatments, several grasses and broadleaf weeds appeared to be very susceptible to chrysophanic acid. However, any significant herbicidal activity treated by pre-emergence did not occur at concentration ranges from 31.3 to 1,000 ug $mL^{-1}$. Herbicidal activity of chrysophanic acid estimated by visual injury for large crabgrass was much higher when applied at 7 to 14 days after seeding than at 21 and 28 days after seeding. By post-emergence treatment, chrysophanic acid caused very considerable phytotoxicity on several grasses and broadleaf crops. In herbicidal interaction experiments determined by Colby's method, the effect of chrysophanic acid and caryophyllene oxide tank-mixture showed very high synergistic activity. Although chrysophanic acid did not give any pre-emergence effect, herbicidal spectrum tended to be very wide and strong when treated by post-emergence. These results suggest that chrysophanic acid possesses a possible potential to develop as a natural herbicide.
The performance of 7 sugary (su) and 12 shrunken-2 (sh2) sweet com hybrids which are commercially grown in the United States was tested in Korea. The 100-seed weight of su hybrids (16.5-23.6 g) was much heavier compared to that of sh2 hybrids (10.9-17.5 g). The germination rate of su and sh2 hybrids at $25^{\circ}C$ ranged 93.3-100% and 86.7-98.9%, the emergence rate of su and sh2 hybrids in cold test ranged 78.9-97.8% and 62.2-97.8%, and field emergence rate of su and sh2 hybrids ranged 74.4-100.0% and 79.9-98.2%, respectively. In su hybrids, there was a significantly positive correlation between germination rate at $25^{\circ}C$ and emergence rate in cold test or early growth. In contrast, in sh2 hybrids seed weight was positively correlated with early plant growth, while not with the germination rate at $25^{\circ}C$ or emergence rate in cold test and field. Most sh2 hybrids produced larger and more marketable ears compared to su hybrids although there were significant differences among the hybrids in the same genotype. At harvest (24 days after pollination) soluble solids content of su hybrids (24.3-27.1 Brix %) was much higher than that of sh2 hybrids (13.8-18.0 Brix %), while total sugars of sh2 hybrids (21.4-28.6% on the dry weight basis) was much higher compared to su hybrids (2.4-15.9%). Considering germination and emergence rates, marketable ear production, and total sugar content, 'GCB 70' and 'Sweet Satin' in su hybrids and 'Ice Queen', 'Aspen', 'Sweet Magic', 'Bandit', 'Xtrasweet 82', 'Aspen', and 'Cambella 90' in sh2 hybrids performed better than other hybrids.
Indoor seed treatments to elevate seedling emergence should be of value. The study was done to model the presown treatments of Platycodon grandiflorum seeds by evaluating the treatment effects of priming,$GA_3$, drying and water imbibition after drying on their germination and then their successive seed treatments on the basis of its seedling emergence. after priming using $Ca(NO_3)_2\;and\;GA_3$ treatment under their different concentrations and light quality illuminated for 12 hours a day were done separately and their two best results were compared to determine the better one, drying of imbibed seeds using the above best result and water imbibition of the dried seeds were successively done to check the rates of germination and emergence. In each treatment of priming and $GA_3$, the former best germination occurred at $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 150 mM done under 2 day darkness but the latter one did at 0.01 mM done under 12 hour a day red light forced for 3 days. Of the two best results from priming and $GA_3$ treatments, the latter result was shown higher germination rate. $GA_3$ treated seeds were best desiccated under $35^{\circ}C$ and 4 hour red light illumination. The germination rate of seeds dried after $GA_3$ treatment was enhanced as imibibed 2 days immediately before sowing. Seedling emergence of all 3 successive treatments, $GA_3$, drying and water imbibition before sowing was the greatest than the two others, only $GA_3$ treatment and the combination of $GA_3$ and drying, in which indicated that its presown seed treatment must follow the successive procedure of the above 3 ones.
Effect of gibberllin on the breaking of bud dormancy of root and growth of aerial parts were investigated under laboratory and field condition for the prolongation of shoot growth duration, shortening of fruit bearing age and the increase of root yield. Drop application of GA (0.5ml of 50ppm) on rhizome of one year old root broke bud dormancy better than by low temperature. Soaking for one hour of one year old roots which wintered in the field in GA (50-200ppm) greatly accelerated the emergence of new buds while kinetin was only effective at low level (50ppm). GA substantially increased stem length in early stage and petiole length later on while kinetin increased stem diameter. Under the field condition with polythylene film tunnel (PET) in early spring the soaking in GA (50ppm for 1 hour) of rhizome of 4 year old root with replanting and dropping GA (50ppm, 1ml) on rhizome without replanting brought earlier emergence (29days) in comparison with that in the usual field. PET alone caused 14 day-early emergence. GA increased the length of stem and petiole only in early stage and replanting decreased only petiole length in later stage. Soaking in GA with replanting caused the Pronounced decrease in peduncle length, percentage of (ruin set and dry weight of reproductive organ (fruits and peduncle). Dropping without replanting showed significant decrease only in dry weight of reproductive organ. Fruit maturing was 20 days earlier than in usual held with little difference between GA and PET. It is well expected that GA could be used for early emergence of bud, shortening of root dormancy period, thinning of fruit and higher root yield according to application amount and methods.
Climatic condition and seeding depth affect the seedling stand and early growth in the direct-seeded rice cultivation on dry soil. This experiment was conducted to elucidate the effects of the day /night temperatures and the seeding depths on the seedling emergence and mesocotyl elongation of rice seed. Three combinations of the day/night temperatures(25/2$0^{\circ}C$ 20/15$^{\circ}C$ and 20/1$0^{\circ}C$) were employed with seeding depths 1, 3, 5 and 7cm at the Phytotron of the Crop Experiment Station in 1991. It appeared that seedling emergence ratio increased and days to seedling emergence decreased in the high temperature (25/2$0^{\circ}C$) and the deep seeding depth (5 and 7cm) condition. The seedling emergence ratio did not. show the, difference up . to the seeding depths of 3cm and below, but the ratio decreased from the seeding depths of 5cm and above. Plant height and leaf number were almost the same up to the depths of 3cm at 30 days after seeding, but those of the seeding depths of 5cm and 7cm were remarkably reduced in all temperature combinations. Mesocotyl and lower internode elongation were seen in the high temperature(25/2$0^{\circ}C$) with the seeding depths of 5cm and 7cm. In the seeding depth of 6cm, of the tested varieties, Tamjinbyeo and Odaebyeo showed the highest emergence ratio. Generally, leaves of all tested varieties appeared approximately in the soil depth of 3cm, so the reasonable seeding depth will be around 3cm in the direct-seeded cultivation on dry soil.

We developed a simple model to predict emergence time and emergence rate of southern type garlic using the daily mean temperature. Emergence rate of garlic was decreased and emergence time was delayed on higher temperature than optimum temperature of $12.7^{\circ}C$. In the model, firstly daily emergence rate was calculated using a beta function to input daily mean temperature, then the percentage of garlic emergence was calculated using a nonlinear model with accumulated emergence rate. The model was good to describe the experimental data of growth cabinet. Also it can explain well the experimental data using temperature gradient tunnel, designed for verification of model performance. But there are 5 days of deviation between estimated and measured time of garlic emergence on the field experiment. More research is needed to develop an advanced model considering other factors, such as soil moisture.
