Detection of Subsurface Defects in Metal Materials Using Infrared Thermography; Image Processing and Finite Element Modeling

  • Infrared thermography is an emerging approach to non-contact, non-intrusive, and non-destructive inspection of various solid materials such as metals, composites, and semiconductors for industrial and research interests. In this study, data processing was applied to infrared thermography measurements to detect defects in metals that were widely used in industrial fields. When analyzing experimental data from infrared thermographic testing, raw images were often not appropriate. Thus, various data analysis methods were used at the pre-processing and processing levels in data processing programs for quantitative analysis of defect detection and characterization; these increased the infrared non-destructive testing capabilities since subtle defects signature became apparent. A 3D finite element simulation was performed to verify and analyze the data obtained from both the experiment and the image processing techniques.

  • The progressive failure following strain localization in concrete can be analyzed effectively using finite element modeling of fracture process zone of concrete with a finite element embedded discontinuity. In this study, a finite element with embedded discontinuous line is utilized for the analysis of progressive failure in concrete. The finite element with embedded discontinuity is a kind of discrete crack element, but the difficulties in discrete crack approach such as remeshing or adding new nodes along with crack growth can be avoided. Using a discontinuous shape function for this element, the displacement discontinuity is embedded within an element and its constitutive equation is modeled from the modeling of fracture process zone. The element stiffness matrix is derived and its dual mapping technique for numerical integration is employed. Then, a finite element analysis program with employed algorithms is developed and failure analysis results using developed finite element program are verified through the comparison with experimental data and other analysis results.

  • Micro wave seeker consists of a gimbal structure, a antenna and many RF parts. And Missile's propelling powers excite a gimbal structure, a antenna and many RF parts. Therefore, We must inquire into external forces to act on a micro wave seeker before everything. We must inquire into design parameters and then estimate dynamic characteristics of a gimbal structure with a finite element model to reflect part's characteristics for design for a gimbal structure in consideration of vibration features. In this paper, a gimbal structure of a micro wave seeker is modeled in finite element method and then updated by using the experimental modal data. Before we make a finite element model of a gimbal structure of a micro wave seeker, we make a finite element model of a sub-structure and compare with the experimental modal data.

구조해석(構造解析)을 위한 Symbolic Manipulation Program (A Symbolic Manipulation Computer Program for Structural Analysis)

  • 기존(旣存) 범용 구조해석용(構造解析用) 프로그램들은 선택(選擇)된 역학적(力學的) 이론(理論), 계산(計算) algorithm등이 고정(固定)되어 있으므로 이용자(利用者)는 프로그램을 원하는 대로 control하기 어렵고 프로그램에 정의(定義)된 대로 data input만 준비(準備)한다. 이용자(利用者)가 계산과정(計算過程)을 control 할 수 있으며 원하는 역학적(力學的) 이론(理論) 및 계산(計算) algorithm등을 보완(補完)하여 이용(利用)할 수 있도록 한 구조해석용(構造解析用) 프로그램인 Symbolic Manipulation Program들이 개발(開發)되었으나 이들은 single domain 문제(問題) 해석용(解析用)이므로 대형(大型)콤퓨터가 필요(必要)하다. 본(本) 연구(硏究)에서는 substructure technique을 도입(導入)하여 구조물(構造物)을 multi domain으로 하여 중(中), 소형(小型)콤퓨터로도 해석(解析)할 수 있으며, matrix analysis 및 finite element analysis를 할 수 있도록 finite element characteristic arrays(Stiffness, Mass matrix)등을 계산(計算)하는 Element Subroutine 중 3D Beam element, Plate bending element 및 동력학계산(動力學計算)을 위한 Eigenvalue routine을 포함(包含)한 Symbolic Manipulation Program 개발(開發)이다. 이 프로그램의 구조(構造)는 module화(化)된 독립적(獨立的) 기능(機能)을 가진 processor 들로 구성(構成)되어 프로그램의 수정(修正), 첨가(添加), 삭제(削除)가 용이(容易)하며, Integrated Program Network(IPN) 개념중(槪念中) data base 방법(方法)으로 matrix form으로 된 data의 취급이 효율적(效率的)이다.

  • 최근 학교 현장에서는 웹 기반의 멀티미디어 자료에 대한 활용이 매우 크게 증가하고 있다. 이에 따라 멀티미디어 자료를 수월하게 검색하기 위한 다양한 메타데이터 요소 정의가 등장하고 있으나 국제 표준을 중심으로 제시되고, 국내 현장 교사들의 의견은 거의 반영되지 않고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 현장 교사들의 의견을 반영하여 웹 페이지 안에 포함되어 있는 멀티미디어 자료들을 효율적으로 검색, 관리할 수 있는 메타데이터 요소를 정의하고 실제 활용을 위한 XML DTD를 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구 결과는 멀티미디어 자료의 공유 및 활용을 높이는데 사용될 수 있다.

PREDICTION OF RESIDUAL STRESS FOR DISSIMILAR METALS WELDING AT NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS USING FUZZY NEURAL NETWORK MODELS

  • A fuzzy neural network model is presented to predict residual stress for dissimilar metal welding under various welding conditions. The fuzzy neural network model, which consists of a fuzzy inference system and a neuronal training system, is optimized by a hybrid learning method that combines a genetic algorithm to optimize the membership function parameters and a least squares method to solve the consequent parameters. The data of finite element analysis are divided into four data groups, which are split according to two end-section constraints and two prediction paths. Four fuzzy neural network models were therefore applied to the numerical data obtained from the finite element analysis for the two end-section constraints and the two prediction paths. The fuzzy neural network models were trained with the aid of a data set prepared for training (training data), optimized by means of an optimization data set and verified by means of a test data set that was different (independent) from the training data and the optimization data. The accuracy of fuzzy neural network models is known to be sufficiently accurate for use in an integrity evaluation by predicting the residual stress of dissimilar metal welding zones.

Analytical modeling of thin-walled box T-joints

  • A general analytical method for computing the joint stiffness from the sectional properties of the members that form the joint is derived using Vlasov's thin-walled beam theory. The analytical model of box T-joint under out-of-plane loading is investigated and validated using shell finite element results and experimental data. The analytical model of the T-joint is implemented in a beam finite element model using a revolute joint element. The out-of-plane displacement computed using the beam-joint model is compared with the corresponding shell element model. The results show close correlation between the beam revolute joint model and shell element model.

혼합 금속 분말의 고온 치밀화 거동 (Densification Behavior of Mixed Metal Powders under High Temperature)

  • Densification behaviors of mixed metal powder under high temperature were investigated. Experimental data of mixed copper and tool steel powder with various volume fractions of Cu powder were obtained under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. By mixing the creep potentials of McMeeking and co-workers and of Abouaf and co-workers originally for pure powder, the mixed creep potentials with various volume fractions of Cu powder were employed in the constitutive models. The constitutive equations were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification of mixed powder under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. Finite element calculations by using the creep potentials of Abouaf and co-workers agreed reasonably well with experimental data, however, those by McMeeking and co-workers underestimate experimental data as observed in the case of pure metal powders.

  • Densification behavior of aluminum alloy(A16061) powder was investigated under cold compaction. Experimental data were obtained under triaxial compression with various loading conditions. A special form of the Cap model was proposed from experimental data of A16061 powder under triaxial compression. The proposed yield function and several yield functions in the literature were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification behavior of A16061 powder under cold isostatic pressing and die compaction. The agreement between finite element calculations from the proposed yield function and experimental data is very good under cold isostatic pressing and die compaction.
