  • The purpose of this study is to find out the various impressions that tone-on-tone coloration of shirts and ties gives. This experiment was based on the $2\times4\times4\times2$ factorial designs; colors (purple and green), shirt tones (vivid, light, dull, and dark), tie tones (vivid, light, dull, and dark) and perceivers' genders (male and female). The materials in the experiment developed for this study were composed of various stimuli and the response scales for each stimulus. The stimuli were 32 upper body photographs, which were color printed by CAD system (4D-box program). We unified those colors of shirts and ties, and then made shirt and tie tone different. 27 bi-polar adjectives, each of which was graded into seven in its degree, were used to evaluate the impression. The subjects of this research were 192 male and 192 female college students in Gyeongnam province including Jinju City. The data was analyzed by using SPSS program. Analyzing methods were one-way ANOVA and LSD test. The items of the adjectives were classified into 5 impression dimensions; potency, activeness, attractiveness, visibility and tenderness. In conclusion the impression through matching shirts and ties could be varied by the colors and the tones of shirts and ties. This study can be used as the basic color data in the males' clothes market which gradually pursuits high-quality, personality, and variety.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the characteristics of color communication tools and the color range applied in the Korean fashion industry. To collect the color sample and related references, a questionnaire was distributed during the time period, December, 1995 to June, 1996. From the responses, 2641 color samples used by 109 domestic brands, from 1993 spring/summer to 1996 spring/summer, were collected and analyzed. The data was measured by L*a*b*, and the H V/C formula found in the Munsell notation was used to calculate the data. To classify the color range served for the fashion industry, the distribution of colors are analyzed by difference of season and fabric. The results of this study are as follows : 1. Dominant colors in the Korean fashion industry are Red, Yellow-red, Yellow, purple-blue and low chromatic range colors. 2. While high value colors, such as pale, light greyish, light, dull, dark and vivid tone colors, are dominant in the spring/summer season, low value colors, such as greyish, dark greyish. and deep tone colors and warm colors such as Red, Yellow-red, are prevalent in the fall/winter season. 3. The number of colors commonly used for color planning is less than 20 colors, and both hue and tone are considered important when making color selections. 4. All brands take consumers' color preferences into consideration for color planning, and most of them also take color trends into account. 5. Hue and tone color characteristics analyzed by types of fabrics show more seasonal influence than the fabric itself.

For the study of image 40 kinds of costume samples is used and divided into tones : pale(Vp, Lgr, L), bright(P, B), vivid(S, V, Dp), dark(Gr, Dl, Dgr, Dk). A total 24 pairs of abjective words were used to measure the semantic differential scale in this study. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, ANOVA, MDS and regression analysis. The results are as follows; 1. Factor analysis has extracted 5 factors which consist of purple image in contemporary fashion. The factors are high quality, hardness and softness, simplicity, temperature, maturity. 2. There were significant differences in visual evaluation of purple tones. 3. The discrimination among. 4 purple tones was related to weight of purple 4. The evaluative dimensions of purple image in modern fashion were identified by Light - Heavy and Pale - Strong. 5. • The purpose of this research was to investigate the impression dimension and to elucidate the image perception depending on the tone of the Korean jacket and Korean skirt using the tone-on-tone coloration. As stimulators, the became same color by making the skirt and jacket red, yellow, and green at the same time. After the skirt and jacket became four kinds of tones, vivid, light, dull, and dark by altering value and fuing chroma in the assembled color, these tone-on-tone coloration stimulators $48(3\times4\times4)$ were used for the investigation of this study. Impression factor of the stimulus consisted of the 5 different dimensions(youthfulness and activity, attractiveness, gracefulness, concentration of attention, tenderness). Among these factors, youthfulness and activity, attractiveness were proved to be more important. In the tone-on-tone coloration of a Korean skirt and a Korean jacket, each dimensional image was affected by the character of color, also the evaluation of countenance showed the meaningful difference depending on tone. Thus, we can comprehend that the influence of tone as well as color affects the evaluation of an image.

  • A study focused on the implication of the blue and black colors in Korean traditional costume is presented. The presented study shows that the blue color in most of literatures regarding Korean traditional costume implies not only green and blue colors, but also dark blue and black colors. In a broad sense, the blue color implies a color category which includes green, indigo, blue, dark blue and black. On the other hand, the color includes blue, dark blue and black in a narrow sense. The rotor black, however, should not be interpreted as blue and dark blue because it has two bypes of black colors with and without reddish tone. Four reasons that the color blue was understood as the color black were discussed in this paper. The fundamental reason was that the blue color looked like black because of dark shadows. Secondly, there was a difference of color awareness between the color blue in Korea and in China. Thirdly, there was a color difference related to the type of textiles. Finally, other substitutes were used because of the lack of blue dyes.
