  • This study deals with the design of a bi-directional damper using a tuned liquid damper(TLD) and a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) for a SDOF building. Two dampers are usually needed to reduce wind-induced responses of tall buildings since they are along and across wind ones. The proposed damper has the advantage of controlling both responses with a single damper. The damper used in this study behaves as both a TLCD in a specific translational direction and a TLD in the other orthogonal direction. This paper presents experimental verification to confirm its control performance. First, shaking table test is carried out to investigate reducing responses by the damper. Control performance of the damper is expressed by the transfer function from shaking table accelerations to SDOF building ones. Testing results show that the damper reduced bi-directional responses of a SDOF building. Also, it reduced torsion responses.

  • Seismic control performance of MR dampers, which have severe nonlinearity, varies with respect to the dynamic characteristics of an earthquake such as magnitude, frequency and duration. In this study, the effects of excitation characteristics on the equivalent linear system of a building structure with the MR damper are investigated through numerical analysis for artificial ground motions generated from different response spectrums. The equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is calculated using Newmark and Hall's equations for ground motion amplification factors. It is found that the equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is dependent on the ratio of the maximum friction force of the MR damper over excitation magnitude. Frequency contents of the earthquake ground motion affects the equivalent damping ratio of long-period structures considerably. Also, additional damping effect caused by interaction between the viscousity and friction of the MR damper is observed. Finally. response reduction factors for equivalent linear systems are proposed in order to improve accuracy in the prediction of the actual nonlinear response.

  • The purpose of this study is to research dampers, which are applied mainly to buildings adjacent to the coast, such as nuclear facilities, and used for ventilation and can safely protect lives and equipment in emergency situations. Comparing the equivalent stress for three models with hinge reinforcement and support reinforcement based on the early design model for Damper, in the Base model, the highest stress occurred in the part of hinge, especially in the centrally mounted hinge, and after reinforced the hinge, it was occurred in the rear support. For models reinforced hinges and supports, it is considered that reinforcement for stiffness will be required in the future as it entered within the range of allowable stress. For the safety factor distribution, the minimum safety ratio was sufficiently secured at least 1 and was high at the edge of the Damper frame and the Blade. As the hinge was reinforced, the safety factor distribution of Blade was increased, and it was verified that the safety factor was secured through the support reinforcement.

  • The recording density of a hard disk drive(HDD) has been increased so rapidly that the storage capacity of a commercial HDD for the personal computer already reaches several hundred giga-bytes recently. Many technologies related to the HDD, such as servo, media, actuator dynamics, thermo and fluid dynamics, etc. must be developed together to realize higher recording density. Especially, airflow inside the HDD cavity has been concerned as the rotational speed of the disk increases. Typical problem due to the airflow is the off-track vibration of a head stack assembly(HSA) as the airflow collides with the E-block, suspensions, and sliders, i.e., the flow induced vibration(FIV). This problem is one of the most significant sources of the track mis-registration(TMR) so that it must be resolved. In this study, disk damper shape is modified to minimize the influence of airflow on the HSA. Modified disk dampers, which change the flow field of the inside cavity of a HDD, show good effects not only on the disk vibration but also on the off-track vibration of a HSA. Vibrations of E-block and slider have been measured with LDV and the airflow field inside the HDD cavity has been analyzed with commercial CFD program to verify these effects.

  • 최근 교량의 건설에 있어서 내진설계가 주요문제로 부각되면서, 구조물의 진동응답을 제어 하는 갖가지 형태의 진동제어 기법이 적용되고 있다. LRB(Lead Rebbe.

  • In general, control performance of the active control system is superior to that of the passive control devices. However, the active system require a large amount of external energy to operate the actuators. Semi-active control systems maintain the reliability of the passive control systems while taking advantage of the adjustability of the active control system. In this research, a semi-active orificed fluid damper having the capacity of about 2 tons was designed and fabricated. It is a two-stage damper with normally open solenoid valve. A series of tests was performed to grasp its performance characteristics. It was also applied to a 6-story steel structure subjected to random and seismic excitations for the confirmation of its validity on structural vibration absorption.

  • Everyday about 90% of cargos are delivered by ships, and thousands of vessels enter and depart the international container harbors such as Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Busan, Rotterdam, etc. Maneuvering at harbor is known as the most sophisticated and difficult procedure, because the effectiveness of actuators during low speed berthing is reduced. In this paper, a new berthing method is discussed. Tugboats are combined with damper systems to ensure safe berthing. A mathematical model describing the interaction between unactuated ship, tugboats and damper systems is presented. An optimal controller is designed to maneuver the ship without oscillation and overshoot. MCL (Marine Cybernetics Lab) model ship is used to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed approach through MatLab simulation.

  • Considerable achievements in developing structural regulators as an important method for vibration control have been made over the last few decades. The use of large quantities of cables in traditional wired control systems to connect sensors, controllers, and actuators makes the structural regulators complicated and expensive. A wireless decentralized control experimental platform based on Wi-Fi unit is designed and implemented in this study. Centralized and decentralized control strategies as sample controllers are employed in this control system. An optimal control algorithm based on Kalman estimator is embedded in the dSPACE controller and the DSP controller. To examine the performance of this control scheme, a three-story steel structure is developed with active mass dampers installed on each floor as the wireless communication platform. Experimental results show that the wireless decentralized control exhibits good control performance and has various potential applications in industrial control systems. The proposed experimental system may become a benchmark platform for the validation of the corresponding wireless control algorithm.

  • Electrical current is usually used to change the damping force of Magnetorheological Dampers (MRDs). However, changing the electrical current could shift the stiffness of the system, the phenomenon that was not considered carefully. This study aims to evaluate this shift. A typical MRD was designed, optimized, and fabricated to do some accurate and detailed experimental tests to examine the stiffness variation. The damper is equipped with a circulating system to prevent the deposition of particles when it is at rest. Besides that, a vibration setup was developed for the experimental study. It is capable of generating vibration with either constant frequency or frequency sweep and measure the amplitude of vibration. The damper was tested by the vibrating setup, and it was concluded that with a change in electrical current from 0 to 1.4 A, resonant frequency would change from 13.8 Hz to 16 Hz. Considering the unchanging mass of 85.1 kg, the change in resonant frequency translates as a shift in stiffness, which changes from 640 kN/m to 860 kN/m.

  • This paper presents a structural design of the "(Tentative Name) Toranomon Hills Residential Tower" which is currently under construction in Tokyo. The building is a reinforced concrete high-rise residential complex building with 54 stories above ground, 4 basement levels, and a building height of about 220 m. It is a requirement to provide the highest grade of residence in Japan, and in terms of the structural design, it is required to provide wide and comfortable spaces with high seismic performance. These requirements are satisfied by providing a total of 774 vibration control walls of two types. Also, to further improve the structural performance, steel fibers at the rate of 1.0vol% are provided in the ultra-high strength concrete used in the column members.
