The purpose of this project was to evaluate whether daily fruit juice consumption could reduce the DNA damage in healthy subjects. The study was performed using 67 healthy volunteers (29 smokers, 38 nonsmokers) who were supple-mented with 480 m1 of grape juice for 8 weeks. Eight weeks of grape juice consumption did not change any anthropometric parameters. Lymphocyte DNA damage before the study was significantly greater (p<0.05) in smoker than nonsmoker, but, grape juice consumption significantly reduced DNA damage in both smoker (26%) and nonsmoker (I7%) to the level where there was no difference remained between the two groups after the intervention trial. This preventive effect of grape juice against DNA damage was not affected by sex of the subjects in non-smokers. Plasma $\alpha$-carotene, Iyco-pene and ${\gamma}$-totopherol was significantly increased after the trial in smokers, while erythrocyte catalase was significan-tly increased in both smokers and nonsmokers. Total radical-trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP) level in all subjects was significantly reduced after the intervention, while GSH-Px activity was increased only in nonsmokers. These results suggests that daily consumption of grape juice may protect DNA damage in peripheral lymphocytes, and supports the hypothesis that grape juice might exert their effect partially via a decrease in oxidative damage to DNA in humans partly by improving their antioxidative defense system.
Non-stationary random seismic response and reliability of multi-degree of freedom hysteretic structure system are studied based on the cumulative damage failure mechanism. First, dynamic Eqs. of multi-degree of freedom hysteretic structure system under earthquake action are established. Secondly, the random seismic response of a multi-degree freedom hysteretic structure system is investigated by the combination of virtual excitation and precise integration. Finally, according to the damage state level of structural, the different damage state probability of high-rise frame structure is calculated based on the boundary value of the cumulative damage index in the seismic intensity earthquake area. The results show that under the same earthquake intensity and the same floor quality and stiffness, the lower the floor is, the greater the damage probability of the building structure is; if the structural floor stiffness changes abruptly, the weak layer will be formed, and the cumulative damage probability will be the largest, and the reliability index will be relatively small. Meanwhile, with the increase of fortification intensity, the reliability of three-level structure fortification is also significantly reduced. This method can solve the problem of non-stationary random seismic response and reliability of high-rise buildings, and it has high efficiency and practicability. It is instructive for structural performance design and estimating the age of the structure.
This study introduces a novel approach for locating damage in a structure using wireless sensor system with local level computational capability to alleviate data traffic load on the centralized computation. Smart wireless sensor systems, capable of iterative damage-searching, mimic an optimization process in a decentralized way. The proposed algorithm tries to detect damage in a structure by monitoring abnormal increases in strain measurements from a group of wireless sensors. Initially, this clustering technique provides a reasonably effective sensor placement within a structure. Sensor clustering also assigns a certain number of master sensors in each cluster so that they can constantly monitor the structural health of a structure. By adopting a voting system, a group of wireless sensors iteratively forages for a damage location as they can be activated as needed. Since all of the damage searching process occurs within a small group of wireless sensors, no global control or data traffic to a central system is required. Numerical simulation demonstrates that the newly developed searching algorithm implemented on wireless sensors successfully localizes stiffness damage in a plate through the local level reconfigurable function of smart sensors.
Recently, there has been enormous damage due to river floodings caused by localized heavy rains. The direct discharge triggered by those torrential rains inflicts severe property damage on the residents of nearby areas. To minimize the possibility of river floodings in case of heavy rains and to predict the possible damage, the management of existing rainfall and water level observatories should be checked and prediction methods based on the characteristics of water usage and floodgate of nearby rivers must be further analyzed. Therefore, this research analyzed the water level change predictions on different spots with a regression equation of rainfall and water levels, using the observation data of the water level observatory in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province and the rainfall observatory which are located on the upper region of the Han river.

This is a method to determine the boundary line of reservoir flooding area which will be purchased. Until now, flood water level was used as the boundary line. By lowering this line from flood water level, purchasing cost of reservoir flooding area can be cut down. Sometimes, temporary flooding of arable land outside the boundary occurs. During the life of reservoir, flood damage to crop product on of this land must be indemified with net berefit from arable land between the bovndary line and normal water level. Following is the basic formula to determine the line. (Estimated flood damage to crop production of land outside the boundary line $\leqq$ Estimated net beneift from land between the boundary line and normal water level.) Minimum difference between both sides is needed to minimize the purchasing area. Flood damage and net benefit are estimated by hydrologic estimation with rainfall data and crop production estimation.

Under sever earthquake, structural elements or structures may sustain a large number of inelastic excursions. To predict seismic damage of the structures with accuracy, much research for general definition of structural collapse and seismic damage analysis is required. The ductility method, the energy method and Park and Ang method for seismic damage analysis of structural elements and structures are compared in this paper. Also, the seismic damage analysis for system-level of structure is carried out using the ESDOF-system method and Powell method. To compare tendency of the seismic damage analysis using each methods, example analysis is accomplished for several cases of different structures and different earthquake excitation.

Recently, the noise damage cases of livestock are increasing rapidly. The cases related to the livestock damage were occupied 20% of noise and vibration dispute intervention cases from 1991 to 2001. Of this results, 34% (16/38) are relative to pig, 27%(13/30) to domestic fowl and 20%(9/38) to cattle. The results of regression analysis of between the approval of damage rates (ADR) and a noise level by livestock have been derived that pigs was highly sensitive. In case of cattle, the regression model to apply the ADR according to the appraised noise level was made, but it needs to be complemented later.
Rubber-modified epoxy resins have been employed as adhesive and matrix materials for glass and corbon-fiber composites. The behavior of fracture around a crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated through the acoustic emission (AE) analysis of compact tension specimens. Damage zone and rubber particles distributed around a crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The damage zone in front of pre-crack tip in rubber-modified specimen $(15wt\%\; rubber)$ began to form at about $13\%$ level of the fracture load and grew in size until $57\%$ load level. After that, the crack propagated in a stick-slip manner. Based on time-frequency analysis of AE signals and microscopic observation of damage zone, it was thought that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15-0.20 MHz and 0.200.30 MHz were generated from cavitation in the damage zone and crack propagation, respectively.

Fatigue crack behavior is studied through the two-level rotary bending test with the deep non-through radial holed notch specimens of low carbon steels(SM22C). The main factors investigated are the effects of the damage zone size around crack tip and phenomena of closing or opening of the crack tip. Obtained results are summarized as follows. Fatigue crack behavior in second level stressing slightly lower than fatigue limit is closely related to the size of damage zone produced by the first level stress higher than fatigue limit and to the phenomena of crack closing and opening for the second level stress. The non-propagating crack limit condition depends upon the crack length l$_{1}$ propagated under the first level stress and the magnitude of second level stress .sigma.$_{2}$ lower than the fatigue limit. The non-propagating crack limit condition is expressed by following eq. $\sigma_2^{6.1}{\times}l_{1}=7.35{\times}10^{6}[(kg_{f}mm^{6.1}(mm)]$

The present paper investigates the influence of the orientation of the ground-motion reference axes, the seismic incident angle and the seismic intensity level on the inelastic response of asymmetric reinforced concrete buildings. A single storey asymmetric building is analyzed by nonlinear dynamic analyses under twenty bi-directional ground motions. The analyses are performed for many angles of incidence and four seismic intensity levels. Moreover three different pairs of the horizontal accelerograms corresponding to the input seismic motion are considered: a) the recorded accelerograms, b) the corresponding uncorrelated accelerograms, and c) the completely correlated accelerograms. The nonlinear response is evaluated by the overall structural damage index. The results of this study demonstrate that the inelastic seismic response depends on the orientation of the ground-motion reference axes, since the three individual pairs of accelerograms corresponding to the same ground motion (recorded, uncorrelated and completely correlated) can cause different structural damage level for the same incident angle. Furthermore, the use of the recorded accelerograms as seismic input does not always lead to the critical case of study. It is also shown that there is not a particular seismic incident angle or range of angles that leads to the maximum values of damage index regardless of the seismic intensity level or the ground-motion reference axes.
