  • Objectives Yusanghan(類傷寒) means disease which chills and fever manifest like Cold damage(傷寒) but not Cold damage. However, study on Yussanghan is insignificant. The purpose of this study is to examine the origin and development process of Yusanghan. Methods: 1. Terms and disease related with Yusanghan was collected from books covering Cold damage of all time and analyzed. 2. The transition history was researched by analyzing collected terms. 3. Total appearance frequency of all time by collected disease was researched. Results: Yusanghan was appeared in Hwalinseo(活人書), which Ju Geong(朱肱) of the Song Dynasty wrote, for the first time and the definition and type were established. For the types of those, there are four diseases such as Phlegm-Fluid Retention(痰飮), Food Accumulation(食積), Vexation of Deficiency Type(虛煩), Beriberi(脚氣). Since then, the theory about Yusanghan had developed and the number of types had also increased until the Myung Dynasty. Conclusions: In early days, External Contraction Diseases(外感病) was not included in Yusanghan, but since the late Myung Dynasty, there were a lot of doctors who included External Contraction Diseases in Yusanghan, not in Cold damage. There are Summerheat Stroke, Wind-Dampness(風濕), and Warm Disease(溫病) etc. for included External Contraction Diseases. Because of this, the number of types of Yusanhan had significantly increased.

  • Objective I would like to identify when 'If the wind damage people, they feel aversion to wind. If the cold damage people, they feel aversion to cold.(傷風則惡風 傷寒則惡寒)' has appeared and what does this hypothesis have affected. I also researched future scholars' opinions and their criticism on this hypothesis. Methods: 1. Among the books which are related to Cold damage according to the age, books which have original text that has a relationship with this hypothesis were elected. Total of 30 books were elected, and their original text was extracted and analyzed. Results 1. This hypothesis appeared first on Hwalinseo(活人書) in the Song Dynasty, and had lots of impact on future generations. 2. After passing Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasty, there were some opinions appeared which criticized part of this hypothesis. Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) also tried to correct this hypothesis. 3. Bang Yu-Jip(方有執) of Ming Dynasty straightly opposed this hypothesis on Sanghanronjobyeon(傷寒論條辨)for the first time. It had huge influence in the Qing Dynasty and lots of scholars suggested that this hypothesis lacks persuasion. 4. Just like Qing Dynasty, this hypothesis is not accepted in the books of modern ages. Conclusion This hypothesis appeared in the Song Dynasty for the first time and had lots of influence, but some counter arguments had appeared as time passed, and during Qing Dynasty, this hypothesis lost its creditibility with lots of criticism.

  • There is greater significance in identifying the incipient damages in structures at the time of their initiation as timely rectification of these minor incipient cracks can save huge maintenance cost. However, the change in the global dynamic characteristics of a structure due to these subtle damages are insignificant enough to detect using the majority of the current damage diagnostic techniques. Keeping this in view, we propose a hybrid damage diagnostic technique for detection of minor incipient damages in the structures. In the proposed automated hybrid algorithm, the raw dynamic signatures obtained from the structure are decomposed to uni-modal signals and the dynamic signature are reconstructed by identifying and combining only the uni-modal signals altered by the minor incipient damage. We use these reconstructed signals for damage diagnostics using ARMAX model. Numerical simulation studies are carried out to investigate and evaluate the proposed hybrid damage diagnostic algorithm and their capability in identifying minor/incipient damage with noisy measurements. Finally, experimental studies on a beam are also presented to compliment the numerical simulations in order to demonstrate the practical application of the proposed algorithm.

  • A novel approach for integrating active sensing data interrogation algorithms for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications is presented. These algorithms cover Lamb wave propagation, impedance methods, and sensor diagnostics. Contrary to most active-sensing SHM techniques, which utilize only a single signal processing method for damage identification, a suite of signal processing algorithms are employed and grouped into one package to improve the damage detection capability. A MATLAB-based user interface, referred to as HOPS, was created, which allows the analyst to configure the data acquisition system and display the results from each damage identification algorithm for side-by-side comparison. By grouping a suite of algorithms into one package, this study contributes to and enhances the visibility and interpretation of the active-sensing methods related to damage identification. This paper will discuss the detailed descriptions of the damage identification techniques employed in this software and outline future issues to realize the full potential of this software.

  • Purpose : There are two types of sleep disturbance: inability to sleep (不眠) and somnolence (多眠). This study is to examine treatments of the two types of sleep disturbance in the Books of Cold Damage and how those theories were established and formed. Methods : 1. Verses including the words related to inability to sleep and somnolence were extracted from "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases" (傷寒論). 2. Among the Books on Cold Damages that are classified according to the symptoms, 17 books with contents related to inability to sleep and somnolence were selected to collect and classify data in three perspectives: mechanism of disease (病機), method of treatment (治法) and disease pattern (病證). 3. Data collected through the above methods were compared and diagramed. Results & Conclusions : 1. On Cold Damage, inability to sleep is mostly rooted when human body lacks yin energy while having excessive yang energy (陽盛陰虛) due to fire and heat (火熱). The reason could be misuse of perspiration inducing method (汗法) or purgation (下法) on the doctors' part. 2. On Cold Damage, somnolence is rooted when pathogen (邪氣) is spread to yin meridians (陰經) and the human body lacks yang while having excessive yin energy (陰盛陽虛) or when heat (熱邪) is invaded into interior parts (裏部). 3. Many scholars of Cold Damage in later periods had copied the "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases" for treatments of sleep disturbance but many others have applied the verses from "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases" or added new treatments. Do jeol-am (陶節庵) and Wang Geung-dang (王肯堂) particularly had deep understanding on "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases" and utilized the content freely or suggested new remedies because they had thorough knowledge on relating formula as well.

  • Objectives Syndrome differentiation and treatment (辨證論治) is one of the core theories in Korean medicine and syndrome differentiation (辨證) constitutes a branch of disease diagnosis in Korean medicine. Yoon Gil-Young, one of the modern outstanding scholar of basic medical science in Korean medicine, wrote on basic theories of Korean medicine such as physiology, pathology, formula science, etc. Hereby we will analyze and discuss his works to understand his recognition of historical changes in the syndrome differentiation. Methods We conducted researches into the two works of Yoon Gil-Young's, which are "The Clinical Formula Science of Eastern Medicine (東醫臨床方劑學)" and "The theory of Four-Constitution Medicine (四象體質醫學論)". From Yoon's academic standpoint which connects the basic medical science with the clinical medicine, we analyzed his opinion about syndrome differentiation and its historical changes. Results According to Yoon's research work on syndrome differentiation and its historical changes, the development of syndrome differentiation, which goes in harmony with the history of Korean medicine, has its deep root in " Huangdi's Internal Classic (黃帝內經)" and "Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases (傷寒雜病論)". And through "Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach (脾胃論)" and the articles of warm disease (溫病論), the theory of syndrome differentiation became extended to the whole clinical diagnostic field in Korean medicine, finally including the achievements in "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine (東醫寶鑑)", "Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine (東醫壽世保元)". Conclusions Yoon Gil-Young recognized that the system of syndrome differentiation was developed in accordance with the theories from the "Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases", then the "Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach" and the articles of warm disease. The four-constitution medicine in Korea and Koho school in Japan which lays emphasis on abdominal signs also contributed to its development. Syndrome differentiation can be categorized basically into three states of intrinsic cold (本寒), intrinsic deficiency (本虛), intrinsic heat (本熱) according to the deficiency and excess in human body metabolism.

  • It is critically important to identify unexpected loose parts in a nuclear reactor pressure vessel, since they may collide with and cause damage to internal structures. Mass estimation can provide key information regarding the kind as well as the location of loose parts. This study proposes a mass estimation method based on an artificial neural network (ANN), which can overcome several unresolved issues involved in other conventional methods. In the ANN model, input parameters are the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients of the auto-power spectrum density (APSD) of the measured impact acceleration signal. The performance of the proposed method is then evaluated through application to a large-sized plate and a 1/8-scaled mockup of a reactor pressure vessel. The results are compared with those obtained using a conventional method, the frequency ratio (FR) method. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of estimating the impact mass with 30% lower relative error than the FR method, thus improving the estimation performance.

  • This paper presents recent developments in an extremely compact, wireless impedance sensor node (the WID3, $\underline{W}$ireless $\underline{I}$mpedance $\underline{D}$evice) for use in high-frequency impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM), sensor diagnostics and validation, and low-frequency (< ~1 kHz) vibration data acquisition. The WID3 is equipped with an impedance chip that can resolve measurements up to 100 kHz, a frequency range ideal for many SHM applications. An integrated set of multiplexers allows the end user to monitor seven piezoelectric sensors from a single sensor node. The WID3 combines on-board processing using a microcontroller, data storage using flash memory, wireless communications capabilities, and a series of internal and external triggering options into a single package to realize a truly comprehensive, self-contained wireless active-sensor node for SHM applications. Furthermore, we recently extended the capability of this device by implementing low-frequency analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters so that the same device can measure structural vibration data. The compact sensor node collects relatively low-frequency acceleration measurements to estimate natural frequencies and operational deflection shapes, as well as relatively high-frequency impedance measurements to detect structural damage. Experimental results with application to SHM, sensor diagnostics and low-frequency vibration data acquisition are presented.
