  • In this paper, a new damage-detection method based on structural vibration is proposed. The essence of the proposed method is the detection of abrupt changes in rotation. Damage-induced rotation (DIR), which is determined from the modal flexibility of the structure, initially occurs only at a specific damaged location. Therefore, damage can be localized by evaluating abrupt changes in rotation. We conducted numerical simulations of two damage scenarios using a 10-story cantilever-type building model. Measurement noise was also considered in the simulation. We compared the sensitivity of the proposed method to localize damage to that of two conventional modal-flexibility-based damage-detection methods, i.e., uniform load surface (ULS) and ULS curvature. The proposed method was able to localize damage in both damage scenarios for cantilever structures, but the conventional methods could not.

  • In this study, an ANN-based damage detection algorithm using acceleration signals is developed for alarming locations of damage in beam-type structures. A new ANN-algorithm using output-only acceleration responses is designed for damage detection in real time. The cross-covariance of two acceleration signals measured at two different locations is selected as the feature representing the structural condition. Neural networks are trained for potential loading patterns and damage scenarios of the target structure for which its actual loadings are unknown. The feasibility and practicality of the proposed method are evaluated from laboratory-model tests on free-free beams for which accelerations were measured before and after several damage cases.

  • This paper is devoted to proposing a new approach for damage detection of structures. In this technique, the biconjugate gradient method (BCG) is employed. To remedy the noise effects, a new preconditioning algorithm is applied. The proposed preconditioner matrix significantly reduces the condition number of the system. Moreover, based on the characteristics of the damage vector, a new direct search algorithm is employed to increase the efficiency of the suggested damage detection scheme by reducing the number of unknowns. To corroborate the high efficiency and capability of the presented strategy, it is applied for estimating the severity and location of damage in the well-known 31-member and 52-member trusses. For damage detection of these trusses, the time history responses are measured by a limited number of sensors. The results of numerical examples reveal high accuracy and robustness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the processing of nonlinear features associated with a damage event by quadratic time-frequency distributions for damage identification in a frame structure. A time-frequency distribution is a function which distributes the total energy of a signal at a particular time and frequency point. As the occurrence of damage often gives rise to non-stationary, nonlinear structural behavior, simultaneous representation of the dynamic response in the time-frequency plane offers valuable insight for damage detection. The applicability of the bilinear time-frequency distributions of the Cohen class is examined for the damage assessment of a frame structure from the simulated acceleration data. It is shown that the changes in instantaneous energy of the dynamic response could be a good damage indicator. Presence and location of damage can be identified using Choi-Williams distribution when damping is ignored. However, in the presence of damping the Page distribution is more effective and offers better readability for structural damage detection.

  • In this paper, structural damage in PSC bridges is monitored by using model-based damage detection methods. First numerical experiments on the test structure are described. Dynamic responses of the test structures are obtained fur several damage scenarios. The change in natural frequency and the change in nude shape curvature are selected as features to represent the states of the structure. Next a damage localization algorithm from monitoring the changes in natural frequency is outlined. Also, the damage localization algorithm from monitoring the changes in nude shapes is outlined. Finally, the damage localization algorithms are used to predict damage in the test structure. The results of the analysis indicate that the model-based damage detection methods correctly predicted damage in the test structure.

  • Damage detection based on dynamic characteristics of a structure is one of important roles in structural damage identification. It is difficult to detect local structural damage using traditional dynamic experimental methods due to a limited number of sensors used in an experiment. In this work, a non-contact test stand of fan blades is established, and a full-field noncontact test method, combined with three-dimensional digital image correlation, Bayesian operational modal analysis, and damage indices, is used to detect local damage of a fan blade under ambient excitation without use of baseline information before structural damage. The methodology is applied to detect invisible local damage on the fan blade. Such a method has a seemingly high potential as an alternative to detect local damage of blades with complex high-precision surfaces under extreme working conditions because it is a noncontact test method and can be used under ambient excitation without human participation.

  • Damage detection methodologies based on the direct examination of the nonlinear-nonstationary characteristics of the structure dynamic response may play an important role in online structural health monitoring applications. Different signal processing based damage detection methodologies have been proposed based on the uncovering of spikes in the high frequency component of the structural response obtained via Discrete Wavelet transforms, Hilbert-Huang transforms or high pass filtering. The performance of these approaches in systems subjected to different types of excitation is evaluated in this paper. It is found that in the case of random excitations, like earthquake accelerations, the effectiveness of such methodologies is limited. An alternative damage detection approach using the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is also evaluated to overcome this limitation. Using the CWT has the advantage that the central frequencies at which it operates can be defined by the user while the frequency bands of the detail functions obtained via DWT are predetermined by the sampling period of the signal.

  • The effect of structural uncertainties or measurement errors on damage detection results makes the robustness become one of the most important features during identification. Due to the wide use of vibration signatures on damage detection, the development of vibration-based techniques has attracted a great interest. In this work, a review on vibration-based robust detection techniques is presented, in which the robustness is considerably improved through modeling error compensation, environmental variation reduction, denoising, or proper sensing system design. It is hoped that this study can give help on structural health monitoring or damage mitigation control.

  • The smart sensor technology has opened new horizons for assessing and monitoring structural health of civil infrastructure. Smart sensor's unique features such as onboard computation, wireless communication, and cost effectiveness can enable a dense network of sensors that is essential for accurate assessment of structural health in large-scale civil structures. While most research efforts to date have been focused on realizing wireless smart sensor networks (WSSN) on bridge structures, relatively less attention is paid to applying this technology to buildings. This paper presents a decentralized damage detection using the WSSN for building structures. An existing flexibility-based damage detection method is extended to be used in the decentralized computing environment offered by the WSSN and implemented on MEMSIC's Imote2 smart sensor platform. Numerical simulation and laboratory experiment are conducted to validate the WSSN for decentralized damage detection of building structures.
