Windborne debris is a major cause of structural damage during severe windstorms and hurricanes owing to its direct impact on building envelopes as well as to the 'chain reaction' failure mechanism it induces by interacting with wind pressure damage. Estimation of debris risk is an important component in evaluating wind damage risk to residential developments. A debris risk model developed by the authors enables one to analytically aggregate damage threats to a building from different types of debris originating from neighboring buildings. This model is extended herein to a general debris risk analysis methodology that is then incorporated into a vulnerability model accounting for the temporal evolution of the interaction between pressure damage and debris damage during storm passage. The current paper (Part I) introduces the debris risk analysis methodology, establishing the mathematical modeling framework. Stochastic models are proposed to estimate the probability distributions of debris trajectory parameters used in the method. It is shown that model statistics can be estimated from available information from wind-tunnel experiments and post-damage surveys. The incorporation of the methodology into vulnerability modeling is described in Part II.
To solve the problem of detecting structural damage, a two-stage method using the Kalman filter and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proposed. In this method, the first PSO population is enhanced using the Kalman filter method based on dynamic responses. Due to noise in the sensor responses and errors in the damage detection process, the accuracy of the damage detection process is reduced. This method proposes a novel approach for solve this problem by integrating the Kalman filter and sensitivity analysis. In the Kalman filter, an approximate damage equation is considered as the equation of state and the damage detection equation based on sensitivity analysis is considered as the observation equation. The first population of PSO are the random damage scenarios. These damage scenarios are estimated using a step of the Kalman filter. The results of this stage are then used to detect the exact location of the damage and its severity with the PSO algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed method is investigated using three numerical examples: a 31-element planer truss, a 52-element space dome, and a 56-element space truss. In these examples, damage is detected for several scenarios in two states: using the no noise responses and using the noisy responses. The results show that the precision and efficiency of the proposed method are appropriate in structural damage detection.
Significant costs to the public and private sectors due to recent extreme wind events have motivated the need for systematic post-hurricane damage data collection and analysis. Current post disaster data are collected by many different interested groups such as government agencies, voluntary disaster relief agencies, representatives of media companies, academicians and companies in the private sector. Each group has an interest in a particular type of data. However, members of each group collect data using different techniques. This disparity in data is not conducive to quantifying damage data and, therefore, inhibits the statistical and spatial description of damage and comparisons of damage among different extreme wind events. The data collection does not allow comparisons of data or results of analyses within a group and also prohibits comparison of damage data and information among different groups. Typically, analyses of data from a given event lead to different conclusion depending upon the definition of damage used by individual investigators and the type of data collected making it difficult for members of groups to compare the results of their analyses with a common language and basis. A formal method of data collection and analysis-within any single group-would allow comparisons to be made among different individuals, hazardous events and eventually among different groups, thus facilitating the management and reduction of damage due to future disaster. This research introduces a definition of damage to single family dwellings, and a common method of data collection and analysis suited for groups interested in regional characterization of damage. The current state-of-data is presented and a method for data collection is recommended based on these existing data collection methods. A fixed-scale damage index is proposed to consider the damage to a dwelling's feature. Finally, the damage index is applied to three dwellings damaged by Hurricane Iniki (1992). The damage index reflects the reduced functionality of a structure as a single family detached dwelling and provides a means to evaluate regional damage due to a single event or to compare damage due to events of different severity. Evaluation of the damage index and the data available support recommendation for future data collection efforts.
This study surveyed damage to small and medium-sized RC slab bridges, the largest in number in Korea. Four common types of damage were identified, and their static and dynamic structural behaviors were examined through structural analysis. The degree of damage was selected as an analysis parameter for three superstructures of RC slab bridges. After structural analysis, a damage assessment process was proposed that can be used as the basis for establishing maintenance yplans for these bridges. The results of the present study can be used for the safety management of RC slab bridges, classified as bridges suspected of safety flaws or requiring maintenance in load-carrying capacity tests.

The objective of this study is to develop a damage model based on damage mechanics that can be used to analyze the mechanical behavior of structures with defects and the global behavior of damaged structures. A modified second order damage tensor that can be applied to finite element analysis is used to reflect the effect of damage. The damage stress computed from the effective stress is considered as an additional loading term acting on nodes and can represent the effect of crack surface. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the analysis results with the experimental data from other studies and the analysis results based on transverse isotropic theory. The developed damage model is applied to the analyses of structures with cracks under linear elastic condition. Numerical results show that the developed model can effectively analyze the global behavior of damaged structures.
An integrated method is proposed for structural nonlinear damage detection based on time series analysis and the higher statistical moments of structural responses in this study. It combines the time series analysis, the higher statistical moments of AR model residual errors and the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering techniques. A few comprehensive damage indexes are developed in the arithmetic and geometric mean of the higher statistical moments, and are classified by using the FCM clustering method to achieve nonlinear damage detection. A series of the measured response data, downloaded from the web site of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) USA, from a three-storey building structure considering the environmental variety as well as different nonlinear damage cases, are analyzed and used to assess the performance of the new nonlinear damage detection method. The effectiveness and robustness of the new proposed method are finally analyzed and concluded.
Damage estimation of bridge structures has recently received considerable attention in the light of maintenance and retrofitting of existing structures under service loads and after natural disasters. A method for the damage assessment of bridge structures using a damage index technique is presented. The damage index is formulated for the changes of modal properties due to the change of the stiffness. In order to verify the method which is presented, numerical analysis is conducted on simple beam models. Each FE model is subjected to different damage scenarios, i.e., locations and degrees of damage. Results of numerical analysis indicate that the proposed method is capable of detecting inflicted damages using the eigenvalue of only first mode.

Currently, according to the climate change, serious damage by Typhoon has been occurred in the world. In this respect, the research on the damage prediction model to minimize the damage from various natural disaster has been conducted in several developed countries. In the case of U.S, various damage prediction models of buildings from natural disasters have been used widely in many organizations such as insurance companies and governments. In South Korea, although studies regarding damage prediction model of hurricane have been conducted, the scope has been only limited to consider the property of hurricane. However, it is necessary to consider various factors such as socio-economic, physical, geographical, and built environmental factors to predict the damages. Therefore, to address this issue, correlation analysis is conducted between various variables based on the data of hurricane from 2003 to 2012. The findings of this study can be utilized to develop for predicting the damage of hurricane on buildings.
One of the most widely used methods to estimate core damage during a nuclear power plant accident is containment radiation measurement. The evolution of severe accidents is extremely complex, leading to uncertainty in the containment dose rate (CDR). Therefore, it is difficult to accurately determine core damage. This study proposes to conduct uncertainty analysis of CDR for core damage assessment. First, based on source term estimation, the Monte Carlo (MC) and point-kernel integration methods were used to estimate the probability density function of the CDR under different extents of core damage in accident scenarios with late containment failure. Second, the results were verified by comparing the results of both methods. The point-kernel integration method results were more dispersed than the MC results, and the MC method was used for both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Quantitative analysis indicated a linear relationship, rather than the expected proportional relationship, between the CDR and core damage fraction. The CDR distribution obeyed a logarithmic normal distribution in accidents with a small break in containment, but not in accidents with a large break in containment. A possible application of our analysis is a real-time core damage estimation program based on the CDR.
A number of acceleration-based damage detection methods have been developed but they have not been widely applied in engineering practices because the acceleration response is insensitive to minor damage of civil structures. In this article, a damage detection approach using the long-gauge strain sensing technology and the principle component analysis technology is proposed. The Long gauge FBG sensor has its special merit for damage detection by measuring the averaged strain over a long-gauge length, and it can be connected each other to make a distributed sensor network for monitoring the large-scale civil infrastructure. A new damage index is defined by performing the principle component analyses of the long-gauge strains measured from the intact and damaged structures respectively. Advantages of the long gauge sensing and the principle component analysis technologies guarantee the effectiveness for structural damage localization. Examples of a simple supported beam and a steel stringer bridge have been investigated to illustrate the successful applications of the proposed method for structural damage detection.
