  • Due to structural complicacy, structural health monitoring for civil engineering needs more accurate and effectual methods of damage identification. This study aims to import multi-source information fusion (MSIF) into structural damage diagnosis to improve the validity of damage detection. Firstly, the essential theory and applied mathematic methods of MSIF are introduced. And then, the structural damage identification method based on multi-mode information fusion is put forward. Later, on the basis of a numerical simulation of a concrete continuous box beam bridge, it is obviously indicated that the improved modal strain energy method based on multi-mode information fusion has nicer sensitivity to structural initial damage and favorable robusticity to noise. Compared with the classical modal strain energy method, this damage identification method needs much less modal information to detect structural initial damage. When the noise intensity is less than or equal to 10%, this method can identify structural initial damage well and truly. In a word, this structural damage identification method based on multi-mode information fusion has better effects of structural damage identification and good practicability to actual structures.

  • This paper introduces a structural damage identification method to identify 4he multiple directional damages generated within a cylindrical shell by using the measured frequency response function (FRF). The equations of motion for a damaged cylindrical shell are derived. by using a theory of continuum damage mechanics in which a small material volume containing a directional damage is represented by the effective orthotropic elastic stiffness. In contrast with most existing vibration-based structural damage identification methods which require the modal Parameters measured in both intact and damaged states, the present method requires only the FRF-data measured at damaged state. Numerically simulated damage identification tests are conducted to verify the feasibility of the Proposed structural damage identification method.

  • This paper proposes a structural damage identification approach based on the power spectral density transmissibility (PSDT), which is developed to formulate the relationship between two sets of auto-spectral density functions of output responses. The accuracy of response reconstruction with PSDT is investigated and the damage identification in structures is conducted with measured acceleration responses from the damaged state. Numerical studies on a seven-storey plane frame structure are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed damage identification approach. The initial finite element model of the structure and measured acceleration measurements from the damaged structure are used for the identification with a dynamic response sensitivity-based model updating method. The simulated damages can be identified accurately without and with a 5% noise effect included in the simulated responses. Experimental studies on a steel plane frame structure in the laboratory are performed to further verify the accuracy of response reconstruction with PSDT and validate the proposed damage identification approach. The locations of the introduced damage are detected accurately and the stiffness reductions in the damaged elements are identified close to the true values. The identification results demonstrated the accuracy of response reconstruction as well as the correctness and efficiency of the proposed damage identification approach.

  • This paper introduces a frequency-domain method of structural damage identification. It is formulated in a general form from the dynamic stiffness equation of motion for a structure and then applied to a beam structure. The appealing features of the present damage identification method are: (1) it requires only the frequency response functions experimentally measured from damaged structure as the input data, and (2) it can locate and quantify many local damages at the same time. The feasibility of the present damage identification method is tested through some numerically simulated damage identification analyses and then experimental verification is conducted for a cantilevered beam with damage caused by introducing three slots.

  • A new damage identification technique using static displacement data is developed to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. In the conventional damage assessment techniques using dynamic response, it is usually difficult to obtain a significant natural frequencies variation from the measured data because the natural frequencies variation is intrinsically not sensitive to the damage of a bridge. In this proposed identification method, the stiffness reduction of the bridges can be estimated using the static displacement data measured periodically and a specific loading test is not required. The static displacement data due to the dead load of the bridge structure can be measured by devices such as a laser displacement sensor. In this study, structural damage is represented by the reduction in the elastic modulus of the element. The damage factor of the element is introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Finally, the proposed algorithm is verified using various numerical simulation and compared with other damage identification method. Also, the effect of noise and number of damaged elements on the identification are investigated. The results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient for damage identification of the bridges.

  • Wear and aging associated damage is a severe problem for safety and maintenance of engineering structures. To acquire structural operational state and provide warning about different types of damage, research on damage identification has gained increasing popularity in recent years. Among various damage identification methods, the Lamb wave-based methods have shown promising suitability and potential for damage identification of plate-type structures. In this paper, a comprehensive study was presented to elaborate four remarkable aspects regarding the Lamb wave-based damage identification method for plate-type structures, including wave velocity, signal denoising, image reconstruction, and sensor layout. Conclusions and path forward were summarized and classified serving as a starting point for research and application in this area.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear structural damage identification algorithm is derived by taking into account the structurally damped spectral element model thinking over a real situation. The structural damage identification analyses are conducted by using the Newton-Raphson method. It is found that, in general Structural Damage Identification by using the Structurally Damped Spectral Element Model provides the same exact damage identification results when compared with the results obtained by the structurally undamped spectral model.

  • A spectral element model-based structural damage identification method (SDIM) was derived in the previous study by using the damage-induced changes in frequency response functions. However the previous SDIM often provides poor damage identification results because the nonlinear effect of damage magnitude was not taken into account. Thus, this paper improves the previous SDIM by taking into account the nonlinear effect of damage magnitude. Accordingly an iterative solution method is used in this study to solve the nonlinear matrix equation for local damages distribution. The present SDIM is evaluated through the numerically simulated damage identification tests.

  • A practical damage identification scheme for PS concrete bridges via modal testing and system identification (SID) procedures is presented. The potential damage types are classified and the possible approaches which can be implemented into each damage type are designed. Damage identification algorithms are developed on the basis of the SID and modal analysis. The feasibility of the algorithms is verified from experimental tests to detect damage in PS concrete beam structures.

  • In this study, an FRF-based structural damage identification method (SDIM) is proposed for plate structures. The present SDIM is derived from the partial differential equation of motion of the damaged plate, in which damage is characterized by damage distribution function. Various factors that might affect the accuracy of the damage identification are investigated. They include the number of modal data used in the analysis and the damage-induced modal coupling. In the present SDIM, an efficient iterative damage self-search method is introduced. The iterative damage search method efficiently reduces the size of problem by searching out and then by removing all damage-free zones at each iteration of damage identification analysis. The feasibility of the present SDIM is studied by some numerically simulated tests.
