  • In this study, we researched the characteristics of $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ emission of the wastewater treatment (WWT) process in the dairy industry. For flux measurements at the air-water interface, a floating dynamic flow-through chamber was used above the water surface. $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ concentration from the WWT process was measured by NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) Analyser. In the study, $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ fluxes results showed a distinct difference for each WWT process. 60% of the GHG emissions which was the highest percentage were from the equalization tank. Reactor tank was second with 27% of the total emissions from the WWT. Aeration tank was third with 12% of the total emissions. The tendency was that the more the wastewater was treated, the less GHGs were emitted. $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ showed the same tendency. This indicates that the concentrations and properties of wastewater could affect the tendency.

  • One of the most pressing issues facing the dairy industry is drought. In areas where annual precipitation is low, irrigation for growing feed presents the greatest water-utilization challenge for dairy producers. Here, we investigated the effects of cultivar and harvest days after planting (DAP) on dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value of teff (Eragrostis tef), a warm-season annual grass native to Ethiopia that is well adapted to drought conditions. Eighty pots were blocked by location in a greenhouse and randomly assigned to four teff cultivars (Tiffany, Moxie, Corvallis, and Dessie) and to five harvest times (40, 45, 50, 55, or 60 DAP). Cultivars had no effect on DM yield and nutritive value. As harvest time increased from 40 to 60 DAP, DM yield and ash-free neutral detergent fiber (aNDFom) concentrations increased, while crude protein (CP) concentrations and in vitro NDF digestibility decreased. To assess carryover effects of time of harvest on yield and nutritive value, two additional cuttings were taken from each pot. Increasing first-cutting harvest time decreased CP concentrations in the second cutting and reduced DM yields in the second and third cutting. Harvesting teff between 45 and 50 DAP best optimized forage yield and nutritive value in the first and subsequent cuttings.

  • According to various negative effects of antibiotic growth promoters, the effects of nature-derived alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters are mainly investigated in livestock industry these days. The effects of nature-derived alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters are mainly investigated in livestock industry these days. This study was conducted to estimate the efficiency of natural-derived alternatives to antimicrobial and antioxidant such as oregano oil (OGO), sulfide type antimicrobial peptides derived from Bacillus or Yeast (SAPBY), antimicrobial peptides derived from yeast (APY). The lactic acid bacteria growth effects were found to be minimal. The antibacterial activity of SAPBY was minimal, but OGO and APY showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium, and APY also showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus. Antioxidant effects were observed in all SAPBY, OGO, and APY, and when comparing the radical scavenging rate at 10 mg·mL-1 for each sample, OGO showed the highest at 84.9%, followed by SAPBY at 48.7%. Therefore, the substances that can be used as natural antibiotics are SAPBY, APY, and OGO. It is believed that adding these substances to feed and feeding them to livestock will greatly contribute to improving the health of livestock and the productivity of safe livestock products. In further, research focused on various nature-derived alternatives to antibiotic growth promoter in livestock industry is needed.

  • This review provides an overview of the published data on the canola meal and its suitability for duck as an alternative plant-origin protein source to soybean meal. Canola meal is a legume origin protein source containing comparable amino acid profile to soybean meal and rich in essential minerals and vitamins. Nonetheless, it is known to contain less in energy content than soybean meal. Factors like field conditions and processing methods creates compositional variations among canola meal. Presence of anti-nutritional factors such as phenolic substances, phytate and glucosinolates which are known to reduce growth performance in livestock animals, are the major drawbacks for canola meal to be a competitive plant-origin protein source in the feed industry. This review is focused to address i) nutritional characteristics and feeding value of canola meal for ducks and ii) impacts of feeding canola meal on performances of ducks.

  • Fatty liver is a common metabolic disorder of dairy cows during the transition period. Historically, the diagnosis of fatty liver has involved liver biopsy, biochemical or histological examination of liver specimens, and ultrasonographic imaging of the liver. However, more convenient and noninvasive methods would be beneficial for the diagnosis of fatty liver in dairy cows. The plasma metabolic profiles of dairy cows with fatty liver and normal (control) cows were investigated to identify new biomarkers using $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance. Compared with the control group, the primary differences in the fatty liver group included increases in ${\beta}$-hydroxybutyric acid, acetone, glycine, valine, trimethylamine-N-oxide, citrulline, and isobutyrate, and decreases in alanine, asparagine, glucose, ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid glycerol, and creatinine. This analysis revealed a global profile of endogenous metabolites, which may present potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of fatty liver in dairy cows.

  • Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 is well-characterized as an important food-borne pathogen worldwide and causes human diseases such as diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) by producing shiga-like toxin (Stx). It has been reported that a number of dairy foods, including cheese, can act as the source of EHEC O157:H7 infections. In addition to the toxicity of Stx, recently it has been indicated that EHEC O157:H7 possesses virulence factors related to attachment, quorum sensing, and biofilms. Moreover, these novel virulence factors might become critical points to be considered in the future production of food derived from animals. Here, we review the evidences that support these insights on new virulence factors and discuss the potential mechanisms mediating the pathogenesis of EHEC O157:H7 in the dairy food industry.

  • Background: Bovine papillomatosis is a type of proliferative tumor disease of skin and mucosae caused by bovine papillomavirus (BPV). As a transboundary and emerging disease in cattle, it poses a potential threat to the dairy industry. Objectives: The aim of this study is to detect and clarify the genetic diversity of BPV circulating in dairy cows in Xinjiang, China. Methods: 122 papilloma skin lesions from 8 intensive dairy farms located in different regions of Xinjiang, China were detected by polymerase chain reaction. The genetic evolution relationships of various types of BPVs were analyzed by examining this phylogenetic tree. Results: Ten genotypes of BPV (BPV1, BPV2, BPV3, BPV6, BPV7, BPV8, BPV10, BPV11, BPV13, and BPV14) were detected and identified in dairy cows. These were the first reported detections of BPV13 and BPV14 in Xinjiang, Mixed infections were detected, and there were geographical differences in the distribution of the BPV genotypes. Notably, the BPV infection rate among young cattle (< 1-year-old) developed from the same supply of frozen sperm was higher than that of the other young cows naturally raised under the same environmental conditions. Conclusions: Genotyping based on the L1 gene of BPV showed that BPVs circulating in Xinjiang China displayed substantial genetic diversity. This study provided valuable data at the molecular epidemiology level, which is conducive to developing deep insights into the genetic diversity and pathogenic characteristics of BPVs in dairy cows.
